Trump Denounces NYT Cyber Warfare Story As “A Virtual Act Of Treason”

I have previously criticized President Donald Trump for his relentless attacks on the media and his mantra of labeling such publications as the Washington Post and New York Times as “the enemy of the people.” He has also routinely called a couple dozen people and organizations “traitors,” as recently listed by Axios. This weekend Trump continued the attacks on the New York Times for a story that revealed attacks on Russia’s electric power grid. Trump declared that the publication of the article was a “virtual act of treason” — an act on a classic example of investigatory reporting. Trump’s continued attacks on the free press are not just highly embarrassing but highly disturbing from a President of the United States. With free speech, the free press is the very touchstone of liberty in our nation.

Ironically, the story contradicted the common Democratic narrative that Trump is soft or even controlled by Russia. Here was a case where U.S. intelligence was allegedly shooting across the bow of Russia to show that it better stop probing our own electrical grid in a deterrent action. Trump however immediately wiped out that view by angrily denying the story as “fake news” and “treason.”

“Do you believe that the Failing New York Times just did a story stating that the United States is substantially increasing Cyber Attacks on Russia, This is a virtual act of Treason by a once great paper so desperate for a story, any story, even if bad for our Country. . . .ALSO, NOT TRUE! Anything goes with our Corrupt News Media today They will do, or say, whatever it takes, with not even the slightest thought of consequence! These are true cowards and without doubt, THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!”

As Trump was denying the story, other coverage said that U.S. intelligence officials are hesitant to share the details of their operations from Trump. According to David E. Sanger and Nicole Periroth:

Two administration officials said they believed Mr. Trump had not been briefed in any detail about the steps to place “implants”—software code that can be used for surveillance or attack—inside the Russian grid.

Pentagon and intelligence officials described broad hesitation to go into detail with Mr. Trump about operations against Russia for concern over his reaction—and the possibility that he might countermand it or discuss it with foreign officials, as he did in 2017 when he mentioned a sensitive operation in Syria to the Russian foreign minister.

Obviously, there is no need to defend the New York Times for such a piece of investigatory reporting. Nor is there a need to defend our commitment to the free press as on of the virtual pillars of democratic government and freedom. It is simply disheartening to hear an American President voice such attacks previously reserved to the world’s most authoritarian figures.

The New York Times spoke for many concerned citizens and journalists on Sunday that “Accusing the press of treason is dangerous.” It added that it followed a cautious and responsible course in vetting the story with the Trump Administration: “As our story notes, President Trump’s own national security officials said there were no concerns.”

  1. What is most disturbing here is the claim that the IC is essentially operating on their own.

Regardless of all the other twists to this, our constitution vests the executive power of the united states in the president. There is no power given the CIA or FBI in the constitution.

Just as the military is subordinate to the civilian leadership of the president – so is the rest of the govenrment.

It is far less dangerous to have a president who makes poor choices, than to have an unelevted shadow govenment that gets to decide on its own in secret without any oversight what is good for the rest of us.

Even if they might be right 9 times out of 10. The tenth is an unfixable form of tryany.

A few days ago, Trump pulled the plug on retaliation against Iran.

    The military listened.

I am sure many of them disagreed. But they listened.

Many of us might disagree. But the constitution gives the final decision to the president, and if we do not like his choices we get to vote him out of office or impeach him.

What we do not want is random maybe even well meaning people in government disregarding our elections, and our elected president and running the country as they see fit.

  2. One can only guess as to why the President wanted this covert cyber-op to remain secret. I’m guessing that the President knows that cyberwarfare remain a huge vulnerability for the US. The US Cyber Command has spent tens of billions, and hasn’t achieved anything remotely approaching security in cyber….you could argue that the threat has only increased the past 10 years. I think the President should worry about the blowback if the US suffers a major cyber attack on his watch.

As for the NYT, their position would be more defensible if they had an official source, or in the case of an unauthorized leak, they talked to DoD about the consequences of going public.

  3. We should all support an absolutely free press.

But that is not to say the president must stand and take it. When the free press refuses to abide by its own ethical standards, those under attack can and should fight back. The free press is subservient to the truth, and even Mr. Turley must acknowledge the reporting by the free media has becom not only slovenly, but downright untrue with greater and greater frequency.

Trump, should hit back hard and call the media to account for its actions.

