“Agitated Passions”: A Response To Chairman Nadler Et Al.

In the wake of yesterday’s hearing, my office and home have been inundated with threats from people irate over the fact that I would question the sufficiency of this record for impeachment. There has also been a couple of facially false narratives that have been aired and are being widely disseminated without any apparent fact checking or analysis. I have addressed one historical point separately. In recognition of Sen. Pat Moynihan’s view that “everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts,” I have published a column on these attacks: Hill Column

It is an ironic moment. President Donald Trump wants a fast impeachment. I do not blame him. He knows, and I believe the Democratic leadership know, that this will easily collapse. I encouraged that the case be strengthened to address deficiencies.

I do have an opinion and offered an extensive analysis to support it. That is my opinion with which many can honest disagree. However, these attacks are more evidence of the “passions” that have out-stripped the proof in this controversy. Hence, the column today.

  2. I was so impressed with Professor Turley critique of the impeachment ‘evidence’ that I am now interested in reading other opinions regarding things that I am sure that he is ‘against’. This is in the hope of discovering my own flaws in reasoning-I don’t want to be in the category of people who are threatening Professor Turley.

  3. Hey, Jonathan. I read your testimony. You put a lot of work into it. Your writing often shows me points and/or perspective I hadn’t yet considered. These are often persuasive on their own merits whether people find that convenient or not. Thanks for always doing your best to stay true to your own best standards and principles of thoroughness in support of optimizing fairness in our system of government.

The impeachment process presents us with 2 choices, a partisan impeachment based on credible circumstantial and confessional evidence (Ukraine and China should both investigate the Bidens) or a President with total, unchecked power. When there were no consequences from the Mueller Report, Trump immediately launched the Ukraine conspiracy.

    Now anyone expressing a yea or nay opinion of the President runs the risk of anonymous threats.

    Hillary and Obama schiff are as crazy as they come. They want what they want, power, martial law, communism. I’ve seen the conspiracy theories. Democrats are the devil full of destruction and this is the devils time to kill, steal, destroy America.
    Almighty God, christians and us deplorables voted Mr trump in office.
    This is BIBLICAL after all this when they all get in, its going to be rapture, tribulation in which ever order God decides. Just believe it.
    Thank you for being honest but if you had gotten Hillary in office this country would be in ruins by now.
    If you vote anyone else in Hillary will have them for lunch just like she already started on Tulsi.

  7. Your testimony was reasonable, thorough, and absent anything that would enrage a non-partisan thinking person. Sadly, there are not many people with the wherewithal to possess these traits at the present moment. It is very very very disheartening to me to see people get so angry about what you said. It’s not anywhere close to worthy of such upset. It was wise and informed and perhaps what makes people angry is that deep down they know you have a good point. They just can’t be bothered to consider it for even two seconds. I would say it is their loss (thinking is a rewarding exercise in of itself) but I fear this kind of non-thinking effects all of us. The center won’t hold when passions are making people so so angry and the angry like being angry. I appreciate your non-opinion and for recognizing the bigger picture in the impeachment proceedings. Anyway, best of luck to you in your teaching and other endeavors.

    My call for greater civility and dialogue may have been the least successful argument I made to the committee. Before I finished my testimony, my home and office were inundated with threatening messages and demands that I be fired from GW.

    But you did call for a COUP. Jonathan Turley called for civility. Neither should have received death threats, but Jonathan Turley is the far better person for asking for civility, which is greatly lacking from your vocabulary.

    I never expected Americans to support a position that boils down to convicting those accused with no representation and no due process. But that is what your accusers are doing.
