University of Washington Professor Denounces SpongeBob SquarePants As Violent Colonialist and Cultural Appropriator

University of Washington Professor Holly M. Barker has published an article “Unsettling SpongeBob and the Legacies of Violence on Bikini Bottom” that seeks to strip away the true meaning of SpongeBob SquarePants as a colonizing, violent cultural appropriator. Moreover, the cartoon is deemed as “whitewashing of violent American military activities” against natives of the Pacific.” What is most remarkable however is that she appears to be serious.

The article entitled “The Contemporary Pacific: A Journal of Island Affairs,” declares that the cartoon works for “normalizing the settler colonial takings of indigenous lands while erasing the ancestral Bikinian people from their nonfictional homeland.” The “violent” and “racist” undertones are not missed by Professor Marker.

Barker cannot get beyond the location being the place of one of the atomic bomb tests and SpongeBob seems to telegraph “not caring about the detonation of nuclear bombs” while culturally appropriating the Pacific culture by wearing Hawaiian shirt and showing pineapples and tikis.

Barker is a sociological anthropologist who earned her Ph.D., Anthropology, from American University, in 2000.

  1. Neurotic people have made an industry out of victim profiteering. They hold positions of authority in universities. This kind of screed gets published.

Professor Barker’s hysteria is an apt commentary on the Leftist politicization of universities. They are no longer serious institutions of higher learning. Leftist politics have infested them. They must be rooted out.

And she’s another example of the poor reputation of soft sciences, like anthropology. The quality of the field has declined rapidly.

  2. Well, this kook deserves an Irish Poem! One for writing stupid stuff, and Two, for missing the real horror of the Sponge Bob Universe!

  4. Excerpt from the link:

    Abstract:

Billions of people around the globe are well-acquainted with SpongeBob Squarepants and the antics of the title character and his friends on Bikini Bottom. By the same token, there is an absence of public discourse about the whitewashing of violent American military activities through SpongeBob’s occupation and reclaiming of the bottom of Bikini Atoll’s lagoon. SpongeBob Squarepants and his friends play a role in normalizing the settler colonial takings of Indigenous lands while erasing the ancestral Bikinian people from their nonfictional homeland. This article exposes the complicity of popular culture in maintaining American military hegemonies in Oceania while amplifying the enduring indigeneity (Kauanui 2016) of the Marshallese people, who maintain deeply spiritual and historical connections to land—even land they cannot occupy due to residual radiation contamination from US nuclear weapons testing—through a range of cultural practices, including language, song, and weaving. This article also considers the gendered violence of nuclear colonialism and the resilience of Marshallese women.

It seems that Random Bullshit Generators on the internet have advanced to their zenith–they are now able to draft academic papers.

  5. She is dead serious. She is a Commissioner for the Marshall Islands. What she fails to realize is that the sea creatures were there before humans and it is f**king cartoon that nobody takes seriously.

    1. She is also one of the reasons the UDUBYA Students come our with social promotions and ratings even less than the football team.

    2. I thought SpongeBob was a euphemism for a Tampon, and they work at the Krusty Krab, on Bikini Bottom.

      That’s what I read…

      1. Wally World – I have a Spongebob tie that I wore when I was teaching. Have you ever watched the show? It is pretty silly.

        1. I’ve seen Sponge Bob, utterly ridiculous cartoon. Not sure why anyone would waste their time writing a paper about it. Can I have her job, btw? I could write a paper a day about cartoons. With citations and all. 10 to 15 pages max per day. I do n33d some rest.

  6. Another piece of evidence that the board of an intelligently run institution would do the following in year one: cleave the sociology and anthropology departments into four: social survey research, physical anthropology, social theory, and cultural anthropology / sociological ethnography. In year two, the board shuts down the latter two departments and puts their entire faculty out on the curb.

  7. In only seven sentences, you referred to this academic screwball as “Barker”, Marker” and “Market”. Your proofreading skills are almost as unimpressive as her analytical skills.

  8. The left better he careful about besmirching SpongeBob.
Right now he is the only well known Democrat left they can run who has half a chance of defeating Trump. Now, if they can only figure out how to handle that little problem of his Hatch Certificate.

    1. The only competition that Pelosi has. I see that some idiot is still claiming that if Trump and Pence were to vacate she would be an automatic President. Goes to show what a snowflake U non education can do the illiterates of the country.

  9. The left’s agendas must be continually fueled by a constant stream of new grievances. It now appears that there are few depths that they will not plumb to keep the accusations and claims of victimhood alive and flowing. This new person should be no where near the education industry nor should her wild claims be validated by any association with an educational institution.

    1. To be honest both sides are horrible both do the same thing bitch about the other sides actions while ignoring said actions if its someone on there side with power.

iv been watching both sides for awhile now and both are just so terrible in there own way.