  4. OT: The Biden family isn’t so nice. Joe’s touchy feely way of dealing with other people has gone to a new level with his son. In addition to Hunter getting a billion dollar deal at the same time his father was dealing for the US we learn the following.

“Her complaint alleges that Hunter hasn’t sufficiently provided for the family after the couple formally separated in October of 2015. In late 2016, Hunter ordered his office to cut Kathleen’s $17,000-a-month payment to $7,500, according to the complaint. Property records show that the couple owns a six-bedroom home in D.C. that was purchased for nearly $1.6 million in 2006.

Over the course of the separation, Hunter has drained hundreds of thousands of dollars from the couple’s marital assets by “spending extravagantly on his own interests (including drugs, alcohol, prostitutes, strip clubs and gifts for women with whom he has sexual relations), while leaving the family with no funds to pay legitimate bills,” according to a Feb. 23 motion filed by Kathleen. The motion asks the court to stop Hunter from further “dissipation” of the assets.

In 2014, the Navy Reserve discharged Hunter after he tested positive for cocaine. He had served for less than a year as a public affairs officer.”

  5. The problem is that the NYT has no ability to distinguish how to protect the US because they want to ruin and destroy the President. It’s a sad state that the NYT must constantly try to harm the President and in its efforts continues to work to destroy the US.

  6. The NYT: says: All the news that’s fit to print.
    Well. They can be wrong.
Trump can be wrong about his criticism. So what?

  7. NYwho? WaPuh who?

Sorry Jonathan, but Americans are supersaturated with your hand wringing and crying wolf for every time Trump coughs or sneezes. Your web traffic has fallen and the number of comments has been populated for the past month with the same authors over and over again. Might you try a more scholarly, academic tact?

Trump to announce re-election bid at Amway Center

ORLANDO, Fla. – More than 40 hours before President Donald Trump will announce his re-election bid in Orlando, supporters started lining up outside the Amway Center.

Eight Trump supporters started camping out Monday morning, with the first one showing up at 2:30 a.m. The rally is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Gary Beck, a Trump supporter from Panama City, was the first in line.

“There’s going to be a bunch of people, and it’s going to be pretty intense,” Beck said. “The electricity is going to be high. It’s time for America to get back on its feet and be made better than it’s ever been before.”

Trump tweeted Monday that the rally “looks to be setting records,” with more than 100,000 ticket requests. The Amway Center seats 20,000.

“We are building large movie screens outside to take care of everybody,” Trump tweeted.

The visit marks Trump’s first campaign event in Orlando since he ended his 2016 presidential campaign with a “Thank You Tour” stop at the Central Florida Fairgrounds.

  9. The Coming Show Trial of Julian Assange

    by Chris Hedges

    https://www.truthdig.com/articles/the-coming-show-trial-of-julian-assange/

    Excerpt:

On Friday morning I was in a small courtroom at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London. Julian Assange, held in Belmarsh Prison and dressed in a pale-blue prison shirt, appeared on a video screen directly in front of me. Assange, his gray hair and beard neatly trimmed, slipped on heavy, dark-frame glasses at the start of the proceedings. He listened intently as Ben Brandon, the prosecutor, seated at a narrow wooden table, listed the crimes he allegedly had committed and called for his extradition to the United States to face charges that could result in a sentence of 175 years. The charges include the release of unredacted classified material that posed a “grave” threat to “human intelligence sources” and “the largest compromises of confidential information in the history of the United States.” After the prosecutor’s presentation, Assange’s attorney, Mark Summers, seated at the same table, called the charges “an outrageous and full-frontal assault on journalistic rights.”

Most of us who have followed the long persecution of Assange expected this moment, but it was nevertheless deeply unsettling, the opening of the final act in a Greek tragedy where the hero, cursed by fortuna, or fate, confronts the dark forces from which there is no escape.

The publication of classified documents is not a crime in the United States, but if Assange is extradited and convicted it will become one. Assange is not an American citizen. WikiLeaks, which he founded and publishes, is not a U.S.-based publication. The message the U.S. government is sending is clear: No matter who or where you are, if you expose the inner workings of empire you will be hunted down, kidnapped and brought to the United States to be tried as a spy. The extradition and trial of Assange will mean the end of public investigations by the press into the crimes of the ruling elites. It will cement into place a frightening corporate tyranny. Publications such as The New York Times and The Guardian, which devoted pages to the WikiLeaks revelations and later amplified and legitimized Washington’s carefully orchestrated character assassination of Assange, are no less panicked. This is the gravest assault on press freedom in my lifetime.

