As many of you know, I am a constant critic of the loss of civility in our society. For that reason, I was not critical of CNN host Chris Cuomo when he reacted angrily to a guy who went out of his way to insult Cuomo by calling him “Fredo,” a reference to the weak, older brother of Michael Corleone. After calling Cuomo “Fredo,” the man mocks him further by saying “I thought that was who you were.” Cuomo responds with profanity, which is captured on video and went viral. I am sympathetic to Cuomo when people believe that they have license to insult celebrities and suspend basic rules of civility just because someone is on television. It is particularly disturbing to have the President of the United States join in the mockery and lower his office to the level of a troll.
In the viral video Cuomo is captured slang “No, punk-ass b—-es from the right call me ‘Fredo.’ My name is Chris Cuomo. I’m an anchor on CNN,” Cuomo responded. “‘Fredo’ was from ‘The Godfather.’ He was a weak brother and they use that as an Italian slur — are any of you Italian?… It’s a f—ing insult to your people. It’s an insult to your f–kin’ people. It’s like the N-word for us. Is that a cool f—ing thing?”
First, two points of needed clarification. First, the analogy to The Godfather is misplaced. Fredo was the older brother of Michael and was upset for that reason in being “passed over” for head of the family after Sonny was killed. Chris Cuomo is the younger brother to Gov. Michael Cuomo. Moreover, being a CNN host is hardly an example of a failure. While Cuomo has garnered much opposition for his criticism of Trump on CNN, he remains a major media figure — hardly the sleazy sycophantic figure of Fredo.
Second, while Cuomo says that “Fredo” is the Italian version of the “n-word.” To answer his question to the heckler with the camera, I am Italian and it is not. (What is weird is that Cuomo himself once joked about being the Fredo of the family).
To his credit, Cuomo did apologize though the one most responsible in my view is the heckler: “Appreciate all the support but – truth is I should be better than the guys baiting me. This happens all the time these days. Often in front of my family. But there is a lesson: no need to add to the ugliness; I should be better than what I oppose.”
Trump however decided that it was appropriate for the President of the United States to come down in support of some bar troll who likes to insult celebrities. “I thought Chris was Fredo also. The truth hurts. Totally lost it! Low ratings @CNN.”
This tweet, like too many from the President, caters to the lowest common denominator in our society. It not only supports uncivil and rude conduct but actually joins in heaping insults on someone viewed as a critic. While many may enjoy this type of WWE banter, many of us do not. Many of us still respect the Office of the President as a symbol of our highest — not lowest — aspirations.
It definitely sounds like Mr. Turley is speaking from direct experience.

On that, CNN defends Chris Cuomo against charges of impropriety and Professor Turley, you’re oddly silent. Cuomo was clearly within his rights to exchange barbs with a heckler, but most on-air personalities at his pay grade wouldn’t have. But threatening to beat someone up and kick them down a set of stairs is far worse than anything President Trump did or said. Calling someone “Fredo” should have caused, at worst, a retort of “Cletus” (the slack jawed yokel from The Simpsons).
The footage shows Cuomo didn’t just lose it. He physically threatened the heckler. The new standard for liberal TV talent apparently includes actual violence (or has ABC fired Alec Baldwin for popping someone else on over a parking space?). But @POTUS never threatened anyone in his Tweets. He just sadistically hoisted Chris Cuomo on his own petard. Hardly a foul.

Mr. Turley, I am a big fan of yours and I try to read everything that you write. However, I disagree with you on the Cuomo reaction and the President’s tweet. Cuomo and the rest of the hosts at CNN and MSNBC have called the President a Nazi, a Putin puppet, a liar, a racist, just about every horrible insult they can pin on him and his family. I think the President deserves the right to respond in kind against these foul-mouthed thugs, who call themselves journalists, but are just a group of hacks who spew hate and disrespect towards our duly elected President. Anyone else see this statement as “civility for me but not for thee”? Why was Cuomo excused from the constraints of civility in his response. Because he was angry? I’ve always thought civility, at its best, was a two- way street and, at its worst, was used by the powerful as a tool to get the less powerful to just shut up. Cuomo’s “uncivil” punching down here seems to demonstrate the latter. There are bounds to what people should do in public to show displeasure. However, this heckler did nothing more than ask a pointed question and was met with something akin to ‘roid rage. So who really is the “uncivil” one?
One of Prof. Turley’s competetors in blawging is Ann Althouse. She has a tag ‘civility bullsh!t’, a phrase also favored by Glenn Reynolds. Whatever abstract value civility may have, it is seldom invoked in good faith in the culture in which we live.

Soooo… I take from this that words do matter? I think we, as a nation, need to come to a consensus on this because we’re all beginning to sound rather hypocritical.
Words matter when a former DA-turned-news-commentator makes a tweet that she then has to delete. Words matter when Dems call people racists with no proof other than their ‘feelings’ on the matter. Words matter when Mainstream Media spins information to make it appear more troubling or drastic.

