“Don’t Do It”: Author Calls For People To Stop Wearing Red Hats To Avoid Traumatizing The “Disenfranchised”

Author, Rebecca Makkai, 41, is calling for people to stop wearing red hats. Any red hats. The reason is that she believes that “disenchanchised” people are being traumatized by the color due to its use in Make American Great Again (MAGA) hats. At first I thought that this was another example of derangement in the Trump era, but, as a fellow Chicagoan, I am just assuming that Makkai has found clever way to dissuade people from wearing hats for the Cincinnati Reds and the Nats.

Makkai is a celebrated author and a Pulitzer finalist. She called on “normal people” to stop wearing all red hats, even those who are protesting Trump: “for the love of God: The clever folks wearing “Make America Read Again” or whatever caps — NO. You’re making everyone scared. Don’t do it.” She explained further that it is “Not worth making disenfranchised people feel unsafe.”

This could be a rough transition for everyone from Maoists to Catholic cardinals. Yet, that is apparently easier than dealing with colors as neutral elements used in all forms of art and expression.

  1. OT — sort of…

The good professor used to care about these things:

“Victory Over ‘Civil Liberties Train Wreck’ as Federal Judge Rules US Terror Watchlist Unconstitutional”

‘After years of abuse and secrecy, court’s decision seen by rights advocates as very welcome but “long overdue”‘

  2. America is in a state of hysteria, incoherence, chaos and anarchy. A new bit of madness is proposed and imposed every day. Women have abortions and break “glass ceilings” after they stopped having babies and replacing Americans – the American fertility rate is in a “death spiral.” Where’s the future in that? Next the women and their pu–ywhipped allies complain about deaths from cars, e-cigarettes, opioids, guns, etc. – what, abortion good, everything else bad??? Then foreign invader hyphenates pour over the border and demand trillions in Uniform Basic Income and Medicare for All, Reparations and every other form of “free stuff.” Who cares it’s just the white man’s money and in 100 years, there won’t be an American left in America. The hyphenate invaders say, “Let’s get this party started.” He–s yes!

The inmates have taken over the asylum.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”

  3. People who are traumatized by Republican apparel should seek immediate psychiatric medical attention.

  4. Liberals talk like the population is chock-a-block with very loosely-wired people with no composure whatsoever. Projection anyone?

    1. I am compelled to acknowledge that I have attended the annual Red Mass on more than one occasion.

  5. I am woman hear me whine..wow has my gender gone idiot or what. Now the color you wear is suspect in your intent upon society? You know they need more rocks and boulders to build up the shoreline along the coast…maybe these whiners could donate their bodies to this cause. It’s very clear their minds and morals have already left the building. Say hi to Elvis as you leave would ya?

    1. Please stop with the gender bashing even though you say it’s yours. This is a nut cake. As your comment about minds and moral leaving the building, I think that applies to the entirety of the Trump Administration, male and female.

So in your twisted logic, Mairbair is gender bashing but you’re not bashing anything. I believe this article was written for you and those that support your rhetoric.

The very ideologues who claim that we need to be kind to one another are not inclined to be kind to their political opponents—for with them, compassion is merely rhetorical.

        1. I didn’t say anything about what I was doing but as far as I know making a comment about the Trump Administration is not bashing a protected group. Paining an entire gender with the same brush is gender bashing. My comments were all inclusive and based on reported facts.

      2. as we know from your leftist friends, “gender is socially constructed” ie anybody can say they are a girl now. so justice holmes please take that under advisement next time before you launch such a microagression on a commenter you believe is a transperson thank you “sir/madam”

      1. Thanks Cindy…I going to assume j. Holmes resides on the left side of the tree…just guessing!

        1. Cindy, so you have “gone idiot or what”? Interesting view of yourself. As for me, I’m sure that you are not an idiot even though Mairbair thinks all women are.

          1. Justice Holmes,
Hmmm…. where to begin? First, ” I’m a girl and by me that ‘s only great” is the opening line in the iconic song “I Enjoy Being a Girl” from the hit 50 yr old musical “Flower Drum Song”.
I was attempting to make what we call here in Texas a clever reference.
Having been associated with American feminists all these years, I can now honestly pronounce feminism in America as
            without a pulse. Dead.
MairBair is correct. Women, esp women leaders,(not all but too many) have gone full idiot on us. The 2017 Women’s March on DC was a joke! The architects of that march EXCLUDED Hillary Clinton from the select group of 28 women in whose honor they were marching! Hate her or love her, she was the first woman to receive a presidential nomination of a major political party! For whom they had voted, supposedly. And her name was nowhere on the program….She was old and white, ya know.
What idiots! Then, to prove they’re serious intellectual females, they wore genitalia hats, laughing and giggling their little hearts out. I’m sure they all went back to Linda Sarsour’s house for a slumber party and tickle fight.

