University of Mississippi law professor James Thomas has previously caused a stir with intemperate comments about how conservative senators like Ted Cruz “don’t deserve your civility” and how people should attack them in public. Thomas, who was recently given tenure over opposition at the school, is back in the news by declaring that “MAGA teens are modern day Hitlerjugend [Hitler Youth]. Got a uniform and everything.”
Thomas identifies himself as “Husband. Father. Sociologist. Sower of Discourse. Slayer of Nazis. Author of books. Tenured (with dissent) since 2019.”
His tenure was indeed controversial. Thomas dew considerable ire with his comments following the protests against Cruz at a restaurant, which I criticized in the past. Thomas celebrated the action and encouraged others to be even more aggressive: “don’t just interrupt a Senator’s meal, y’all. Put your whole damn fingers in their salads. Take their [appetizers] and distribute them to the other diners. Bring boxes and take their food home with you on the way out. They don’t deserve your civility.”
The school recommended Thomas for tenure but the decision was debated by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. A divided board upheld the recommendation of the school. In my view, it was the correct decision. There is no evidence that Thomas’ intolerant and reckless comments on social media have been manifest in his conduct as an academic or teacher. It is certainly a matter of concern since the school likely has a significant number of students that Thomas considers Hitler youth. Yet, the school reviewed his record and not incident has been reported that show that Thomas’ extreme views on social media have influenced his teaching or treatment of students.
After the tenure vote, Thomas is back again spewing intolerant and offensive remarks on social media.

I know little about Thomas or his background. What little interest I had in that background evaporated with his latest tweet. However, his tenure vote highlights an ongoing concern for those of us in the free speech community. I support the right of faculty — and all people — to be able to espouse controversial views (even offensive views) in their private time so long as those views do not interfere with their employment.
As we have previously discussed (including a story involving an Oregon professor), there remains an uncertain line in what language is protected for teachers in their private lives. The incident also raises what some faculty have complained is a double or at least uncertain standard. We have previously discussed controversies at the University of California and Boston University, where there have been criticism of such a double standard, even in the face of criminal conduct. There were also such incident at the University of London involving Bahar Mustafa as well as one involving a University of Pennsylvania professor. Some intolerant statements against students are deemed free speech while others are deemed hate speech. There is a lack of consistency in these actions which turn on the specific groups left aggrieved by out-of-school comments.

Don’t expect this First Lady on the cover of Vogue. Anna Wintour shaded Melania Trump for Michelle Obama, and we’re screaming. The Vogue Editor-in-Chief was interviewed on a recent episode of the podcast, The Economist Asks, where she was asked about the current First Lady’s fashion sense. Wintour’s response? Side-stepping the question completely in favor of former First Lady, Michelle Obama.
Conversation around Melania Trump started when Wintour and host Anne McElvoy discussed the First Lady and President Donald Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom in June. Wintour noted that she believes Trump “very consciously” wore British brands for the visit. McElvoy then asked Wintour for her thoughts about Trump’s recent fashion choices, which is when the conversation became a little more shady. Wintour answered by ignoring McElvoy’s question entirely and talking about Michelle Obama instead.
“Well, I think first lady Michelle Obama really was so incredible in every decision she made about fashion,” Wintour said. “She supported young American designers. She supported designers, indeed, from all over the world. She was the best ambassador that this country could possibly have in many ways, obviously, way beyond fashion.”
That’s when McElvoy circled the conversation back to Trump by asking, “But she’s not the first lady now. So what about the one you’ve got now?” But Wintour didn’t bite. Instead of saying her true thoughts on Trump’s fashion, the Vogue editor responded, “To me, [Obama] is the example that I admire”
However, Wintour didn’t avoid every Trump question. In response to a question earlier in the interview about why Trump has been featured on Vogue’s website but never in the magazine, Wintour had this to say: “There’s so many women in politics that deserve celebration, whether it’s Kirsten [Gillibrand] or Senator Harris, or Senator Warren.
She continued, “We just recently ran a piece in our current issue about five of the six political female candidates, all of which I felt deserved a place in Vogue. And how wonderful that after a lot of naysayers saying that after [Hillary Clinton] not succeeding that it would be very difficult to find a voice in the current presidential campaigns. How wonderful that that is not the case. I think that both Senator Warren and Senator Harris are among the top candidates right now.”
McElvoy then asked if Trump is “not the right” person to feature in Vogue, to which Wintour responded, “I think it’s important for Vogue to support women who are leading change in this country.”
Wintour’s comments come after an April 2019 interview with CNN, in which she explained why Trump has been the only First Lady in recent terms to not be on the cover of Vogue. “You have to stand up for what you believe in and you have to take a point of view,” Wintour said. “We profile women in the magazine that we believe in the stand that they’re taking on issues we support them, we feel that they are leaders.”
In response to Wintour’s comments to CNN, a spokesperson for the First Lady told Fox News that a fashion cover “doesn’t define” Trump or her legacy. “To be on the cover of Vogue doesn’t define Mrs. Trump, she’s been there, done that long before she was first lady,” spokesperson Stephanie Grisham told Fox News in April. “Her role as first lady of the United States and all that she does is much more important than some superficial photo shoot and cover. This just further demonstrates how biased the fashion magazine industry is, and shows how insecure and small-minded Anna Wintour really is.”

