Gonzaga University School of Law Visiting Law Professor Jeffrey Omari has written a column in the ABA Journal that demonstrates the increasingly shrill environment faced by conservative students. Omari took to the pages of the Journal to recount his almost breathless encounter with a student wearing a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) hat. Most of us are used to students wearing political hats and teeshirts. I am always happy to see students with such clothing because it shows that they are engaged and passionate regardless of their views. For Omari, the incident was chilling since he declares the MAGA hats worn by many conservatives to be per se racist symbols.
Omari insisted that anyone wearing the hats are advancing “racial antagonism” since they are an “undeniable symbol of white supremacy”:
“From my (progressive) perspective as a black man living in the increasingly polarized political climate that is America, MAGA is an undeniable symbol of white supremacy and hatred toward certain nonwhite groups.”
The hats are the campaign symbol of Donald Trump and many support his policies. Yet, Omari insists “For its supporters, MAGA indexes an effort to return to a time in American history when this country was “great” for some—particularly, propertied white men—but brutally exclusionary for others, most notably women and people of color.” So Trump supporters want to return to a time of brutal suppression of women and people of color?
Omari goes on to describe how he responded, as if a live cougar was thrown into a closed space:
As my blood boiled inwardly, outwardly I remained calm. In an effort to assuage the perceived tension, I jokingly told the student, “I like your hat,” when he raised his hand to participate in class discussion. Without missing a beat, the student mockingly grinned from ear to ear and said, “Thank you.”

With this scholarship in mind, I understood why no one else in this particular class—in which whites outnumbered students of color 20 to three (with me, the instructor, being the lone African American)—seemed as vexed as I was. Indeed, in a class with such racial uniformity, it appeared frivolous to rely on students to speak up on my behalf, as one of my associates suggested. An informal survey of my colleagues revealed that no other law faculty had experienced any students wearing such propaganda in their classes, which furthered my contention that this student was indeed trying to intimidate and/or racially antagonize me.
It is interesting how Omari’s statement about “liking your hat” was not mocking but the student’s response of “thank you” was mocking. It was also insulting to say that, because the fact that the other students were white, it was “frivolous to rely on students to speak up on [his] behalf.” It was frivolous not because of race but because his point was frivolous. The mere fact that some kid wears a MAGA hat does not mean that he is a racist or that he is trying to racially intimidate an African-American professor.
Omari simply concludes that the hat was by definition improper and inciting but that he would receive no support given his position and race:
But when students fail to live up to such professional expectations, what are the professors’ options? Although my position is at a private university, I understood that my lack of tenure, precarious status as a VAP and the hue of my skin meant that I would be fighting an uphill battle should I have asked the student to remove his distracting red hat during class. Surely, there must be protocol when African-American professors—whose presence is scarce in most law schools—find their authority defiantly undermined by an insensitive student.
Of course, it would have been an “uphill battle” to ask for the removal of the hat unless he was asking for the removal of all hats and clothing of all political viewpoints from Antifa hats to pro-choice hats to NRA hats. Omari assumed that the interpretation of the hat (which is not shared by many) was manifestly true. This is part of the trend that we have discussed on campuses where speech is being curtailed as racist or microaggressive based on how it is perceived by others as opposed to how it is intended. In this case, the hat has different meaning to different people. Yet, Omari believes that it should have been barred from the classroom.
Nevertheless, The ABA Journal thought that this harrowing encounter with a MAGA hat in a class warranted publication. Why?
We should stop avoiding the real issue in this case – we are no longer thick- skinned enough to be real Americans as our were the founders of our country. They believed in freedom and if someone was offended so be it. Grow up and move on. The real question is whether this “teacher” is qualified to teach if he is so concerned with what the students wear to class rather than how well he made his presentation so the students would understand the subject matter he was teaching. Res ipsit loquitur says it all.
Most non whites do have a problem because of what the hat or phrase stand for, is that simple and I understand why most white dont get it.

Spokane doesn’t have a very large black population….I doubt if it’s even 5%…..but if Gonzaga worked at it, they might be able to mollify Omari by arranging the on-campus presence of those with headgear more to the professor’s liking.
The professor expressed his wish that political gear of any kind be left at the door to class, by faculty or students. If Tom took the time to read the thoughtful article misrepresented by JT, he’d know that.

I find the quote from Tom above accurate and thoughtful. The comments on this page over time and specifically on this subject, the audience and vote that Trump appeals to and which responds, his attacks on minority “other” groups, his support from neo-Nazis and other alt right citizens, and his dog-whistle appeals to a return to a vague past when those audiences felt in full charge, all to be subtle racism. To most blacks I think the appeal appears less subtle. America wasn’t great for them.