    End of excerpt

    1. I’m afraid i take the same message that Hedges does from this

“The publication of classified documents is not a crime in the United States, but if Assange is extradited and convicted it will become one. Assange is not an American citizen. WikiLeaks, which he founded and publishes, is not a U.S.-based publication. The message the U.S. government is sending is clear: No matter who or where you are, if you expose the inner workings of empire you will be hunted down, kidnapped and brought to the United States to be tried as a spy.”

Which by the way is part of what’s animated the massive protests against Beijing extradition initiative in Hong Kong the past week– the fear of Hong Kongers that they will be dragged off to the dog and pony shows on the mainland if they offend the Chinese Communist Party

The US is not low enough to do that to just anybody but Assange is a high priority target for all the damage he has caused to vested interests.

      1. What makes the Assange matter even scarier is the reality that the source was a leak not a hack.

        https://raymcgovern.com/2019/06/17/justice-dept-soaks-comey-in-deep-kimchi/

The DNC lied, the FBI colluded with the lie, the POTUS was smeared, the public mislead, but TRUMP is weak against these Deep State powers, and he’s letting them punish Assange. Of course after the long and phony “Russia collusion” narrative who would expect him to reach down and quash this ?

He can’t– Nixon telling a federal prosecutor to pull a stupid indictment of Col Rheault for executing the North Vietnamese spy Thai Khac Chuyen, ended up in the Pentagon Papers. Irony!

    2. Has nothing to do with the substance of the article. Just A.’s straw non man drafted to carry a straw opinion.

  10. The Free Press has only itself to blame for the rhetoric that comes from a totally unqualified and unfit person currently holding the position of Chief Executive in our Country.

Instead of questioning the current embodiment of our Government’s legitimacy, they would rather call the action of a Political Rugby Match, between two teams who have no legitimate justification for even being on the field. We have an illegitimately elected President of the Parties Choosing, an illegitimately assembled and empowered Congress of our Major Political Factions, and an illegitimately assembled Supreme Court which only purpose is to legitimize the Game between the Parties as if it were the Constitutionally established Government.

When is the Free Press going to ask, why do we have assembly of Parties in Congress, why do we only have 435 Representatives in Congress, why do the States of WY, and MT only have 1 Representative each if MT has twice the population of WY, why do the Electors not Vote and why are they not selected by a method chosen by each State’s Legislature as the Constitution demands, why isn’t there an independent Vice presidential election as required by the 12th Amendment, and why is the VP chosen by a Party Presidential Nominee to run as a ticket when there is nothing in common about the offices of President and President of the Senate, why do we think that coming to a Bipartisan Majority Consensus is the same as coming to a Majority Consensus of the States according to the Mode of Assembly, Proportional in the House and Equal in the Senate, and why do we believe that Equal Suffrage in Congress means an Equal Right to Vote in a partisan election for Party selected candidates to control Congress and the Legislative process, and when are we going to ask who are the members of Congress and who are the representatives of the members of Congress, because the members of congress have Suffrage, Not The Representatives of the Members?

Well, maybe if the Free Press started to ask real questions in the People’s interest on the People’s behalf, we would have the Government Of, By, and For the People The Constitution Establishes, and the Free Press wouldn’t have a Government that was attacking them, they would have a government of the people that supported them!

    1. If it was a free press there would be no charge to read… or listen to… the substance

  11. If the Press were not biased, as implied in its self-appointment to the Fourth Estate, then a lot of criticism of Trump could have some validity.

Denial is a crippling disease. It can take more than a 2 by 4 to convince because deniers don’t want to be convinced any more than an alcoholic wants to be cured before hitting bottom.

Even if you present the hypothetical that Obama had been a Republican president, excoriated by dishonest journalists to the same degree Trump has been, makes no difference to he who is challenged by denial.

Thank God for life span, without which there would be no attrition, nature’s reset to exterminate rogue consensus that can mean as much as extinction for all of life.

