Trump: Schiff “Has Not Paid The Price Yet”

We have seen repeated instances where President Donald Trump has stepped on the narrative of his defenders with a single misplaced tweet — often giving opponents precisely what they have been alleging. This weekend is another such example with a tweet saying ominously the House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff has not paid the price yet” for his role in Trump’s impeachment. The tweet sounded not only threatening but was immediately raised by Democrats as supporting what Schiff said in his closing argument about senators fearing retribution from Trump. One can easily view the tweet at a statement about political accountability, but the insistence on attacking Schiff personally is both improper and counter-productive. Trump was impeached by the House, not Schiff. He is fulfilling a duty under the Constitution. Some of us have criticized his representations, but alluding to personal costs for the House managers is wildly inappropriate in the middle of a Senate trial.

Just this week, Schiff may a serious mistake in suggesting that the Republican senators are afraid to stand up to Trump and find their “heads on a pike.” I wrote about this and other missteps by the House managers. Senators objected to the allegation as untrue and ridiculous. Yet some 48 hours later, Trump is tweeting about making Schiff pay.

Once again, I read this as a political not a physical threat. However, a president should not be threatening the house managers at all in the midst of a trial. It was not unreasonable for media to view this as a threat upon the lead House manager.

All of this makes it more difficult for his legal team and his allies. With key swing senators like Collins and Murkowski objecting to insults by Chairman Jerry Nadler and Schiff (and moving toward votes against witnesses), President Trump effectively gutted that position by seemingly threatening the lead manager. This only works to the advantage of the House managers and undermines the position of the President. Both Democrats and Republicans should object to this tweet as inimical to this constitutional process.

  3. Elvis, you apparently lack sufficient knowledge. I’ve been to Trump events and generally there isn’t enough room for everyone to get in even though the facilities were very large.I watched his leading counterpart for the Democrats and sometimes he has only a handful.

    When you look at the politifact rebuttal for the most part they are saying that Trump did well the only question is exactly how well. They twist things their way. For example [regarding rebuilding of the military easiest to explain] when ships were sent to Korea they had to take planes and weapons from various ships to make the ships doing the job whole. They say it takes years to rebuild, but it doesn’t take years to replace things that can be immediately put into production nor does it take years to get replacement parts necessary to make aircraft available for combat. Producing all sorts of missles that were depleted can be done rather quickly. Those are just some quick examples. I don’t know where you guys get your ideas from but they sure don’t represent reality.

      Schiff and Alexander Vindman’s lawyer stepped in pretty fast when Vindman was questioned about who he’d told about the Trump- Ukraine phone call.
      Since Vindman was one of the very few NSC people who listened in on that call, it caused him to be put in the spotlight as the likely conduit of information passed on to the whistleblower.

A president who orders someone like Mr. Parnas whom he says he saw as a shifty lunkhead (not DonJon’s exact words) to “take her out” when talking about a U.S. diplomat, has been watching way too much television. He also might think suborning threatening behavior is part of politics. It is impolitic as all get out. Politics is not about violence or ordering hits on people. We already know that the current U.S. President is seen by all manner of white supremicists, extremist right-wing gun nuts as their leader. Why wouldn’t they respond to the call? We need to take this very seriously. Not taking that guy seriously has created violence and death already.

    “Trump’s flirtation with Bolton sends shivers through Senate”

    John Bolton, the mustache-sporting, Iraq War-cheering former United Nations ambassador, is possibly one of the least diplomatic diplomats ever to serve in the U.S. government. He has argued the U.S. should bomb Iran to stop its nuclear program, dismissed the idea of a Palestinian state and called the United Nations a “twilight zone.”

    Trump has shown a contrarian streak in his appointments so far, so the odds are good that the president-elect will tag Bolton for a powerful Foggy Bottom job. But signs are that senators will put up more resistance to Bolton than Tillerson.

    Already, Republican Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentuckian with a libertarian bent, has threatened to block Bolton, a man he considers a warmonger. On Tuesday, Chuck Schumer, the incoming leader of the Senate Democrats, explicitly compared Tillerson and Bolton in a statement that clearly laid bare his preference, saying: “Mr. Tillerson’s worldview may not seem to be as dangerously interventionist as Mr. Bolton’s.”

    Back in 2005, Bolton, who was serving as undersecretary of state for arms control, failed to get confirmed by the Senate when then-President George W. Bush nominated him as U.N. ambassador. Bush circumvented the process by appointing Bolton during a recess, but not before significant doubts were aired about him by Democrats and State Department colleagues.

    According to media accounts at the time, Bolton was a highly opinionated, intense boss who brooked little opposition to his point of view. One colleague testified that Bolton was a “kiss-up, kick-down kind of guy.”

    His time at the U.N. did little to endear him to Democrats or the international community. Bolton harbors a deep distrust of multinational institutions, and organizations such as the U.N. and the European Union, to him, are threats to national sovereignty and bloated, often-useless bureaucracies.

