“The Truth Hurts”: Trump Joins In On “Fredo” Mockery Of Chris Cuomo

Youtube screenshot

As many of you know, I am a constant critic of the loss of civility in our society. For that reason, I was not critical of CNN host Chris Cuomo when he reacted angrily to a guy who went out of his way to insult Cuomo by calling him “Fredo,” a reference to the weak, older brother of Michael Corleone. After calling Cuomo “Fredo,” the man mocks him further by saying “I thought that was who you were.” Cuomo responds with profanity, which is captured on video and went viral. I am sympathetic to Cuomo when people believe that they have license to insult celebrities and suspend basic rules of civility just because someone is on television. It is particularly disturbing to have the President of the United States join in the mockery and lower his office to the level of a troll.

In the  viral video Cuomo is captured slang “No, punk-ass b—-es from the right call me ‘Fredo.’ My name is Chris Cuomo. I’m an anchor on CNN,” Cuomo responded. “‘Fredo’ was from ‘The Godfather.’ He was a weak brother and they use that as an Italian slur — are any of you Italian?… It’s a f—ing insult to your people. It’s an insult to your f–kin’ people. It’s like the N-word for us. Is that a cool f—ing thing?”

First, two points of needed clarification. First, the analogy to The Godfather is misplaced. Fredo was the older brother of Michael and was upset for that reason in being “passed over” for head of the family after Sonny was killed. Chris Cuomo is the younger brother to Gov. Michael Cuomo. Moreover, being a CNN host is hardly an example of a failure. While Cuomo has garnered much opposition for his criticism of Trump on CNN, he remains a major media figure — hardly the sleazy sycophantic figure of Fredo.

Second, while Cuomo says that “Fredo” is the Italian version of the “n-word.” To answer his question to the heckler with the camera, I am Italian and it is not. (What is weird is that Cuomo himself once joked about being the Fredo of the family).

To his credit, Cuomo did apologize though the one most responsible in my view is the heckler: “Appreciate all the support but – truth is I should be better than the guys baiting me. This happens all the time these days. Often in front of my family. But there is a lesson: no need to add to the ugliness; I should be better than what I oppose.”

Trump however decided that it was appropriate for the President of the United States to come down in support of some bar troll who likes to insult celebrities. “I thought Chris was Fredo also. The truth hurts. Totally lost it! Low ratings @CNN.”

This tweet, like too many from the President, caters to the lowest common denominator in our society. It not only supports uncivil and rude conduct but actually joins in heaping insults on someone viewed as a critic. While many may enjoy this type of WWE banter, many of us do not. Many of us still respect the Office of the President as a symbol of our highest — not lowest — aspirations.

  1. It definitely sounds like Mr. Turley is speaking from direct experience.

  2. ” I am sympathetic to Cuomo when people believe that they have license to insult celebrities and suspend basic rules of civility just because someone is on television. @POTUS’s Tweets are embarrassing to some of his defenders. But I’m not aware of any instance where he ever threatened to “wreck someone’s s–t” or kick someone down a flight of stairs, on or off Twitter.

    https://youtu.be/Sp0OvOkq5ZQ

On that, CNN defends Chris Cuomo against charges of impropriety and Professor Turley, you’re oddly silent. Cuomo was clearly within his rights to exchange barbs with a heckler, but most on-air personalities at his pay grade wouldn’t have. But threatening to beat someone up and kick them down a set of stairs is far worse than anything President Trump did or said. Calling someone “Fredo” should have caused, at worst, a retort of “Cletus” (the slack jawed yokel from The Simpsons).

  3. The footage shows Cuomo didn’t just lose it. He physically threatened the heckler. The new standard for liberal TV talent apparently includes actual violence (or has ABC fired Alec Baldwin for popping someone else on over a parking space?). But @POTUS never threatened anyone in his Tweets. He just sadistically hoisted Chris Cuomo on his own petard. Hardly a foul.

  4. Mr. Turley, I am a big fan of yours and I try to read everything that you write. However, I disagree with you on the Cuomo reaction and the President’s tweet. Cuomo and the rest of the hosts at CNN and MSNBC have called the President a Nazi, a Putin puppet, a liar, a racist, just about every horrible insult they can pin on him and his family. I think the President deserves the right to respond in kind against these foul-mouthed thugs, who call themselves journalists, but are just a group of hacks who spew hate and disrespect towards our duly elected President. I will continue to read your commentaries because you are a voice of reason in an unreasonable world.