For anyone in touch with the world political climate, there’s no question for the honest observer that conservatism is course-correcting away from militant activism in country after country, a trend that can only continue until attrition wipes out the denial responsible for having diluted life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

  12. Here more news about the utter phoniness of the socalled Russian hacking of the DNC

FBI Never Saw CrowdStrike Unredacted or Final Report on Alleged Russian Hacking Because None was Produced

The FBI relied on CrowdStrike’s “conclusion” to blame Russia for hacking DNC servers, though the private firm never produced a final report and the FBI never asked them to, as Ray McGovern explains.

    By Ray McGovern
    Special to Consortium News

CrowdStrike, the controversial cybersecurity firm that the Democratic National Committee chose over the FBI in 2016 to examine its compromised computer servers, never produced an un-redacted or final forensic report for the government because the FBI never required it to, the Justice Department has admitted.

The revelation came in a court filing by the government in the pre-trial phase of Roger Stone, a long-time Republican operative who had an unofficial role in the campaign of candidate Donald Trump. Stone has been charged with misleading Congress, obstructing justice and intimidating a witness.

The filing was in response to a motion by Stone’s lawyers asking for “unredacted reports” from CrowdStrike in an effort to get the government to prove that Russia hacked the DNC server. “The government … does not possess the information the defandant seeks,” the filing says.

In his motion, Stone’s lawyers said he had only been given three redacted drafts. In a startling footnote in the government’s response, the DOJ admits the drafts are all that exist. “Although the reports produced to the defendant are marked ‘draft,’ counsel for the DNC and DCCC informed the government that they are the last version of the report produced,” the footnote says.

In other words CrowdStrike, upon which the FBI relied to conclude that Russia hacked the DNC, never completed a final report and only turned over three redacted drafts to the government.

Stone on his way to court in February. (Victoria Pickering/Flickr)

These drafts were “voluntarily” given to the FBI by DNC lawyers, the filing says. “No redacted information concerned the attribution of the attack to Russian actors,” the filing quotes DNC lawyers as saying.

In Stone’s motion his lawyers argued: “If the Russian state did not hack the DNC, DCCC, or [Clinton campaign chairman John] Podesta’s servers, then Roger Stone was prosecuted for obstructing a congressional investigation into an unproven Russian state hacking conspiracy … The issue of whether or not the DNC was hacked is central to the Defendant’s defense.”

The DOJ responded: “The government does not need to prove at the defendant’s trial that the Russians hacked the DNC in order to prove the defendant made false statements, tampered with a witness, and obstructed justice into a congressional investigation regarding election interference.”

Thousands of emails from the DNC server were published by WikiLeaks in July 2016 revealing that the DNC interfered in the Democratic primary process to favor former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over Senator Bernie Sanders for the party’s presidential nomination. The U.S. indicted 12 Russian military intelligence agents in 2018 for allegedly hacking the DNC server and giving the emails to WikiLeaks.

    Comey Can’t Say Why

At a time of high tension in the 2016 presidential campaign, when the late Sen. John McCain and others were calling Russian “hacking” an “act of war,” the FBI settled for three redacted “draft reports” from CrowdStrike rather than investigate the alleged hacking itself, the court document shows.

Then FBI Director James Comey admitted in congressional testimony that he chose not to take control of the DNC’s “hacked” computers, and did not dispatch FBI computer experts to inspect them, but has had trouble explaining why.

In his testimony, he conceded that “best practices” would have dictated that forensic experts gain physical access to the computers. Nevertheless, the FBI decided to rely on forensics performed by a firm being paid for by the DNC.

        ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Here Trump imagines that a popular movement will develop to keep him in office beyond the standard 2 terms. This after leaked Republican polls show Trump losing to almost every Democratic candidate in next year’s election.

But this tweet could also signal something ominous. Perhaps Trump has no intention of leaving office if he loses next year. Perhaps Trump will announce, days before the election, that the race is ‘rigged against him’. One recalls that Trump created considerable suspense in the last election by refusing to say if he would acknowledge a defeat.

        1. Peter, at the end of Trump’s 8 years he thinks that people will have learned how much good he has done for this country along with keeping the NYTimes and the WaPo afloat. He will not want to remain any longer. Your thoughts about a president becoming a dictator should be directed towards the Democrats where the real threat lies.

          MAGA

            1. Fishwings you can say that again when we look at the Democrats especially those presently in office, MAGA…Morons Are Governing America. Are you one of them?

