Trump Cancels Denmark Visit After Prime Minister Rejects His Offer To Buy Greenland

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen would be justified to be a tad confused. An official visit was planned to Denmark with President Donald Trump who made headlines by suddenly saying that he might buy Greenland. The response from Denmark was as predictable as if Frederiksen suddenly announced an interest in buying Rhode Island. She declined the offer. The response from Trump was to cancel the visit since they will not sell him part of their country. Trump later added insult to injury by calling Frederiksen “nasty” and “not very nice” in swatting back a sudden public offer to buy a huge amount of territory from Denmark.

I have no problem with a president exploring a purchase of an area like Greenland (which has been tried before), but it is done not on twitter or a presser. It is done through back channels to explore any interest. There is no interest. The public declaration from Trump however compelled the Prime Minister to state that the proposal was viewed as “absurd.”

Trump responded by saying that the refusing to sell off part of their lands made a meeting unnecessary despite Denmark being a long-standing ally. Trump simply stated “based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greeland, I will be postponing our meeting schedule in two weeks for another time …”

This is all embarrassing for the United States. If we were setting up the meeting solely to discuss the purpose of a large amount of Denmark’s territory, it should have been vetted before in private. We cannot run a major nation through Twitter and oft-hand comments.

This is a NATO ally which was preparing for an official visit of the President of the United States “to celebrate Denmark’s close relationship to the US”. . First it must deal with a sudden offer to buy part of their territory and then a brush off because they refused to do so. This type of conduct is destroying our standing with the world.

Former foreign minister Kristian Jensen put it simply in describing the “total chaos” caused by Trump’s statements: “It has gone from a great opportunity for enhanced dialogue between allies to a diplomatic crisis.”

  2. What a stupid terrible mistake for the Danes to be so blunt. Imagine the possibilities for the Danes to strike some business deals with the Americans. Open the trade up to a market of 350 million rich Americans? I think it would have somehow paid the Danes to at least be polite. The chance to impact the Americans with some Denmark culture – lost!

    PS Karen, the winner take all state contests – all but Maine and Nebraska – is not in the constitution and was not how any were originally run. If EC were proportional to the states vote, Hillary would be president – she won the vote by a margin greater than 11 previous presidents. Also, the constitution does mention counties, acres, or cows and the current system has candidates avoiding all but 10-12 states. Your argument is BS.

    1. If all states awarded Electoral College votes proportionately, the 2016 election would probably have been decided in the House of Representatives.
      Because both Trump and Clinton would have fallen short of the required 270 votes. The GOP House would have elected Trump.
      And we’d still have the same continuous whining from the Hillary supporters years later.

      That big swath of red represents all the parts of America who rejected Hillary Clinton. Your plan would empower a very small area of the United States into king/queen makers, and render the rest of the country powerless. That would also make them irrelevant to all future Presidents. What do you imagine would be the fate of those states when they have nothing to do with electing the President of the United States? What would the effect be on Congress and the House, once those states became politically irrelevant?

    With the whir of a helicopter engine in the background, President Trump veered from topic to topic with utter confidence, alarming ignorance, minimal coherence and relentless duplicity.

    President Vladimir Putin, he said, “made a living on outsmarting President Obama” — even though it is Trump who now urges a Russian return to the Group of Seven summit without any concessions on Putin’s part.

    On pursuing the trade war with China, Trump called himself the “chosen one.” This came within hours of tweeting a quote that he is loved like “the second coming of God.” At some point, arrogance is so extreme and delusional that it can only be expressed in blasphemy.

    Trump accused the Danish prime minister of “blowing off the United States” because she scorned his own balmy, offensive musings on the future of Greenland. “We treat countries with respect,” he said — except, presumably, the “shithole” ones.

    Trump’s new immigration rule, he claimed, would “do even more” to bring migrant families together — though this togetherness, he failed to mention, would come by allowing the indefinite detention of migrant families.

    “I am the least racist person ever to serve in office,” said the man who is increasingly bold in his use of racist tropes.

    He joked again about being in office 10 or 14 years from now — appealing to people who find overturning the constitutional order a laugh riot.

    “Mental health,” Trump went on. “Very important.” Hard to argue with that one.

    “Our Second Amendment will remain strong,” Trump promised, while previewing an effort to overturn that portion of the 14th Amendment guaranteeing birthright citizenship. Some parts of the Constitution, clearly, are more constitutional than others.