Anyone else see this statement as “civility for me but not for thee”? Why was Cuomo excused from the constraints of civility in his response. Because he was angry? I’ve always thought civility, at its best, was a two- way street and, at its worst, was used by the powerful as a tool to get the less powerful to just shut up. Cuomo’s “uncivil” punching down here seems to demonstrate the latter. There are bounds to what people should do in public to show displeasure. However, this heckler did nothing more than ask a pointed question and was met with something akin to ‘roid rage. So who really is the “uncivil” one?

    1. One of Prof. Turley’s competetors in blawging is Ann Althouse. She has a tag ‘civility bullsh!t’, a phrase also favored by Glenn Reynolds. Whatever abstract value civility may have, it is seldom invoked in good faith in the culture in which we live.

      1. well you may not know this since you’re not a lawyer but “Civility” is a constant refrain from the judicial thought police who take licenses away from lawyers who commit throughtcrime and badtalk under RPC 8.4.

it’s becoming a bully stick to use on us when we take our advocacy too seriously

        1. i have a little case at hand where a friend is struggling. a young lady lawyer and a young lady judge are bullying the hell out of an old lady with an old man lawyer. the lawyer thinks she has the judge in her pocket and maybe she does and they are misusing contempt in a civil case.

the kind of fierce words that could push them back, i am sure the old guy is afraid to use, because he told me so. he knows what to say but he’s afraid he’ll be tagged a bully himself and end up with a false disciplinary beef to compound the false contempt now aimed at his client.

if he is smart maybe he will just let his own client get screwed. yes, we sometimes think about that when the system is intimidating us into letting it happen.

you see this is the strange logic of a lot of antibullying civility talk. it is actually used to bully people who are not in the “in” crowd

so a lot of this civility talk is just nonsense from the usual pc apparatchiks

          1. Mr. Kurtz:
Tell the old man he needs to withdraw if he’s afraid to do his job. Say what you have to and make a record the appeals court and the judiciary oversight committee can’t ignore. Better to go out of the courtroom with a bang than be pushed out by two shrews.

  6. “As many of you know, I am a constant critic of the loss of civility in our society.”

Turley is critical of over half of his normal commenters,

“For that reason, I was not critical of CNN host Chris Cuomo when he reacted angrily to a guy who went out of his way to insult Cuomo by calling him “Fredo,” a reference to the weak, older brother of Michael Corleone.”

But he’s not critical of two grown men acting like little children.

Sticks and stones …. Cuomo is so insecure, that words hurt his little feelings!

  7. Soooo… I take from this that words do matter? I think we, as a nation, need to come to a consensus on this because we’re all beginning to sound rather hypocritical.

Words matter when a former DA-turned-news-commentator makes a tweet that she then has to delete. Words matter when Dems call people racists with no proof other than their ‘feelings’ on the matter. Words matter when Mainstream Media spins information to make it appear more troubling or drastic.

But…when the President of the United States uses words to give the impression that illegal aliens are ‘rapists and murders’ or encourages the attendees at a rally to commit physical violence – those words are suddenly powerless.

That when the President uses his elevated platform to demean, degrade, and insult people (many of which, Trump doesn’t even know) that is ‘plain speaking’ and ‘telling the truth’ or ‘hitting back as hard as he’s hit’. BUT never, NEVER are those words to be accountable for inciting ill-feelings, frustration, anger – even violence?

Words do matter. Words are a creative force, they can be used to create unity, strength and common sense or they can be used to create feelings of paranoia, anger, resentment. No one is exempt from responsibility when using words irresponsibly.

Words matter and if they don’t then why do we bother at all with ANYTHING that anyone says.

There’s a young woman serving prison time for having tweeted encouragement to a young man debating suicide. She has been held accountable for his death because of her words.
Lets all stop pretending that words don’t matter and can’t create mayhem.

    1. V:
No one (except you) ever suggested that words don’t matter or even that people ever thought words don’t matter. In fact here, they matter quite a bit to prove Cuomo’s, and by extension, the Left’s hypocrisy. Words have that wonderful quality of serving as a medium for ideas both good and bad and as means of their proof. That’s why words and their foundational ideas are legally protected. Leftists hate words because they have the power to skewer bad people and bad ideas. That’s really what Cuomo objects to in the video. So kindly don’t put words about words in our mouths.