      2. Trump wanted to make sure that even those that have cursed him and lied about him knew he wished them a happy father’s day. Nothing wrong with that.

      3. How could you possibly mistake that as a negative comment? Obviously a defective machine part of The Collective so the proper reparte is Ad Machina.

not enough time in the day, why, especially if you hate and mistrust him so much.

obsession! you lose focus on other matters of importance

      1. Kurtz, people ‘should’ be reading Trump’s tweets. They are shockingly delusional on any given day. Said tweets function as a timeline documenting Trump’s fragile mental state.

        1. Peter, what you think is delusional is the reality of the day. You ought to learn the meaning of the word delusional because you seem to be fulfilling its meaning.

        2. he’s trolling you peter. don’t be trolled. it dissipates your human energy.

it’s a strategy used to deflate opposition by exhausting it

  14. and meanwhile last week’s big story of a million people marching against Beijing meddling in Hong Kong got bigger over the weekend to the two million persons marching

And it was barely noticed in the Western mass media

On June 16, 2 million hong kongers marched.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THDqNpCBzZk

Can you imagine if 2 million people marched in an American big city like say Chicago? Gee that would be big news all over the world

    1. Kurtz, I don’t mean to get insulting but your contention that mainstream media isn’t covering Hong Kong is aggressively false and ignorant.

Hong Kong spent much of the weekend in the upper left corner of home pages at both The New York Times and Washington Post. No one interested in that story should have lacked for information.

        1. The criminal trial jury panel was stupid I mean. The civil trial not.

Do you ever wonder why they switched venue to where they did? they lost the trial right there.

Because they were afraid of rioting that’s why. a pathetic failure on the prosecution side from the very start.

            1. oh, it did. they just didn’t like Fuhrman saying the N word. it all came down to that.

then, they conjured up the notion of the bloody glove being planted by him.

It was a clever defense ploy, and F Lee bailey taunted the prosecution to have OJ try on the glove, which of course was all dried up and too small for him, and he made a big act out of not getting it on his hands.

              doesnt fit you must acquit

stupid jury! there was a scintilla of the doubt at best. the case was proven beyond reasonable doubt for sure.

          1. The prosecution screwed up while the defense depended on the stupidity of people like anonymous.

            1. investigations don’t have to be perfect. they mishandled some evidence, and botched some strategic decisions. but there was really no reasonable doubt.

the main mistake was moving it to la. could have been tried in different venue like where it happened, santa monica. no, they moved it to downtown la. why?

              https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1994-10-12-1994285093-story.html

poisoned fruit of political correctness back in 94

              1. Kurtz, Jury selection played a big part and that is probably why the defense moved for a change in venue. However, there were 12 jurors so I think the prosecutorial errors made contributed to the not guilty verdict. A smart black friend at the time gave me a “lecture” as to why the 9 blacks on the jury would vote not guilty. That left 3 where one was Hispanic. People do have a tendency to go along iwth the crowd.

                  1. Kurtz, I am sure that and a lot of other emotions came into play. I think the prosecution’s mistakes were one of the biggest problems because some of the mistakes made augmented these emotions so that he was found not guilty.

      1. I tell you what. I’m expressing my own free speech opinion about the quality of what the NYT and such pick for leader stories. My opinion is, THEY SUCK

You call it false and ignorant? I call them false and ignorant. You keep on sucking their teat Peter if you want to be lead like a cow with a ring in his nose.

The good news is, there’s lots of competition and ferment in the “reporting” business, outside of the majors, which uniformly SUCK

Thank God for the internet. For now. Of course that’s part of the story about Hong Kong too– the Chicoms lock down the internet on the mainland.

I bet there’s a deep vein of gold ore that could be mined, on the subject of how Silicon Valley collaborates with Chicom oppression of the Chinese people

SAN FRANCISCO, June 18 (Xinhua) — China’s southern city of Shenzhen hosted an event in Silicon Valley Monday to seek pragmatic collaboration with the birthplace of U.S. hi-tech innovation.

Shenzhen and Silicon Valley can leverage each other’s advantages in infrastructure and service-related conditions to foster collaborative innovation and create synergy, Wang Weizhong, secretary of the Communist Party of China’s Shenzhen Municipal Committee, said.

He made the remarks at the “China Shenzhen-U.S. Silicon Valley Investment Collaboration and Exchange Conference” hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal Government in Santa Clara, California.

