Washington Attacker On Immigration Center Was An Antifa Member and Featured On CNN

Various news organizations are reporting that the man who threw “incendiary devices” at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington was an Antifa member and appears to have been featured on CNN’s “United Shades of America” with W. Kamau Bell as “one of the good guys.” Police shot and killed Willem Van Spronsen at the scene. However, there has been little coverage of his background or the CNN feature. That is curious given the steady coverage of how right-wing groups are being pushing to violence by the Trump Administration and “alt right” sites. This is not to say that CNN encouraged violence but rather that the level of coverage (and presumed connection with political or media sources) is different.

I have been a long critic of Antifa and its academic supporters. I am not surprised therefore that Van Spronsen posted a manifesto declaring “I am Antifa” or that Antifa members are applauding him as a hero or martyr to their cause.

What is more interesting is the May 5th episode of United Shades of America where Bell seems to relish the individuals are the “good guys,” including Van Spronsen, 69. Bell featured what he billed as the “Redneck Revolt,” gun-toting liberals who are battling the “alt-right.” Bell follows them to gun ranges and asked why “more white people” are not joining their ranks.

Bell explained that the “Redneck Revolt” “protects counter-protesters, feeds the hungry and fights right-wing extremis.

Particularly after the attack on journalist Andy Ngo, one would think that this coverage would raise the same concerns over rising political violation. It hasn’t.

I do not in any way believe that Bell encouraged violence. I have never seen his show but it would seem a legitimate and interesting subject for an episode. However, the same can be true about conservatives who are regularly blamed for violence, including Trump. I have repeatedly condemned Trump for this rhetoric, including just yesterday in a blog column. Yet, the coverage on political violence seems to be focused almost exclusively on the right despite the rising number of attacks by Antifa and related groups.

        Conservatives need to be objective, non-partisan and steadfast in denouncing political violence.

          1. Many of the attacks attributed to the right are coming from groups disavowed by the right and have leftist origins.

            Richard Spencer who is said to have named the alt-rightmovement believes in socialism and national health insurance. That sounds more on the left than on the right even though he is a White Nationalist.

              In both the Umpqua and Toronto cases, there were mental health issues……looks like both murders where briefly in the military, then washed out or were booted out.
              I couldn’t find a “political element” involved in either case.

Even if they know the criteria they frequently don’t know enough about the group they are talking about. I’m not judging pbianca here only encouring her to define her terms and then provide proof for what she believes. Look at the discussions that have occurred on this list as to whether Turley is left or right. Now the same is occurring with Dershowitz among leftists.

          I’m not familiar with the political views/ affiliations of the perpetrators in most of these cases.
          I’m somewhat familiar with the Umpqua Community College shooting on Roseburg, Oregon, since I’d been in Roseburg several months before the shooting and know the are a bit.
          I never saw anything mentioned about the shooter’s politics, and I just did a quick search to check and could find nothing.
          His “manifesto”, published a couple of years after the murders, indicted an interest in the occult.
          He claimed to be part of a “demonic Hierarchy”, which could possibly mean that he was a Democrat😉😄, but other than that I couldn’t find any political motive or affiliation.

          The Isla Vista shooting, the Umpaqua Community College shootings, the Munich Mall shootings, the Aztec High School shootings, the Toronto van attack, the Tallahassee shooting were all perpetrated by people who had idiosyncratic motives which derived from their personal life. That’s six of your fourteen examples.

          As for the remainder, the perpetrators in Poway, Christchurch, Pittsburgh, and Charleston were all bachelors who had no association with any organization where people actually meet and act in common. They were lone wolves.

          Three of the remainder (the guy in Wisconsin, the Overland Park guy, and the fellow in Britain) actually did have organizational memberships (though, notably, no family). However, all of them were in bizarre fringe organizations that have nothing to do with ordinary starboard politics (and which, of course, receive no succor in the media or academe).

Just take a look at where we are right now, with the lack of any unifying leadership consistent with our American ideals that all people are created equal and endowed with the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. At his campaign rallies, Trump encouraged people to physically attack verbal protesters. He encouraged law enforcement officers to not protect the heads of suspects when they are placed into squad cars. He praised White Supremacists, even after they killed a protester. He intentionally separates young migrant children from their parents and cages them and their parents, sometimes under horrific dehumanizing conditions, to serve as a deterrent for seeking asylum. The Hypocrite-in-Chief, Evangelist Mikey Pence, saw and smelled what his administration is doing to these people, along with Lindsey Graham, and pivoted to blame Democrats for not giving Trump a blank check. No compassion, no empathy whatsoever. Trump launched into a racist diatribe against 4 female members of Congress that, with a couple of exceptions, has not been condemned by Republicans. In fact, that is a campaign strategy: to paint Democrats as all being radical socialists by trying to put the faces of these 4 women of color on the Democratic Party, because maybe Moscow won’t be able to come through again this time. Anything to keep those tax cuts and roll backs of consumer and environmental protections. Anything to keep power, to keep those cameras on the Dotard.

    So you have Antifa. Are you surprised? Things will only get worse as time rolls on, and rioting may not be far off. America deserves better and is better than Trump.

    1. Natacha, when Trump was campaigning for president and whipping mostly White crowds into fits of rage, my fear was that he would provoke a backlash among similarly ignorant leftists. And Trump has! It’s like Newtown’s law of motion. For this reason presidents have historically sought to ‘unite’ the country with unifying themes.

      But Trump, being our first Fox News president, practices the politics of division. That is he thinks division is desirable. In such an environment, the lunatic fringe from both ends feels a sense of empowerment.

Ignoramus equals violence. People could get killed, so we end up with the optics of Selma all over again with more wounds that need healing.     Professor Turley (and rightwing media) repeatedly refer to Antifa as a bona fide movement representing liberal sentiments in the U.S. The idea seems to be that Antifa is loosely connected to the Democratic Party. In reality ‘Antifa’ is just a very broad term that applies to any group of anti-Trump hard-liners. No group needs credentials to call themselves ‘Antifa’.

    1. Does anyone here really think JT is a conservative of any stripe? I read JT extensively, am acquainted with him personally and I can assure anyone that he is a self proclaimed liberal who believes in free speech but holds liberal views on most other issues.

    Antifa is very violent and is far more violent today than any other group. It seems both sides disavow the Nazi’s and White Nationalists though the origins of the Nai’s clearly come from the left and many White Nationalists support leftist policies. The right (conservatives, classical liberals etc.) are generally not politically violent. I don’t think the Nazi’s have that much power but I do note that Antifa has been said to have as many as 15,000 members in NYC.

    I think we can better define where the violence comes from if we divide the political spectrum into three parts instead of left vs right (where the right is anything the left wishes to disavow). Right, Left and Nazi type despite the fact that the Nazi evolves from the communists.

  18. This is just confirmation of what most Americans know – CNN is biased, partisan, and dishonest.

    If you are a Pinko, you watch CNN for confirmation bias.

    If you are a conservative, you read the WAPO because it has nuggets of truth in the bias (and is a pretty good news source).

WAPO is the same as NYT or CNN etc if there are nuggests of truth they are twisted to suit anti Constitutionalist pro Marxist Leninist dogma and is in NO WAY a pretty good news source as they or any of their equally twisted supporters be credited with any morals, values, ethics or ability to be truthful as it pertains to Constitutional Centrists and decent citizens.

  19. I believe if Fox had featured someone on the right who had committed such an act, CNN et al would have been all over them blaming Fox for the violence. I believe the absence of any attempt to report on the Left’s increasingly violent behavior is one of the most frightening things of all. I’ve been hoping for some evidence of sanity at CNN, but obviously there is none.