    A Yale Law School graduate who often brushes off the views of those he calls the “High Minded,” Bolton once said of the U.N.: “The Secretariat building in New York has 38 stories. If it lost 10 stories, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference.” In his 2007 book, “Surrender Is Not an Option: Defending America at the United Nations and Abroad,” Bolton devoted a lengthy passage to his frustrations over how late U.N. meetings often started and how long they could drag.

    Bolton quit the U.N. post after Democrats took control of Congress in the 2006 elections. While he had been considered one of the most hard-line Republicans on the Bush team — thanks in no small part to his support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq — Bolton hinted in his book that he became disillusioned with the Republican president as the years went on because he appeared to succumb to political pressure from the left to be more moderate.

    On the Bush administration’s struggle to deal with North Korea and its nuclear program, for instance, “the permanent government has triumphed over Bush, or at least over his principles,” Bolton wrote, adding that as some Bush aides left, “the departure of many ‘hardliners’ was like eliminating players from the defense team in football.”

    A Bolton aide on Tuesday said he was not granting interviews, and Trump transition officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In recent years, however, Bolton has been a reliable presence on Fox News and other conservative media outlets, using his platforms to bash President Barack Obama at every turn and cultivate his own reputation as a force fetishist.

He’s accused Obama of being weak and indecisive on the world stage, laying the blame for the violence in Syria at his feet. Bolton, now a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, also has voiced major concerns about the nuclear trajectory of North Korea, even alleging that Pyongyang and Tehran are in a secret nuclear alliance.

    Bolton is deeply pro-Israel, so much so that he’s suggested forgetting the idea of creating a Palestinian state. Instead, he’s argued for placing the Gaza Strip under Egyptian control and handing the West Bank to Jordan. The left-leaning Jewish advocacy group J Street is among those urging Trump not to place Bolton at State.

    “We oppose his nomination and believe his confirmation would greatly set back American diplomacy, our country’s national standing and the foreign policy and security interests of the United States and our allies, including Israel,” the group said in a statement.

    Bolton’s disdain for multilateral institutions hasn’t faded since he left the U.N. He cheered Britain’s decision to leave the EU, calling it “a revolution in human affairs, opening up vistas for Britain once buried in European Union bureaucracy.”

    Bolton also has a wariness of treaties and international law. While serving as undersecretary of state for arms, Bolton helped engineer the withdrawal of the U.S. from the 1972 U.S.-Soviet Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. During his tenure at the U.N., he came out against proposals that the U.S. believed would have imposed new legal obligations on nations to intervene in other countries to prevent mass atrocities.

    Bolton also has flirted with the fringes of the right, including people who traffic in anti-Muslim conspiracy theories. He wrote the forward to “The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration’s War on America,” a book co-authored by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, two figures viewed as stridently anti-Muslim by civil rights activists. He’s also been friendly with far-right European leaders such as Britain’s Nigel Farage.

    During the 2016 presidential campaign, Bolton repeatedly said Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton should be in jail. Just this week Bolton suggested that the intelligence-assessed evidence that Russia tried to interfere in this year’s election may have been a “false flag”; after an uproar, he clarified that he did not mean to imply that the Obama administration had planted it.

        If there is proposal to hear additional witness testimony ( beyond what the House put in the record from the impeachment hearings) and it’s shot down, we won’t see additional witnesses in the Senate trial.
        If the Senate approves hearing the testimony from additional witnesses, then we’ll demands for a large list of witnesses.
        The only way I can see that Bolton would be called is if there’s an agreement to call the Bidens, Schiff, and the whistleblower.

Tax cuts mostly benefit the wealthy at the expense of the rest of us, and they have resulted in historic deficits that our children and grandchildren will have to pay. Trump is taking credit for an economy that he had little to nothing to do with.

        Commitments to do something, “being on track”, and actually doing something or causing something to happen aren’t the same thing, so taking credit for a “commitment” or a trajectory is nothing. The Paris Climate Accord will save lives by delaying climate change. Most Americans supported it. Clean Power Plan also will result in deaths from pollution. Most Americans supported it. In fact rolling back environmental protections under the Clean Water Act will result in deaths. Dirty, polluting coal will never be revived as a major energy source. The American people don’t want it. Circuit court judges were confirmed only because McConnell allowed it. During Obama’s Presidency, he sat on both circuit court and SCOTUS nominations, depriving the American people of their choices for jurists, AND Americans’ votes for Senators to make these choices were legal, as opposed to Agent Orange whose presence in the White House was procured by cheating. Taking credit for these nominations is just more grandstanding.