        1. kurtz’s opinion on the media is based on lies he tells himself. When corrected with indisputable facts which demonstrated his ignorance pon this subject, he just doubled down and refused to admit his error.

No wonder he supports Trump and doesn’t know what’s going on.

            1. One of kurtz’s mistatement of facts – it became a lie when he refused to retract it – on this issue was his claim last week that the NYTs hadn’t been covering the Hong Kong protests because the Chinese had them under their thumb. I linked for him a front page NYTs story on the protests from 2 days before kurtz started talking about it – guess his sources were owned by China – and an editorial from the NYTs on the next day denouncing the Chinese position.

China is harvesting organs from Falun Gong members, finds expert panel

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – China is murdering members of the Falun Gong spiritual group and harvesting their organs for transplant, a panel of lawyers and experts said on Monday as they invited further investigations into a potential genocide.

Members said they had heard clear evidence forced organ harvesting had taken place over at least 20 years in a final judgement from the China Tribunal, an independent panel set up by a campaign group to examine the issue.

Beijing has repeatedly denied accusations by human rights researchers and scholars that it forcibly takes organs from prisoners of conscience and said it stopped using organs from executed prisoners in 2015.

But the panel said it was “satisfied” that the practice was still taking place, with imprisoned Falun Gong members “probably the principal source” of organs for forced harvesting.

Falun Gong is a spiritual group based around meditation that China banned 20 years ago after 10,000 members appeared at the central leadership compound in Beijing in silent protest. Thousands of members have since been jailed.

It was less clear if the Uighur Muslim minority had been victims, the tribunal found, thought it said they were vulnerable to “being used as a bank of organs”.

“The conclusion shows that very many people have died indescribably hideous deaths for no reason,” said the tribunal chairman Sir Geoffrey Nice in the judgement.

Chinese government regulations say human organ donation must be voluntary and without payment, said a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in London.

“We hope that the British people will not be misled by rumors,” said a spokesman in an emailed statement sent before the tribunal’s final judgement was released.

The China Tribunal was set up by the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China, a campaign group, charged with examining whether crimes had been committed as a result of China’s transplant practices.

I mean, it’s bad enough that the PRC government is HARVESTING ORGANS FROM PRISONERS of that “cult” but you want to add a cherry on top and tell people they’re into ufos and sumerian whatever? very pathetic!

              2. you call anything a lie you dont agree with we know that

the NYT has had a few articles that they buried on their back pages

                AND THEY SUCKED

you’re so defensive about NYT; are you a paperboy or what?

                1. kurtz thinks you can disagree with facts. No wonder he likes Trump.

He saw the evidence which disproved his rant and he knows it’s not challengeable.

                  1. keep on showing how you and your kind insist on trivialities and miss the forest for your little kookaburra tree~!

excuse me if i stay out of your briar patch!

                  2. why don’t you apologize for mocking Falun Gong on the day when it’s been revealed that the PRC government is harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience? Sad, sick, person!

                2. PS The first article was on the front page, as I proved to you, and they’ve had a front page article every day since.

                  Your a f…g ;liar.

                  1. I would take a screen shot and show you how my nyt web page actually doesnt have a front page article not today and not on friday but I would have to give a crap what you think for starters, and secondly, I don’t even know how to upload a picture like that and dont care if “anon” thinks “mr kurtz” is a liar

now, here we will watch a real piece of reporting from the streets of Hong Kong

                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLktzP3hleo

nothing like that comes from NYT thats for sure

                    1. I don’t “think” Kurtz is a liar, I know it and so does he.

He’s not worth anyone’s time though most of the posters here swear allegiance to another liar, They don;t care and apparently like lies as long as they confirm they’re ignorant opinions.

                    2. you’re a liar for calling me one. but that doesnt really matter. your method and your intention is to distract and project your own talking points. for fun, you guys & gals also like these roundabouts which distract people from the real issues and things you don’t want mentioned.

LIKE HOW BAD THE NYT SUCKS!

                      https://www.google.com/search?q=new+york+times+how+to+cancel+subscription&oq=new+york+times+how+to+cancel+&aqs=chrome.0.0j69i57j69i60j0l3.7108j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

              3. Anon, despite the fact that you have posted this cr-p over and over again and you call Kurtz a liar you still haven’t proven that the NYTimes reported the story in timely manner. I’d like to know if they did or didn’t but you like to state what is or isn’t true without knowing the facts. That makes you a cheat and a liar.