  6. Liberals/leftists/progressives will soon demand that all men, women and children wear the baggy, dull colored Mao suits. Oppressed people will no longer be sad inside.

      1. What fittings? You don’t need no stinking fittings when all you’re gonna wear is a One-Size-Fits-All bag. No individualized clothing! Fittings are anti-collectivist. 😉

        1. LOL, Prairie Rose! I’m going with my personal favorite name for them: Daily Worker Chic
Am applying for a trademark soon….LOL
          Good to see you.

    1. Oppressed people will no longer be sad inside.

If they are triggered by red hats, this selfie culture is going to go into a full-blown meltdown when their socialist fantasy meets reality.

  7. Let’s see now, they weren’t traumatized after the Mueller report; crickets after IG report on Comey dropped; my guess is once the Durham and Huber reports drop and the full details become public about how close our intel/FBI community came to taking down a duly elected President, they’ll still be whining about a red hat.

Scared of a red hat but not of a two-tiered justice system? Disenfranchised? You’ve earned it. Seek mental health.

  8. Pity that “celebrated author and Pulitzer finalist” wouldn’t use some her talent to be more specific about which group was being “disenfranchised”. But let me guess, it’s all those left-leaning, snowflake, Democrats that today yell, scream, kick, throw temper tantrums and tell outrageous lies trying to get exactly what they want. Too bad for all those females who are members of the Red Hat Society. D’ya think they give a damn about this ridiculous group of nincompoops?!?

  9. Some of us are stil dealing with the decades-old “No white, no patent leather after Labor Dsy”.
My god, if Trump violates THAT edict, then brace yourselves for the impeachment juggernaut.

  10. I have my maroon and gold ASU hat. Does that count? Football season has started and there is no way I am not wearing my ASU hat. She can pry it from my cold, dead fingers. Molon labe.

      1. Cindy Bragg – NAU are the Lumberjacks. They bought (were given) one of those Muffler Men and put an axe where the muffler was. Their colors are either blue and gold or blue and white. They are not in our conference so we only play them as a tune-up team.

        1. Paul C…….but what if everybody wanted to put an axe where their muffler is? What kind of world would it be then?🤣
Seriously, NASU’s campus is beautiful…..especially that old wooden main house.. And Flagstaff is such a great little town…or used to be. Thanks for the info. Go LumberJ’s!!

          1. Cindy Bragg – the Arizona Cardinals train at NAU during the late summer.

As for the Muffler Men, there used to be a site that had pictures of all the different Muffler Men. It was really fascinating to see what they had been changed into.

    1. Paul, they might worry about your hat but are they smart enough to know that the red flag is the political symbol of socialism, communism and Marxism?

      1. but are they smart enough to know that the red flag is the political symbol of socialism, communism and Marxism?

Is this the true origin of the term red flag law?

In politics, if we know a proposal doesn’t serve its advertised purpose, then the advertised purpose usually is not the real one. In this case, the dominant motive seems to be to take guns away from people, despite the undeniable role of firearms in self-defense and crime prevention.

Ironically, by adopting the term “red flag law,” promoters inadvertently admitted their real motive is not safety. This is because the phrase “red flag law” has been proverbial for an enactment masquerading as a safety measure but really passed for more sinister reasons.
        https://tenthamendmentcenter.com/2019/08/31/the-historical-use-of-red-flag-laws/

        1. if someone really is a threat to the safety of themselves or others, they can already be a petition in court to lock the person up in a facility under involuntary commitment laws in every state, and pretty quickly. Provided there is competent evidence to meet the standards. That is usually the hard part. Anyways, I am not clear on what Red Flag Laws presume to add to that equation.

The American Left has historically over the past 60 years or so of letting loose people who are shiz etc as “NOT REALLY a threat to themselves or others” in their opinions and making the involuntary committment process harder. I am not clear on whether or not they have some different set of standards in mind for gun ownership. One suspects, they probably do.

Like, if you are a Republican who wears a MAGA hat, then you are a threat, perhaps? A sliding scale maybe, where a drooling, muttering, homeless man walking around exposing himself in public “peacefully” is not considered a threat in need of confinement, but being an overly patriotic redneck is grounds for denial of gun rights.

          1. Well as Biden said recently, Everybody knows who Donald Trump is. Even his supporters know who he is. We got to let him know who we are. We choose unity over division. We choose science over fiction. We choose truth over facts.

That’s what is called a Kinsley Gaffe.

A mistake whereby a politician inadvertently says something truthful which they had not meant to reveal.

  11. “Makkai is a celebrated author and a Pulitzer finalist.”

So are the Nyt, WaPo, New Yorker, Huffy post, et al

  12. If I had a red hat, I’d immediately and constantly wear it! Hmmm! May have to go out and purchase one! People have gone absolutely nuts!!

    1. I’m neither a Trump supporter nor a baseball cap-wearing person, but I am tempted to get a MAGA hat just to irritate people like Makkai.