    2. But…when the President of the United States uses words to give the impression that illegal aliens are ‘rapists and murders’

The president pointed out two social realities: that, by and large, illegal aliens aren’t the flower of their countries of origin and (2) there is a criminal element among illegal aliens. Partisan Democrats manufacture cardborad martyrs of their mascot groups and are enraged when someone points out that a great many among their mascots have ordinary failings and then some. Because partisan Democrats are crude, shallow, and childish as a matter of course.

      1. TIA:
“Because partisan Democrats are crude, shallow, and childish as a matter of course.”
        **********
And those seem to be their best qualities over race-baiting, fomenting insurrection and denying rights – or even humanity – to their opposition

      2. Crime is not a distinguishing characteristic of immigrants, legal or illegal. Their rates on this criteria are lower than native born Americans. Putting aside TIA’s uninformed comments about partisan democrats, his post makes clear again that many partisan Republicans, and especially those on this board, are f…..g idiots.

        1. Again, Anon demonstrates his lack of understanding of statistics.

We don’t really have accurate estimates of crime from Illegals and many times when arrested we don’t list them as illegal or know that they are illegals.

Let us look at the totality of crime.

Illegal entry into the US is illegal 100% are guilty of.
Using a phony social security number is illegal.
Getting benefits is illegal and presently being addressed. Many estimate that at least one person in 50% of Illegal families are getting underserved benefits.

How can anyone say that crime from illegals is less than crime from Americans?

          1. 30 percent of federal prisoners are immigrants, DOJ/DHS reports

Immigrants accounted for more than 30 percent of the federal prison population and nearly all of them are confirmed or suspected illegal immigrants, the government said in a new report Tuesday.

The government said it had 57,820 immigrants in its prisons as of Dec. 31, Homeland Security and the Justice Department said in the joint report.

Nearly 20,000 other immigrants were held in pretrial detention by the U.S. Marshals Service, most of them in contracted facilities, costing the government $134 million for just three months. That works out to nearly $90 a day for each person in those contract facilities.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said there shouldn’t be any illegal immigrants in prisons, because they shouldn’t have been in the country in the first place.

“Every crime committed by an illegal alien is, by definition, a crime that should have been prevented,” he said in releasing the report. “It is outrageous that tens of thousands of Americans are dying every year because of the drugs and violence brought over our borders illegally and that taxpayers have been forced, year after year, to pay millions of dollars to incarcerate tens of thousands of illegal aliens.”

President Trump last year ordered the Justice and Homeland Security departments to produce a regular count of immigrants in prisons to give taxpayers a sense for one of the costs the government bears.

The total federal prison population is about 185,000, so immigrants would account for about 31 percent. The vast majority are people who have been ordered to be deported, making them illegal immigrants once their sentences are completed. About 8 percent are illegal immigrants the government has asked a judge to order to be deported, and another 5 percent are legal immigrants whom the government is also trying to deport in light of their crimes.

A very small number — 169 — have been granted a specific protection and cannot be deported.

The numbers are from last year, or before the new zero tolerance policy the administration has adopted at the border. Under that policy, nearly every person who crosses the border illegally is being charged with a crime for illegal entry, a misdemeanor. If they’ve been deported before and try to sneak back, they’re charged with illegal re-entry, a felony.

Outside the prisons, the U.S. Marshals Service also held 19,688 confirmed immigrants as of Dec. 31, and another 3,022 whose status was still being investigated.

Those numbers could shoot up in future reports thanks to the zero tolerance policy, which is adding hundreds of immigrants a week to the court dockets in California, Arizona and Texas.

The report said 29 percent of the immigrants in federal prisons are serving immigration-related charges such as sneaking back in after being deported, or smuggling other illegal immigrants.

Nearly half of the migrants in federal custody were there for drug smuggling or dealing.

Sex offenders accounted for 2 percent. Fraudsters were 4 percent and another 4 percent were in for weapons offenses.

The report singled out some of those in federal custody, like Anibel Rondolpho Rodriguez, an MS-13 gang member who is serving a 45-year sentence after pleading guilty to gang-related involvement in two murders and two other attempted murders.