                1. i have a hypothesis, which depends on them being in good faith. Which I question. but let’s assume they truly think I am mistaken, because they saw some prominent HK articles at NYT which I did not. And keep in mind, I did admit that the NYT had some– and I asserted that they “back paged” the articles. Shunted them off the leaderboard which appears on the website, to a back section, like asia news or whatever.

but perhaps they saw them; perhaps they have a paying digital subscription to NYT which then gives them a different layout when they go to the website than I do.

They may also be paper subscribers. i am not. I only subscribe to the Wall Street Journal and the local tabloid style thing.

In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s the explanation here, but he-she’s going to hang on to this provocative statement, nonetheless. Because it’s better than just admitting reality which might impeach the glorious object of idolatrous adoration, the NYT

I could really give a crap if I am fair to the NYT, They don’t care about being fair that’s for sure

                  1. Kurtz, Anon is a joke and a sick one at that. He is infuriated that you hold your position which is OK since Anon hasn’t proven his point. Instead he keeps hammering his thumb with his hammer while you keep smiling. In the end this discussion has a lesser importance than a blade of grass shriviling up in the sun.

  15. “The New York Times spoke for many concerned citizens and journalists on Sunday “Accusing the press of treason is dangerous.” It added that it followed a cautious and responsible course in vetting the story with the Trump Administration: “As our story notes, President Trump’s own national security officials said there were no concerns.”
    **********************
Revealing state secrets is dangerous too especially when it could provoke a nuclear rival. The NYT says it vetted the story with Trump officials but it never says with whom. Was it the NSA director, WH COS or the clerk who leaked the report? Here’s the contradiction they published:

“Officials at the National Security Council also declined to comment but said they had no national security concerns about the details of The New York Times’s reporting about the targeting of the Russian grid, perhaps an indication that some of the intrusions were intended to be noticed by the Russians.”

Well did they comment or not? Did they intend the leak or was that your speculation? I guess we’ll need to consult Orwell.

The press has all the perceived objectivity that an institution who reports negatively about an elected leader in 91% (only 87% for the hoary NYT) of its stories has. Which is to say, not much. Cry “wolf” enough times and folks start to believe you don’t know a wolf from a prairie dog.

The danger to a democracy comes from press-suppressing authoritarians to be sure but just as sinister are wannabe tyrants who wield false ink instead of false charges to get the “utopia” they claim to want for the rest of us. They should remember the words of Sir Thos. More:
“Every eutopia contains a dystopia, every dystopia contains a eutopia.” (Utopia, 1516)
    .

    1. Mespo, if you read the professor’s post it says Pentagon officials are reluctant to brief Trump because they don’t trust ‘him’ to keep secrets.

      1. I think purposefully and habitually and by standard operating procedures, keep each and every POTUS mostly in the dark

The intelligence officials run amuck, as usual.

But in this story the focus should not be on Trump as the bad boy, but the intelligence officials for playing at cyber-sabotage. Exactly why should we be attacking the civilian infrastructure of Russia? Crappy idea in my book but what do i know.

      2. ” Pentagon officials are reluctant”

What Pentagon officials said that? The MSM makes things up. Maybe Pentagon officials would like to go to war and he would like to avoid war. He was elected as President not the Pentagon officials so any Pentagon official that doesn’t come out and publically defend what he said in person is denying his obligations to the nation.

As usual comments such as this are worthless.

      3. I didn’t see any credible sources for that either. The fact is it isn’t their place to decide what is and what isn’t a secret. Any President is the final decision maker on that point . Just because the previous President showed that system has some flaws does not indict nor convict all Presidents.

    2. mespo, the right likes to work the refs, but the problem really comes when you belief it.

Yeah, I know, this article covers a Harvard study and of course they’re part of the conspitacy. Everyone is except those who tell you what you want to hear.

“The study, which analyzed news reports on the main newscasts from the major cable and broadcast networks along with major daily newspapers like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, slammed the press for what it concluded was the “corrosive effect” of mostly negative news throughout the general election…..