        Democrats DO NOT WANT OPEN BORDERS. Stop lying and fear mongering. Tariffs were a bad idea, and giving taxpayers money to farmers who lost their markets in China due to the tariffs are a bad idea, too, and increase the national debt. Forcing Mexico to hold refugees by bullying them and bribing them is costing us money, as are the Trump concentration camps. The people being held are NOT criminals, vermin, rapists or murderers as Trump claims. Only about 30 ft. of new wall was built, and that was done with funds stolen from the military budget. The “Space Force” is a joke, but not a funny one. Are they going to float about in space and shoot down enemy spacecraft? Nope. The narcissist in chief has to try to have something to brag about. Moving the Embassy to Jerusalem was done to curry favor with wealthy Jews at the cost of pissing off Muslims generally, as the Palestinian people also claim Jerusalem as part of their heritage. This gesture makes it appear that the US is siding with Israel and against the Palestinians in the region. A very bad idea for international diplomacy, and has no value to the average American.

        How has Trump personally stopped prescribers from writing opioid prescriptions? This is something handled on the state and local level. And, improvements for veterans’ health care came from Congress, not Trump, who was too cowardly to even serve this country, lying about nonexistent bone spurs.

        STOP LYING. You’re not going to sell this lying narcissist who tries to take credit for all sorts of things he has nothing to do with and who lies about the effect of rolling back consumer protection and environmental regulations and trying to undo everything Barak Obama did.               To people that are ignorant that short statement might appear devastating to Trump’s reputation but that appearance is wrong and demonstrates how factcheck is spinning the news rather than dealing honestly. After a downturn where loads of jobs are lost we see a growth in the job market that is very high. As more people get jobs the rate trends towards zero. It wasn’t expected that when Trump got to certain numbers that job growth would continue but it did demonstrating that he outperformed what would be expected of any good President.

                Here we’ve included statistics that may seem good or bad or just neutral, depending on the reader’s point of view. That’s the way we did it when we posted our first “Obama’s Numbers” article seven years ago — and in the quarterly updates and final summary that followed. And we’ve maintained the same practice under Trump.

                Then as now, we make no judgment as to how much credit or blame any president deserves for things that happen during his time in office. Opinions differ on that.

                Jobs and Unemployment

                Job growth slowed a bit under Trump, but unemployment dropped to the lowest level in nearly half a century.

                Employment —Total nonfarm employment grew by nearly 6.7 million since the president took office, according to the most recent figures available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

                That continued an unbroken chain of monthly gains in total employment that started in October 2010. The economy has now added jobs every month for more than nine years, including the first two years and 11 months of the Trump administration.

                Yet Trump is far behind the pace needed to fulfill his campaign boast that he will be “the greatest jobs president that God ever created.” At this rate he will not even come up to the gains made during Obama’s final term. The average monthly gain under Trump so far is 191,000 — compared with an average monthly gain of 217,000 during the four years before he took office.

                Unemployment — The unemployment rate, which was well below the historical norm when Trump took office, has continued to fall to the lowest rate in half a century.

                The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the rate was 4.7% when he was sworn in. The most recent rate, for December, was 3.5%. It was also at that level in September and November. Before then it had not been so low since December 1969 — 50 years ago — when it was also 3.5%.

                The jobless rate has been at or below 4% for the most recent 22 months — all under Trump. It hasn’t been that low for that long since a 50-month streak ending in January 1970.

                The historical norm is 5.6%, which is the median monthly rate for all the months since the start of 1948.

                Job Openings — One reason employment growth has slowed is a shortage of qualified workers.

                As of the last day of November, the most recent figure on record, the number of unfilled job openings stood at 6.8 million. That’s a gain of nearly 1.2 million unfilled job openings — or 20.9% — since Trump took office.

                The number has been as high as 7.6 million as recently as January 2019, and also in November 2018, which was the highest in the 19 years the BLS has tracked this figure.

                The number of unfilled jobs has exceeded the number of unemployed people looking for work every month since March 2018. In November, there were 989,000 more job openings than there were people seeking jobs.

                Labor Force Participation — Despite the abundance of jobs, the labor force participation rate — which went down 2.9 percentage points during the Obama years — is up a bit under Trump.

                The labor force participation rate is the portion of the entire civilian population age 16 and older that is either employed or currently looking for work in the last four weeks. Republicans often criticized Obama for the decline during his time, even though it was due mostly to the post-World War II baby boomers reaching retirement age, and other demographic factors beyond the control of any president.

                Since Trump took office, the rate has fluctuated in a narrow range between 63.2% and 62.8%. It was at its highest in December — 0.4 percentage points above where it was the month Trump took office.

                Manufacturing Jobs —Manufacturing jobs increased under Trump, but the early growth slowed to a crawl last year.

                Overall, the number is up by 487,000 under Trump. That followed a net decrease of 193,000 under Obama.

                But the gain in factory jobs came almost entirely in 2017 and 2018, when 458,000 manufacturing jobs were added — a gain of 3.7%, faster growth than the 3.4% for total employment.

                Last year Trump’s trade disputes and tariffs took a toll on the manufacturing sector. During 2019, factory jobs increased by only 46,000, a gain of 0.4%, compared with 1.4% for overall employment.

                The number of manufacturing jobs is still 891,000 below where it was in December 2007, at the start of the Great Recession.
