Gallup: Trump’s Support Unchanged By Impeachment Hearings

A new Gallup poll shows that, despite damaging testimony on the Ukrainian controversy, President Donald Trump’s popularity has not fallen and his support among Republicans remains extraordinarily high. The President has held steady at 43 percent popularity overall and an astronomical 90 percent among Republicans. In addition, a Marquette Poll in the critical state of Wisconsin shows support for impeachment falling, not rising among voters. Indeed, Trump is now beating potential Democratic rivals.

I have written that the effort to reframe the impeachment as a bribery case may reflect the failure of the abuse of power theory to generate much support. The needle is simply not moving. The danger is that the hearings are playing mainly to an audience that is already firm in their views and not penetrating with most voters. It is not that the hearing are playing to an empty house as much as the hearings are playing to an audience that only hears the lines that they came to hear.

This would be the narrowest impeachment in history. Many voters are likely skeptical about removing a president on a controversy over aid that was ultimately paid to Ukraine. More importantly, the Democrats are insisting on a vote by the end of December. That means this will be the thinnest evidentiary record in history. A successful impeachment requires a degree of maturation and saturation to allow the public opinion to move. That will not happen in the rush to a vote in the House on this very narrow ground for impeachment.

  1. Bear in mind that Donald Trump is getting his investigations, at least when it comes to the Bidens. Ukraine has announced that Burisma is under investigation, which means the Biden’s role will be investigated. I suspect the FBI is also investigating them.

  2. The Ukraine hoax looks like the Russian hoax, the Mueller hoax, the obstruction hoax, the Jesse Smollett hoax, the stormy Daniels hoax, Blazy Ford hoax, Charlotte “fine people“ hoax and the Kavanaugh hoax part two because they are all the same HOAX by the same Democrat HOAXERS!

    @Lrihendry

    1. Curious did you not watch Fiona hill. She stated well the following: 1. Russian interference happened and then she tore apart those calling it a hoax .2. She then went into to dismantle the Ukraine conspiracy – as a hoax pushed by the gop which is a Russian talking point.
      3. Lastly she affirmed that trump did seek to dig up dirt on a political rival not for the good of the USA but for his personal interests. Do you dispute any of her talking points?? Curious

  3. If Trump’s support is unchanged during the impeachment proceedings, it means that Democrats are still at reverse polarity in spite of the revelation that the impeachment allegations against him were false, just like all the previous ones were.

  4. Having seen nothing damaging or relevant I did notice the left is taking a beating in the media which does not include the left stream lame stream propagandists. So we wait patiently for the usual round of mechanical in personators of humans and their programmers aka The Collective to respond and wonder what are they going to come up with next to bore the nation.

  5. Why does every Turley report begin with an attempted smear of conservatives and the President? Where is the damaging testimony? In the phone call, that Democrats were too afraid to read aloud so Shiff concocted his imaginary, fake call?

Why would it be damaging that President Trump is concerned with political corruption and cronyism by American Democrats? Why would it be damaging that President Trump is concerned about foreign interference in our elections? I am concerned about corruption and cronyism. I am concerned about foreign interference into our elections even if Democrats are not. And since Dems are the ones who invited Mr. Steele and Fusion GPS into our election, the ones who colluded with Ukrainians to find dirt on Republicans, and then have corruptly lined their pockets (see our new rich Democrats – Obama, Clinton, Bidens), OF COURSE, intelligent Americans realize the smear campaign the Dems have waged and we will not be played by the Dem’s corruption.

  6. A new Gallup poll shows that, despite damaging testimony…

Huh? That’s an interesting opening sentence for a post that proceeds to describe how the testimony has not been damaging. Did you believe you were addressing the Jonathan Gruber crowd?

  7. On the Democrats: “Trump’s stupidity and general awfulness aren’t enough to get a Democrat elected in 2020. Only policy positions that result in positive change for people’s lives will bring about that result but that is exactly what Democrats refuse to do. They are hoping that Ukrainegate will succeed where Russiagate failed and they can win the presidency without helping their voters.”

  8. What damning testimony? Where? Point it out. So far all I see is the Democrats getting their a$$es handed to them. And this is using THEIR witnesses.

BTW, polls show Trump beating all four Democratic front-runners in Wisconsin, This is a repeat of Clinton, the longer it goes on, the higher Trump’s numbers will be by the end.

  9. The polls regarding impeachment are moving in Trump’s favor. The Morning Consult poll shows a large drop in support for the inquiry.

“The Nov. 15-17 survey found that 48 percent of voters support the inquiry and 45 percent oppose it, a net drop of 5 percentage points since a Nov. 8-10 poll. At the same time, views about how Democrats are handling the inquiry — which is probing Trump’s alleged pressure on Ukraine to investigate his political rivals in exchange for U.S. security assistance — were statistically unchanged, with 42 percent approving and 46 percent disapproving.”

And in real poll news, Trump’s approval stands at 48% in the most accurate poll of the 2016 election.

  11. ” despite damaging testimony on the Ukrainian controversy, ”
Perhaps the gist of this is that most rational Americans realize that the partisan press coverage of this impeachment circus is not damaging even though the press wants us to believe so. The days of the MSM managing our thoughts are over except for those on the left who need to hear what they want to hear – which is rarely the truth.

    1. Yeah, I’m surprised that a highly educated person such as Professor Turley finds any of the testimony “damaging” to President Trump. Literally NONE of it has been damaging to him.
But I guess if Turley posts it often enough, in his mind it becomes true.

  12. Thank you, Professor, for this happy news.
Citizens who respect their President, and the office he holds, and who continue to stand firmly against a fierce, intimidating juggernaut of deceit and hatred, are hoping to save our beloved country.

  13. In truth, the sampling frames for these polls are so wretched that they aren’t accurate enough to tell us anything. The needle just doesn’t move much in the public at large. Trump detractors want him out and they aren’t scrupulous about locating a valid reason for it, and their assessment of the hearings is ruined by confirmation bias. Trump supporters know it’s all hooey and don’t care about the precise content of the hooey.

  14. The Democrats fail to understand than west of Loundon and east of Marin counties no one cares about some messy foreign aid deal. The ‘Silent Majority’ sees a new car in the driveway, bills paid, kids in college, illegals returned from whence they arrived- Ukraine? He said, she said? Trump places the United States first, so they believe, and he makes hard and difficult choices. Better him than somebody who wants to end their company health insurance, or opens the doors to terrorists and rapists.

Unless the economy crashes, Trump will receive 400 electoral votes in 2020 and a surprise blue state or two.

    1. Unless the economy crashes, Trump will receive 400 electoral votes in 2020 and a surprise blue state or two.

Doubt that, but street-level Democrats are fanatics about this and they’re not going to get what they want, which is Trump disgraced by legal process. They have to have an election, which bothers them because he might actually win it and, at some level, they’d have to respect the result. Their other problem is that three of their preferred candidates are gargoyles who will have at least as much trouble as the President closing the deal with swing voters and their fourth is a complete wild card.

  15. “Reframe”? Sonderland provided the evidence for a charge based on bribery. Should that evidence be ignored?

    1. He ‘provided the evidence’ in your imagination only. He didn’t describe anything of which he had first hand knowledge and what he did describe wouldn’t count as bribery even if he did have first-hand knowledge.

    2. Sondland admitted no one on Planet Earth told him the aid was tied to any investigation. He just assumed it was, but literally no one ever told him it was. In fact, Ukraine was totally unaware of the allegation until Politico wrote about it, months and multiple meetings later.

      Watch his admission, below.

  16. Damaging testimony?? Did you see Sondland’s testimony when he was questioned by Representatives Jordan and Turner?