During the Cold War, East Germany created a “Stasi” (or communist secret police force) to search and investigate citizens without a judicial warrant and without probable cause of committing a crime, to police political speech and political activity. Our First Amendment, Fourth Amendment and remaining Bill of Rights outlaws such practiced in the USA. Starting with the War on Drugs [4th Amendment subversion-warrantless searches] and continuing after 9/11 we largely abandoned the American model for the foreign style authoritarian model. Not a Trump fan myself, but subverting the American system didn’t start with Trump! Both parties played a part. The big question is how to restore the American “constitutional rule of law” system?

Despite record investment in diversity infrastructure, racial inequality persists in higher education. … In this article, I make use of more than two years of ethnographic fieldwork to describe and analyze diversity’s articulation at Diversity University (DU), a public, flagship university in the American South. My findings reveal what I characterize as a diversity regime: a set of meanings and practices that institutionalizes a benign commitment to diversity, and in doing so obscures, entrenches, and even intensifies existing racial inequality by failing to make fundamental changes in how power, resources, and opportunities are distributed. I identify three key components of DU’s diversity regime. Condensation illustrates how diversity’s definitional work disassociates it from race-consciousness, which I define as a shared meaning of diversity that centers the need to redistribute power, resources, and decision making among historically underrepresented groups. Decentralization highlights the absence of institutional oversight over diversity activities, a lack of coordination across divisions and departments, and the resulting frustrations among those involved. Finally, staging difference centers on DU’s strategic deployment of people of color, which gives the impression of transformative change. Diversity workers are cognizant and critical of this staging, expressing a sense of feeling like props and recognizing they gain little, if any, additional power and control over decision making or resource management.

I studied medicine in PR years ago and I see the US following the same exact path of PR, Cuba, Venezuela, et al
In PR the locals were deeply divided on people living off of “el mantengo” (Spanish for welfare). Those who worked largely left while those dependent on “el mantengo” have stayed. Departing for America for the latter would mean working, sacrificing, assimilating and learning English, all anathema.
PR was a great island when I studied there but I no longer recognize the place. Muy triste…very sad
I used to take quick vacations to Puerto Rico but that never afforded me an opportunity to see the real island. The medical school is an old one. I know its students had to be bilingual but do they teach in English or Spanish?
Since PR is a US territory, all 4 MD schools in PR are accredited as US medical schools by the US accrediting agency, the LCME. Pre-Clinical years (instruction/didactic classes) lasts 2 years and is in English given that the medical board exams are in English. Clinical Rotations are the latter 2 years and in PR is in Spanish considering that the population is Puerto Rican.
PR was a beautiful place with magnificent resorts, beaches, restaurants and the people were largely diverse: educated, researchers, physicians, engineers, etc as well as campesinos /jabaros, and humble folk. The island suffered greatly these past 5 years with a brain drain and what has stayed behind are people who depend on the US subsidies to sustain them since their agricultural independence was flattened and their ability to produce has been supplanted with imports. America is not too far behind
Thank you for answering my question. It seems Puerto Rican Medical schools are run the same way as American Medical schools. I know of Puerto Ricans that went to medical school in Puerto Rico but I am unfamiliar with mainland Americans going to medical school there. I assume the entrance requirements are difficult like the mainland schools.

One of the problems I have with immigration is it can create a brain drain which is unfair to the nation from where the immigrant came. It also acts as a safety valve to governments that aren’t treating their citizens fairly and indirectly promotes those things we don’t want to see.
It is harder to get into medical school in PR because you must know Spanish. Clinicals are strictly in Spanish. I am a US Citizen but not from here which is why I proudly tell Americans to leave if they hate America like Omar Ilhan, Enigma and all leftists who disparage America.
Given that PR is a US Territory and are LCME accredited, all 4 MD schools there have the same exact curriculum as the 50 states MD schools. Tuition in PR is a fraction of the cost in US schools. Some MD schools in America today are over $90K / year for tuition alone (Illinois).
Unlike law students, MD students must pass multiple board exams during medical school to earn the MD Degree, then upon graduation take another series of board exams within specific area of specializations to practice. It doesn’t matter which MD school you attend as they all offer the same curriculum. What matters is the training a new MD graduate receives after medical school called Residency, (think of OTJ) and that can determine a lot. Getting into Residency is largely contingent upon medical board exam scores during medical school.

Medicine depends a lot on the individual’s ability to learn on his own and to teach those with less experience while learning from those with more. I don’t know that our medical education is that bad though I suspect that the pool of individuals going into the field of medicine has changed. I think we ask too much of the medical profession. Very poorly at least where Medicare fraud is involved and in the process Medicare hurt physicians that did nothing wrong. Many of their actions in dealing with questions of billing are ilegal and many times Medicare has been taken to court and lost. I can’t say that is the same for the present or recent past though I suspect it hasn’t changed.

This so-called professor is not temperate or rational, showing little interest in actually understanding other viewpoints. This disinterestedness in understanding other perspectives, especially whilst spouting ideologically-driven commentary, most certainly affects him as an “academic”. If he is not in the habit in his personal life to be curious, to be interested in what he does not yet know, then why would that suddenly manifest itself in his professional life? I am doubtful.

The professor isn’t the first person to recognize the authoritarian tendencies in Trump & Company. More voices need to be heard to counter the growing fear that Trump might well provoke chaos if he loses the 2020 election.

It should come as no surprise that he then goes on to describe this project further referencing diversity and inclusion, but not one word about civil discourse.
Civil discourse is not in his vocabulary and if it is the meaning is different from something we would recognize. His arrogance is the type of arrogance that permits the Hitler’s, Stalin’s and Mao’s to exist. Thomas is one of those small fish in that much larger pool. It seems the various university departments of sociology produce this type of creature on a regular basis.