According to the analysis, both candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump “received coverage that was overwhelmingly negative in tone and extremely light on policy.” Trump was covered slightly more negatively than Clinton over the course of the general election, with coverage being 77 percent negative to 23 percent positive compared to Clinton coverage running 64 percent negative to 36 percent positive coverage. But over the course of the entire campaign, Clinton was covered more negatively than Trump, with 62 percent negative and 38 percent positive coverage compared to Trump’s coverage, which was 56 percent negative and 44 percent positive.

Both candidates received equally negative coverage on coverage related to the candidates’ fitness for office, including stories about their leadership abilities, ethics, policy positions and personal qualities. Coverage for both candidates on those issues ran at about 87 percent negative to 13 percent positive. The press paid more attention to Clinton’s controversies than to Trump’s, and the tone of that coverage, which made up at least 7 percent of all Clinton coverage every week, was more than 90 percent negative.

“The mainstream press highlights what’s wrong with politics without also telling us what’s right,” Patterson wrote. “It’s a version of politics that rewards a particular brand of politics. When everything and everybody is portrayed as deeply flawed, there’s no sense making distinctions on that score, which works to the advantage of those who are more deeply flawed. Civility and sound proposals are no longer the stuff of headlines, which instead give voice to those who are skilled in the art of destruction.”

Patterson wrote that the negative coverage throughout the general election was beneficial to the right.

“Although conservatives claim that the press has a liberal bias, the media’s persistent criticism of government reinforces the right wing’s anti-government message. For years on end, journalists have told news audiences that political leaders are not to be trusted and that government is inept … The news creates a seedbed of public anger, misperception, and anxiety— sitting there waiting to be tapped by those who have a stake in directing the public’s wrath at government.”

Overall, Trump received more press attention than Clinton, with Trump receiving an average of 15 percent more coverage than Clinton did. Patterson slammed reporters who have defended their coverage of Trump by citing his availability to the press, accusing them of taking the bait on Trump’s words and actions, which he said were tailor made for easy stories.

“Trump’s dominant presence in the news stemmed from the fact that his words and actions were ideally suited to journalists’ story needs,” he wrote. “The news is not about what’s ordinary or expected. It’s about what’s new and different, better yet when laced with conflict and outrage. Trump delivered that type of material by the cart load.”

  16. Sometimes ( er, often…) “investigative reporting” is a specious label used as a crutch to hide its real purpose. Here, as in many, many other examples, the real purpose might be NOT to inform the public of its substantive news, but rather to make the Trump administration look bad and to influence elections. While I am not a fan of Trump’s personality, I trust his juvenile transparency over the conniving machinations of the liberal media.

    1. Well put Lin. Additionally, Trump is hardly the first (or the 1,000th) to play the “treason” card – see e.g., CNN reaction for even MEETING with Putin to improve relations. Of course that was when it was a given that Trump colluded with Russia and would be impeached just as soon as Mueller so found…

  17. If one uses the word treason in the broadest sense let’s take one of these Trump quotes at random and analyze it.

“I think what the Democrats are doing with the Border is TREASONOUS. Their Open Border mindset is putting our Country at risk. Will not let this happen!”

I think what Trump says is absolutely correct.I think Professor Turley makes a mistake by focussing so much on the President’s personal use of words instead of deads. In the present environment no matter what the President does the press will find fault and Turley will comment on it.

  18. Trump and treason, they go together like peanut butter and jelly!

      1. It’s not in a text book it’s in The Constitution of The United States of America for our country.

    1. is that the latest ad machina offering from the propaganda machine of the far left?

  19. New York Times, fake news, tremendously tremendous, blah barf blah. He’s a boring and unlettered broken-record.

    1. NYT fails to report properly on the massive Hong Kong protests against Beijing communist interference over the past week, burying a few insignificant pieces in the back pages

      https://www.theepochtimes.com/nearly-2-million-hong-kongers-protest-extradition-bill-call-for-leader-to-resign_2965486.html

oh, the NYT wrote an article about it over the weekend, but it sucked. LA times does better

      https://www.latimes.com/world/la-fg-hong-kong-protest-20190616-story.html

      1. kurtz is a liar and has already been proven so on this very issue. He was unable to counter the facts but would not admit his error.

Anyone who relies on him for information is doubly foolish and his opinions are also worthless because he refuses to pay attention to what’s going on in the real world.

  20. “Disheartening?” Not a very perfervid reaction. Try “distressing,” or better yet, “disgusting.”