Two others singled out for mention were a man who had been in the U.S. legally and his partner in crime, an illegal immigrant, who were manufacturing homemade grenades. Some were sold in the U.S. while others were being shipped to Mexico. At the time of his arrest, the lead bombmaker was working to build a batch of 200 grenades, the government said.

              1. obviously wrong but hold onL 15% of federal prisoners are MEXICANS? i would have thought less than ten percent. WOW

the true number is very very bad. wow.

compared to that the Mariel boatlift was nothing

                remember that? mmmm watch SCARFACE

                1. Relatives of mine helped build the Federal holding pen for Marielitos in Calcasieu Parish, LA.

Of course, good-thinking liberals didn’t have a problem with locking them up, the way they think we shouldn’t scrutinize our would-be new chums from south of the Rio Grande for criminal records (and whether the kids they are found with are actually related to them, or victims of human trafficking).

Some liberals have a problem with screening “family groups” to identify and rescue victims of human trafficking (an estimated 10 percent of children found illegally entering in those “family groups” are unrelated to any adult in those groups – which means they are not with their actual families).

That they can claim to have the “moral high ground” without a Washington Post or factcheck.com “fact check” shows the press’ active collusion with that side of the argument over unrestricted illegal immigration.

                  1. Pardon me. The government’s facility for Marielitos is in Allen Parish, LA.

              2. Quote what you wish. They are locked up in jail.

Politifact is nothing but a spin machine so no one in their right mind would draw a conclusion based on what they say.

100% of illegal aliens have not respected our laws and broken them on day 1. They are an insult to every legal immigrant who respected our laws and came in legally. They make it more difficult for those looking for legal immigration to enter our country.

There are those that support illegality and those that support the law. I believe in the law.

            1. Allan’s source:

              https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/jun/7/30-percent-federal-prisoners-are-immigrants-dojdhs/

              From Wikipedia:

“Throughout its history, The Washington Times has been known for its conservative political stance.[6][7][8][9] It has drawn controversy for publishing racist content, including commentary and conspiracy theories about United States president Barack Obama[10][11] and support for neo-Confederatism.[12] It has published material promoting Islamophobia.[13] It has published many columns which reject a scientific consensus on climate change,[14][15][16] as well as ozone depletion[17] and second-hand smoke.[18][19]”

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Washington_Times

              And Allan complains about PolitiFact.

              1. The Washington Post and the NY Times for almost 3 years have created a hoax based on anonymous sources. It appears now that the documentation is being released that the right wing sources were mostly correct and the left incorrect and exposed as liars.

The Washington Times has certainly been more correct that the Washington Post and politifact.

One has to question all media, but many even on this blog don’t bother doing so rather they utilize character assassination instead of facts. That has caused the nation to pay dearly since instead of fixing our problems we have seen the focus on hiding the truth and preventing things from being done to benefit the American public. Today after a couple of years some on this blog still believe the Steele Dossier was accurate and most of the rest haven’t bothered to appologize for their errors regarding this dossier. You wish to use evidence from those that have been consistently wrong. That is why you have been consistently wrong and a lot stuff that you have written represented nonsense.

          2. Alan, here’s Koch Bros Cato Institute with a report on Undocumented Immigrants And Crime. I haven’t read the entire study. But the opening paragraphs strongly indicate that Undocumented Immigrants are ‘less’ prone to crime. Which actually makes sense.

If someone’s going to go to the trouble of relocating across borders by extraordinary means, so they can make a better life, they’re not likely to jeopardize their whole effort for garden-variety crimes. Many, if not most of these people, are sending money home to needy families. That export of currency is not necessarily good for our economy, but again, the average migrant does not want to jeopardize their reason for being here.

So the truth is Alan, you are just being a reactionary Trumper by falsely labeling Anon as wrong on this subject. ‘You’ are wrong, Alan. And, as usual, you have no links to support your contentions.

            https://www.cato.org/blog/illegal-immigrants-crime-assessing-evidence

            1. Cato is a font of opinion journalism. Their point men on this issue have been Alex Nowasteh and Michaelangelo Landgrave, neither of whom are in a position to produce and publish original research in this matter.