    Trump pledged the return of thousands of captured Islamic State fighters to Europe, one way or another. “If Europe doesn’t take them, I’ll have no choice but to release them in the countries from which they came, which is Germany, France and other places.” Did the president of the United States just threaten to release dangerous terrorists on the streets of our closest allies? Evidently.

    Of the wounded and grieving families Trump visited following recent mass shootings: “The love for me,” he boasted, “and my love for them was unparalleled.” And this was demonstrated by “hundreds and hundreds of people all over the floor.” No one draws a bigger crowd in an intensive care unit.

    After repeating an anti-Semitic trope about the disloyalty of Jews who vote Democratic, Trump insisted to a reporter, “It’s only anti-Semitic in your head.” But control over the plain meaning of English words is not a presidential power. And the charge of disloyalty is the essence of anti-Semitism.

    Seldom in presidential history has more nonsense been expressed with greater concision. Never would the interests of the United States have been better served by a louder helicopter.

    Barack and Michelle Obama are buying a $15M estate in Martha’s Vineyard

    TMZ reports that the former president and first lady are in escrow — aka in contract to purchase — a 29-acre beachfront plot with a 6,892-square-foot main house. The Obamas were initially just renting the seven-bedroom, 8½-bathroom spread for summer 2019, but apparently loved it so much that they made an offer.

    It was most recently on the market asking $14.85 million, but the Obamas are apparently paying less.

    The property at 79 Turkeyland Cove Road in Edgartown, Mass. — owned by Boston Celtics chief Wyc Grousbeck — has a living room with vaulted ceilings and a stone fireplace, a chef’s kitchen and a formal dining room with giant windows, according to the property’s Realtor.com listing.

    The Obamas will bunk in the master suite, which has a fireplace and private sun deck.

    Outside, there’s a pool with another fireplace — or the couple could swim on the private beach, which has a boathouse.

    “It’s not a done deal just yet,” TMZ says. “We’re told there are contingencies so it’s possible it could fall apart, but we’re told so far it’s a go.”

    Grousbeck initially put the palatial property on the market in 2015 for $22.5 million.

    In 2017, the Obamas dropped $8.1 million on a nine-bedroom house in the Washington, DC, neighborhood of Kalorama.

    There’s plenty more where that came from. As of 2018, Barack Obama’s net worth was about $40 million, from projects like speaking engagements and books as well as the six-figure pension granted to all past presidents, according to a GoBankingRates calculation.

    But given Michelle Obama’s bestselling hit “Becoming” — and the lucrative book tour that accompanied it — it’s estimated the couple is actually worth more than $135 million. (Their production deal with Netflix to produce films, announced in May, is another boon to the coffers.)

    Aug. 16, 8:09AM: The Wall Street Journal reported that the president had been floating the idea of purchasing Greenland — which was never listed for sale — to advisors for months. Current and former White House officials observed in the article that adding Greenland to U.S. territory would be tantamount to Andrew Jackson’s acquisition of Alaska for Trump; the idea also aligns with the Pentagon’s recent efforts to block China from building airports on the island.

    August 19: “Greenland is not for sale,” Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen told a Danish newspaper earlier this week. “Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously.”

    Aug. 19, 8:07 p.m.: Trump shared a photo of a giant golden Trump-branded tower plopped on a rocky shoreline along with the text “I promise not to do this to Greenland!” At that time, the visit was still on.

    Aug. 20: On Tuesday evening, White House spokesman Judd Deere confirmed that Trump would no longer be traveling to Denmark.

    Aug. 20, 7:51 p.m.: Trump announced via Twitter that he had cancelled an upcoming trip to Copenhagen, where he had been invited by Queen Margrethe II, following Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen’s statement that there was “no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland.”

    Aug. 21, 1:24 PM: Before departing on a trip to Kentucky, Trump told reporters outside the White House that Fredriksen was “nasty” in her comments about not selling Greenland. “I thought it was not a very nice was of saying something. But all they had to do is say, no, we’d rather not do that or we’d rather not talk about that.” He added that the slight was to America, not him personally.

    Aug. 21, 2:10 p.m.: As of the time of this posting, Greenland is still not for sale.

      It appears that Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen initially thought the Greenland purchase was a rumor and not a serious proposal. In fact, a recent theory suggests that life on Earth might have started in the boiling water near a volcanic vent. Perhaps. The existence of extremophiles makes the possibility of extraterrestrial life more likely.

    Greenland seems nearly devoid of life, outside the hardy souls that call it home, but underneath the ice is a surprising variety of sea life.