I know the student that professor Omari is referring to. Out of respect for my friend and his family I won’t share his name, but I do feel a need to share a little bit about him. He is one of, if not the most intelligent and gentle people I have the honor of knowing. He is a husband, a father of two amazing daughters, and is actively in the military. If any good can come of the national attention this has received, it’s to share the story of what his 12 year old daughter is doing right now, which is helping her orchestra teacher raise money for his daughter who has brain cancer. My friend’s daughter is so special and kind-hearted, just like her father. When she heard about her teacher’s young daughter and her upcoming brain surgery, my friend’s daughter organized an event to help out for this expensive surgery. She reached out to local businesses and friends to donate products and services to auction off at the event that is to be held this Sunday. This young girl’s efforts are a testimate to what kind of parent and person my friend is. I can’t say enough great things about who my friend is, but I CAN say what he absolutely IS NOT:

2) Taxes were meant to be private when the tax law was passed and reveal very little.
3) I don’t know about the biggest but it was big. The loss was recognized by the IRS who has scrutinized his tax records. He went from that loss that would be the end of most and rebuilt an empire.
4) Trump never went bankrupt personally. One of the people I know had a very high up position at one of the banks that lost money with Trump. He did like Trump but said the bank was always willing to invest with him because he made them money that more than covered their losses. Despite not liking Trump he thought from the beginning that Trump was a fantastic candidate and understood what was needed to move our economy and other things forward.

i explained this before. fractional interest discounting is based on lack of control and lack of marketability which are very real and legit economic concepts and were for decades accepted valuation strategies. even with recent IRS successes pushing back at this, they remain an accepted part of transfer tax planning methodology.

Our political culture has slipped way below the cerebral domain of logic and possibility to the pure expression of innate, hindbrain tribalistic loathing-paranoia.
Joe Biden had a perfect opportunity to be the senior sage of Civics 101 in the debate, arguing for the practical benefits of civility — of constructive disagreement within a broader
context of trust and loyalty. He blew it, apologizing for his remarks about civility within the Senate, and implicitly endorsing the correctness of “guilt-by-flimsiest-association” that
now inhabits the progressive thinker.
There are positive exemplars out there. I thought the way Eric Swalwell made light of Biden’s advanced age with wit and humor demonstrated that civility is not dead. But, then
it counted for nothing in the media’s eyes compared to Kamala Harris’ implicit accusations of racism launched on Uncle Joe. The media doesn’t value civility — maybe the audience who consumes media doesn’t value it anymore. Maybe the audience is looking for dramatic sparks and tribal validation more than a constructive political process.
One thing is certain….the infotainment-rich approach to political problem-solving is producing nothing of long-term value. It is sapping confidence while generating impressive media “analytics”. The question is whether such unproductive political dialog is compatible with America remaining a great nation. As the unsolved challenges pile up (broken immigration system, the mounting national debt and structural deficit, public education mediocrity, the decline of marriage, irreversible pollution of the ecosphere, the ascent of transnational organized crime and its comingling with nation states, the unwillingness to take strong measures to deter cybercrime and international cyberattacks, the creeping surveillance corprocracy – all of which get worse over time. Time is not the friend of the politically-paralyzed nation state.
The last time I posted a video from O’Keefe about Google, Peter Hill complained that there was just one video and one disguised guy. People from Google have released information that is supposed to be kept secret and O’Keefe is asking this disguised man what some of the information on the pages mean.
To satisfy Peter I am posting the next in this series of Project Veritas videos that are examples of some of the best journalism we are seeing in this country. I hope to keep posting such videos to keep people like Peter apprised of what is happening in the world. Other people are risking their jobs releasing information as a service. I hope Peter can understand that.

Professor Omari counts white skins versus black skins in his class to make a point about the political leanings of those students and Gonzaga’s law school in general. Does anyone else notice a strong current of racism and circular reasoning on Omari’s part, strong enough that students in his classes at Gonzaga would be justified in wondering whether their grades in his class would reflect their actual class performance – or Omari’s own political and racial bias? The student wearing the wrong kind of hat to a law school class needs to document his performance in Omari’s class. Unobtrusive video recording wouldn’t be a bad idea.

….. Logical reasoning seems far beyond some people….. I wonder if Omari thought about why they were mostly white kids in is class… Because blacks put far less importance on education, of course…

You better believe the Left hates you and me too. If you always deny your own hate, then you’re going to shut down an important part of your inner life. It’s not wrong per se.