              1. “This is absurd x XI says: August 14, 2019 at 12:41 PM
Cato is a font of opinion journalism. Their point men on this issue have been Alex Nowasteh and Michaelangelo Landgrave, neither of whom are in a position to produce and publish original research in this matter.”

                Arm-chair critics abound.

            2. Peter, what you are reporting is an op-ed from Cato that is the strong supporter of immigration and perhaps open borders. This opinion is negated by actual numbers. You aren’t interested in the truth rather someone that will tell you what you want to hear. In addition to the 30% prisoner rate the second an alien crosses our borders without official permission that person is a criminal and is knowingly violating out laws.

              From the Washington Times
30 percent of federal prisoners are immigrants, DOJ/DHS reports

Immigrants accounted for more than 30 percent of the federal prison population and nearly all of them are confirmed or suspected illegal immigrants, the government said in a new report Tuesday.

              1. Undocumented’s may in fact constitute a large ratio of Federal prisoners. Most these prisoners are probably members of street gangs and cartels.

But when one considers the Undocumented population in this country is about the size of Illinois (about 13 million), those Federal prisoners becomes a fairly small ratio of the larger illegal population.

And if one seeks to assert that Illegal Immigrants number over 20 million, as many conservatives claim, then the ratio of Undocumented criminals becomes increasingly smaller.

                1. “Undocumented’s may in fact constitute a large ratio of Federal prisoners. Most these prisoners are probably members of street gangs and cartels.”

                  That makes them criminals.

“But when one considers the Undocumented population in this country is about the size of Illinois (about 13 million), those Federal prisoners becomes a fairly small ratio of the larger illegal population.”

“a fairly small ratio of the larger illegal population”? If you run the ratios that means citizens in that criminal population are nearly non existent and the illegal criminal population is staggering.

                    1. There is nothing that was quoted here, but what good are links until you define what you call legitimate sources and provide us with their names. You have been asked many times and anything that conflicts with your visions is simply labelled illegitimate. In any event I posted an entire article and I think anonymous let you know where it was from. What I find amazing is how easily anonymous can locate these things but you are entirely stumped.

              1. Regarding Above:

If one accepts that Undocumented Immigrants number about 13 million, as the U.S. Census Bureau estimates, 11% born in Mexico would be a fairly large ratio to wind up in U.S. Federal Prisons.

But what percentage of those Federal Prisoners were in the U.S. full-time pursuing ordinary jobs? Many may have slipped across the border to commit crimes with no intention of settling here and, or, no intention of pursuing honest work.

Yet if one accepts conservative claims the the ‘Illegal Population’ is over 20 million, than those foreign-born Federal Prisoners become a smaller share of a larger population.

              2. Peter, the Census Bureau estimates that non-citizens account for 7% of the population in total. The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates non-citizens account for 7.6% of those currently to be found in state and federal prisons. Those are the ones who weren’t deported. Hispanics account for 17.6% of the general population and 23% of the prison census. Note that 52% of the hispanic population was born abroad (some now citizens, some not).

              3. It seems there is definitional problem as to who is being counted that might be causing the difference in numbers, but using the numbers that 80% of federal prisoners are born here that leaves 20% that are not.

If that 20% is mostly illegal aliens then that is a huge number and agrees with the underlying premise.

However, we know 100% of illegal aliens have broken the law just by crossing the border. That makes 100% criminals without looking any further into their histories.

          3. How can anyone say that crime from illegals is less than crime from Americans?

They’re a Democratic Party mascot group, so their comparative virtue is a premise to the NPCs who post here. And if you dispute that, you’re a raaaaacist.

              1. he’s a punctilious curmudgeon for sure but not an idiot.

you’re not an idiot other, just annoying

            1. comparing the two populations crime rates can involve the simple slight of hand of discounting their initial crime: improper entry

if you don’t discount that initial crime, then illegals are per se at a 100% crime rate and there is quite simply, no comparison at all

of course the average illegal immigrant tries to lay low here. of course. some don’t but probably most do.

lay low as they evade taxes at a rate of about 90% too i bet and commit medicaid fraud on feckless states like new york and california who sign them up for free medical gleefully

  8. Keep in mind that what used to be called ‘the working press’ weren’t notable for specialized knowledge, but for being able to turn in copy on time with filler according to protocol. Some of them were capable autodidacts on their beat, some not. Broadcast journalists back in the day produced only modest quanta of editorial matter (the verbiage in an evening news broadcast ca. 1979 was about that of a single broadsheet in an ordinary font). The older generation among them commonly had some years in the working press under their belt. For the few on the anchor desk, their skills at self-presentation (rather than reporting) were crucial. One of the complaints about Jessica Savitch back in the day (from Tom Brokaw and David Brinkley) was that she knew how to present herself to the camera but did not know her beats.