30 percent of federal prisoners are immigrants, DOJ/DHS reports
Immigrants accounted for more than 30 percent of the federal prison population and nearly all of them are confirmed or suspected illegal immigrants, the government said in a new report Tuesday.
The government said it had 57,820 immigrants in its prisons as of Dec. 31, Homeland Security and the Justice Department said in the joint report.
Nearly 20,000 other immigrants were held in pretrial detention by the U.S. Marshals Service, most of them in contracted facilities, costing the government $134 million for just three months. That works out to nearly $90 a day for each person in those contract facilities.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said there shouldn’t be any illegal immigrants in prisons, because they shouldn’t have been in the country in the first place.
“Every crime committed by an illegal alien is, by definition, a crime that should have been prevented,” he said in releasing the report. “It is outrageous that tens of thousands of Americans are dying every year because of the drugs and violence brought over our borders illegally and that taxpayers have been forced, year after year, to pay millions of dollars to incarcerate tens of thousands of illegal aliens.”
President Trump last year ordered the Justice and Homeland Security departments to produce a regular count of immigrants in prisons to give taxpayers a sense for one of the costs the government bears.
The total federal prison population is about 185,000, so immigrants would account for about 31 percent. The vast majority are people who have been ordered to be deported, making them illegal immigrants once their sentences are completed. About 8 percent are illegal immigrants the government has asked a judge to order to be deported, and another 5 percent are legal immigrants whom the government is also trying to deport in light of their crimes.
A very small number — 169 — have been granted a specific protection and cannot be deported.
The numbers are from last year, or before the new zero tolerance policy the administration has adopted at the border. Under that policy, nearly every person who crosses the border illegally is being charged with a crime for illegal entry, a misdemeanor. If they’ve been deported before and try to sneak back, they’re charged with illegal re-entry, a felony.
Outside the prisons, the U.S. Marshals Service also held 19,688 confirmed immigrants as of Dec. 31, and another 3,022 whose status was still being investigated.
Those numbers could shoot up in future reports thanks to the zero tolerance policy, which is adding hundreds of immigrants a week to the court dockets in California, Arizona and Texas.
The report said 29 percent of the immigrants in federal prisons are serving immigration-related charges such as sneaking back in after being deported, or smuggling other illegal immigrants.
Nearly half of the migrants in federal custody were there for drug smuggling or dealing.
Sex offenders accounted for 2 percent. Fraudsters were 4 percent and another 4 percent were in for weapons offenses.
The report singled out some of those in federal custody, like Anibel Rondolpho Rodriguez, an MS-13 gang member who is serving a 45-year sentence after pleading guilty to gang-related involvement in two murders and two other attempted murders.
Two others singled out for mention were a man who had been in the U.S. legally and his partner in crime, an illegal immigrant, who were manufacturing homemade grenades. Some were sold in the U.S. while others were being shipped to Mexico. At the time of his arrest, the lead bombmaker was working to build a batch of 200 grenades, the government said.

Alan, here’s Koch Bros Cato Institute with a report on Undocumented Immigrants And Crime. I haven’t read the entire study. But the opening paragraphs strongly indicate that Undocumented Immigrants are ‘less’ prone to crime. Which actually makes sense.
If someone’s going to go to the trouble of relocating across borders by extraordinary means, so they can make a better life, they’re not likely to jeopardize their whole effort for garden-variety crimes. Many, if not most of these people, are sending money home to needy families. Peter, what you are reporting is an op-ed from Cato that is the strong supporter of immigration and perhaps open borders. This opinion is negated by actual numbers. But what percentage of those Federal Prisoners were in the U.S. full-time pursuing ordinary jobs? Many may have slipped across the border to commit crimes with no intention of settling here and, or, no intention of pursuing honest work.
Yet if one accepts conservative claims the the ‘Illegal Population’ is over 20 million, than those foreign-born Federal Prisoners become a smaller share of a larger population.
Peter, the Census Bureau estimates that non-citizens account for 7% of the population in total. The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates non-citizens account for 7.6% of those currently to be found in state and federal prisons. Those are the ones who weren’t deported. Hispanics account for 17.6% of the general population and 23% of the prison census. Note that 52% of the hispanic population was born abroad (some now citizens, some not).
It seems there is definitional problem as to who is being counted that might be causing the difference in numbers, but using the numbers that 80% of federal prisoners are born here that leaves 20% that are not.
If that 20% is mostly illegal aliens then that is a huge number and agrees with the underlying premise.
However, we know 100% of illegal aliens have broken the law just by crossing the border. That makes 100% criminals without looking any further into their histories.

Keep in mind that what used to be called ‘the working press’ weren’t notable for specialized knowledge, but for being able to turn in copy on time with filler according to protocol. Some of them were capable autodidacts on their beat, some not. Broadcast journalists back in the day produced only modest quanta of editorial matter (the verbiage in an evening news broadcast ca. 1979 was about that of a single broadsheet in an ordinary font). The older generation among them commonly had some years in the working press under their belt. For the few on the anchor desk, their skills at self-presentation (rather than reporting) were crucial. It may be wrong for the Heckler to have called Cuomo Fredo,
but Cuomo asked for it, many times over.
Cuomo’s appology is NOT sufficient.
He needs to clean up his act.
And we all need to start letting those we disagree with eat in peace.

this is not a work of antisemitism. but it explores differences between different social groups in their perceptions of what is civil and what is not
while some antisemites are familiar with this work and quote it, i think just like “Genealogy of Morals” it reveals a certain admiration for the seriousness of Jewish people.
When America is “less civil” it reveals only that the conflicts are more serious. Civility itself is a form of manners. The dominant culture uses manners to lubricate away the conflicts that our system has exacerbated.
The endless thirst of capitalism for cheap labor is at least one half the demand side of the mass migration equation. That factor is usually in charge of greasing Republicans to look aside from the invasion. The other half is the thirst for cheaply earned, gullible voters, who always reliably flip the Dem lever. That’s their payoff.
The middle class of America has rebelled at the phenomenon,. and it will get more and more uncivil as the demand forces conspire to suppress the middle class rebellion against mass migration.
