Two Democratic Presidential Candidates Support Nike In Pulling Sneakers With American Flag

download-1downloadMany of us were appalled by the decision of Nike to pull sneakers displaying the Betsy Ross flag after former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick declared the flag to be offensive.  As I discussed in my column, the decision shows an effort not just to protest the flag or anthem but to deter others who would want to honor it.  Now, two Democratic presidential candidates, former HUD Secretary Julián Castro and Beto O’Rourke have supported Nike in the move.

Castro told CBS News on Wednesday that he was happy to see Nike withdraw the shoes and seemed to compare the Betsy Ross flag to the the “painful” symbol to the Confederate flag:

O’Rourke also agreed that Nike was right to pull the shoes since “white nationalist groups” have “appropriated” the Betsy Ross flag.  As I noted in the column posted today, others have used the flag in protests against segregation, the Vietnam War, and other causes. President Barack Obama featured the flag at his inauguration.

The position of O’Rourke and Castro reaffirm how the Democratic pool is moving rapidly to the left on such issues — giving Trump as a better shot at reelection.

“Although some extremist groups appear to have appropriated the flag, it is not widely viewed as a symbol of hate, and is used in museums that focus on 18th century U.S. history.
A Nike ad featuring former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is on display Sept. 8, 2018, in New York City. Nike withdrew a shoe displaying the so-called Betsy Ross flag after Kaepernick warned the design was associated with slavery and white supremacy movements. But the Anti-Defamation League does not include it in its database of hate symbols.

The Anti-Defamation League does not include it in its database of hate symbols. Mark Pitcavage, a senior research fellow for the ADL’s Center on Extremism, said extremist groups have occasionally used it, but the flag is most commonly used by people for patriotic purposes.

“We view it as essentially an innocuous historical flag,” Pitcavage said. “It’s not a thing in the white supremacist movement.””

The Betsy Ross flag is not more a symbol of white supremacists any more than the present day American flag. You don’t give up your flag just because some kook, somewhere, might fly it at some meeting or rally. Why not just declare potlucks racist because some Klan rally held one?

  2. Of course they do. Democrats are all in now that patriotism is wrong. They want to lead a country they don’t love and have no loyalty towards.

  3. Song for those who are lame and like to blame:

    Dumbshits… call em dumbshits..
What kind of humans are called dumbshits?
Fat kids, skinny kids, kids who climb on rocks…

    etc

  4. This is an IQ test for politicians. Nod along with Nike and you flunk.

  5. Words of wisdom from Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders:

Refer to the linked info, above:

Democratic presidential hopefuls are reacting to President Trump’s Fourth of July celebration plans on the campaign trail today.

    Here’s what they’re saying:

In Storm Lake, Iowa, Mayor Pete Buttigieg told CNN: “Reducing our nation to tanks and shows of muscle just makes us look like the kind off loud mouth guy at the bar instead of the extremely diverse and energetic nation that we are.”

In Slater, Iowa, Sen. Bernie Sanders said: “I think we need money to go into affordable housing. I think we need money to go into rebuilding our infrastructure. I’m not quite sure that we need money to go into put tanks in downtown Washington, DC, frankly.”

  6. Appropriated??!! And O’Rourke thinks he’s going to connect with voters with that nonsense?

    1. It’ll soon be yesterday’s news and few will care or remember.

  7. I’m thinking of running for president as a Democrat. My platform will be, whatever any of my colleagues offers you I will top it by another 10 percent. That should put me in the thick of the running for the free stuff constitutes. I think I’ll start making plans for the new decor in the White House so I can get a running start after I’m elected. If any of you who read this bog have any personal needs you need addressed please forward them to me and I will grease your palm. Respectfully yours, Independent Bob.

    1. I. Bob,
Last time around in 2016, there were about 1700 presidential candidates registered with the FEC. I think it just involves some paperwork and a small fee
      So, go for it!

    2. I want free ice cream to keep people happy. For a couple of dollars, the government can guarantee happiness.

    3. It must be fun to run as a Democrat. All they have to say is tax the rich, free stuff, and they’ll control the weather of the entire planet. Since the rich are a minority, the dictatorship of the majority guarantees that the golden geese are cooked.

  8. There are so many turds floating in the Democratic punch bowl that it’s difficult to tell them apart at this point. Clearly some of those turds recognize this and are doing their best to make themselves stink the most.

  9. Beto and the Twinkies? So what? Are they important or something?

  10. I am continually left speechless by developments in the Democratic party.

I object to any number of things the U.S. government has done and is continuing to do, but thanks primarily to Democrats and to #resist types, I have started displaying the flag, in at least some form. In the face of the constant attacks on our country, its ability to function as a sovereign state, and its heritage, I feel compelled to express support for it. The patriotism inculcated by my liberal Democrat parents is coming back to me.

Increasingly I see that the problem with a liberal or left attitude of constant criticism against one’s own country is that at some point you have to make a decision: do you support your country’s existence at all, or are you willing to just sit back and see it dissolved? I talk to people who seem to think they are deep thinkers because they recognize that Native Americans and African Americans may see our history differently. But at some point one has to stop wallowing in ambivalence and choose a side (or allow others to make a decision about the fate of one’s country, thanks to one’s own inaction).

  11. Makes one wonder who would vote for either one of these anti-Americans, even for dog catcher

    1. “anti-Americans”

The only people who call other Americans “anti-Americans” are not just ignorant, but dangerous.

      1. Yeah……just look at those Americans who ignorantly and dangerously call those Americans in the American Bund “unAmerican”.😉

    1. “Toddler Taliban”

And Cindy Bragg just loves loves loves that expression.

It’s a phrase that, well, only an intellectual toddler might use.

      1. Yes,…I’m proud I created that term….it’s my baby and I’m bursting with pride. I use it as often as possible.
        Thank you for noticing.
Speaking of kids, I’d love to see baby pictures after your pregnant male constituents give birth, per the new magic science from the Democrats. ( Is gestation the same for men carrying babies, as for women??)

        1. “I’m proud I created that term…” Says the Braggy one, who fancies herself to be oh-so clever.

In your dreams, Braggy. The term has been around for years.

  12. The position of O’Rourke and Castro reaffirm how the Democratic pool is moving rapidly to the left on such issues — giving Trump as a better shot at reelection.

Agreed. The Left offer nothing to Americans. The Left throw milkshakes full of concrete mix at their “enemies”, threaten Americans like Lexington, VA Red Hen Restaurant owner Stephanie Wilkinson, to stay at home and not eat at public venues, and continually run around with full TDS all the while retreating to their affluent, comfortable homes behind walls, armored guards and life in a contrived bubble. Fortunately they are

Trump is going to win biggly while O’Rourke and Castro will be content with their 6 figure income guaranteed salaries at the taxpayers expense for doing nothing. No wonder Americans hate them

  13. Pandering.

    But to whom?

The anti-American has to be (hope it is) small.