So, here you have Chris Cuomo, a lapsed lawyer, whose continued employment is a function of his capacity for self-presentation. And here you have Chris Cuomo, the issue of private secondary school, Yale University, and Fordham’s law school, behaving like a drunken lout because he’s too much of a narcissist to take it in stride. These are our coastal elites, everyone. And they all vote Democratic nowadays. Wonderful world.

    1. DSS – Fredo Cuomo would not have a job if it were not for his brother.

      1. He has a law degree, earned when his brother was a subcabinet official of the Clinton Administration. He’d likely be working somewhere, but not in broadcasting.

It’s amazing the number of scions who seem to be able to land plum jobs in the media or working for investment banks, previous experience and formal training be damned.

        1. these are sales jobs and sales can leverage social networks

that’s the simple logic of it

also when you are talking about investment banks, remember they help issue munincipal and other government bonds too

gotta lock up the existing base clientele as much as possible in any successful racket.
          i mean business.

        2. The media, by its embrace of those like Chris Cuomo with neither the training nor the inclination to report objectively on the news, has shown that Rolling Stone‘s Matt Taibbi is right – they don’t have the noble calling they claim for themselves, but are hucksters plying an entertainment trade, and that alone.

  9. Given that Cuomo is ranting about punching people and throwing them down the stairs – why aren’t we blaming him for mass shootings ?

Why is it that the only rhetoric that offends those on the left, or that those on the left think incites violence is that of others ?

    1. John Say – I think the President “red flagged” Fredo Cuomo for his violent statements.

      1. Under Red Flag laws as they currently stand, there’s abundant ground for Chris Cuomo to never be allowed to possess a firearm, just in that video.

    2. John, I’m just going to guess on this one, but we probably aren’t blaming Cuomo for mass shootings because no one claiming to be his big fan massacred 22 people while also claiming a goal Cuomo had espoused numerous times.

      You think?

  10. While I too lament the loss of civility.
And I would agree that the Cuomo Heckler is wrong.
Coumo’s response was out of line.

Further, Cuomo has not only used the Fredo term himself but as has been noted in the past day – it was all over the media before, including Cuomo’s show.

I have zero sympathy for Cuomo here. Just as I would have no sympathy for someone heckling Alex Jones.

It is wrong for us to harrass public figures in resturaunts.
AS has been done repeatedly to republicans, and was just done to Cuomo.

It is much worse to threaten violence.
And worse still to use your public platform on the news to publicly slur others.

I am not happy with Trump’s constant insults of others.
But Trump’s reputation is that he does not start fights, he finishes them.

I can tolerate Cuomo using his platform to slur the president,
    Trump does ask for it.
But Cuomo went far beyond that.
Cuomo is perfectly happy to slur any republican or trump supporter – whether they are a public figure or not.

It may be wrong for the Heckler to have called Cuomo Fredo,
but Cuomo asked for it, many times over.

    Cuomo’s appology is NOT sufficient.
He needs to clean up his act.

And we all need to start letting those we disagree with eat in peace.

    1. here is a book all the people who wring their hands over civlity should read

this is not a work of antisemitism. but it explores differences between different social groups in their perceptions of what is civil and what is not

while some antisemites are familiar with this work and quote it, i think just like “Genealogy of Morals” it reveals a certain admiration for the seriousness of Jewish people.

When America is “less civil” it reveals only that the conflicts are more serious. Civility itself is a form of manners. The dominant culture uses manners to lubricate away the conflicts that our system has exacerbated.

The endless thirst of capitalism for cheap labor is at least one half the demand side of the mass migration equation. That factor is usually in charge of greasing Republicans to look aside from the invasion. The other half is the thirst for cheaply earned, gullible voters, who always reliably flip the Dem lever. That’s their payoff.

The middle class of America has rebelled at the phenomenon,. and it will get more and more uncivil as the demand forces conspire to suppress the middle class rebellion against mass migration.
