The Chair of the Conservative Political Action Conference has made news this week by not only saying that Sen. Mitt Romney (R, Utah) was not welcomed at the annual conference, but that the former Republican presidential nominee could be in danger of being being assaulted in such venues. Matt Schlapp said that ” I’d actually be afraid for his physical safety, people are so mad at him.” I recently wrote a Washington Post column defending Romney but the attacks have continued, including an attack by President Donald Trump last night at a campaign rally. It appears that the “Big Tent” party of Ronald Reagan has become a pup tent of exclusion.
In an interview Saturday on “Full Court Press” with Greta Van Susteren, Schlapp added that Romney’s vote was reprehensible: “When he needed a conservative like Donald Trump to endorse him in his Senate primary last time, he wanted him in. But then, when he gets the Senate job, he wants to distance himself from Trump. He’s a use-’em-and-lose-’em kind of guy.”
In fairness to Schlapp, he was not saying that he felt such a violent urge against Romney but that he believed some might harbor such urges after his Senate vote. He was expressing his concern for his safety and he may be right.
The Republican party has long had its famous and inspiring dissenters. Their opposition to aspects of the Party or its leadership was not necessarily correct on the merits, but the party once proudly cited the breadth and scope of its memberships. The statement that Romney is not just unwelcome but could be in physical jeopardy is a chilling statement about the state of our politics. As I wrote recently, there are similar threats being voiced from the other side, though this is a view of one of the main political organizations associated with the Republican party.
Romney voted against one article of impeachment and in favor of another. He did so out of his deep-seated beliefs not just in the case but his religion. That does not mean that he was right, but it means that he did the right thing. When did the party get so small, that there is no room for such a man?
Although I strongly suspect from his history with Trump that Romney confuses virtue signaling and personal animus with his conscience, the reaction from many is obviously out of bounds.
I’m not a fan of Mitt Romney, but CPAC has embarrassed themselves and conservatism in general more than they have done a single thing to hurt Romney’s image. Banning Romney from the CPAC meeting on grounds they can’t provide adequate security for him against attacks by angry conservatives sounds like the dream story of all the leftist political hacks in journalism.

This column highlights an all too familiar pattern: ‘Trump tweets his displeasure with someone and suddenly that person is besieged with hate mail’.
Obviously this pattern is disturbing to anyone who values democracy. Trump behaves like a mafia don. He knows his tweets are going to incite overzealous supporters. Nevertheless he tweets!
One can see on the comment threads of this blog that Trump supporters are unusually hostile when aroused by liberal commenters. Any critic of Donald Trump is savaged in the most vile terms.
For 2 years this commenter has been widely dismissed as a ‘paid troll for Media Matters’. Some might consider this label a backhanded compliment. But it reflects a mentality that every day Americans cannot possibly hold liberal views.
When the ‘Media Matters’ labels failed to deter this commenter from posting (like it was supposed to shame me), one Trump supporter hinted he had research determining this commenter is a ‘resident of West Hollywood’! This assertion is factually incorrect. Yet this commenter suddenly found himself besieged, on these comment threads, by accusations he is ‘gay’.
This ‘gay’ accusation became a daily smear for a period of months. Almost every time this commenter posted, a Trump supporter replied with some variation of the ‘gay’ smear. The objective of this smear rests on a very simple principle: ‘Keep repeating a lie until it gains traction’. People assume if they hear a lie, over and over, there ‘has’ to be some truth.
Professor Turley occasionally writes columns decrying acts of hostility towards Trump supporters wearing MAGA hats. Turley panders to a culture of victimhood embraced by Trump supporters. Yet with this column Turley seems to acknowledge that Donald Trump is, in fact, a bully inciting supporters to harass perceived enemies. Yet I totally expect Turley to write a fresh column soon portraying Trump supporters as ‘victims’.

And Senate Republicans just blocked one of 10 election security bills submitted by Democrats. From CNN: “Democrats tried to get consent to pass two bills that require campaigns to alert the FBI and Federal Election Commission (FEC) about foreign offers of assistance, as well as legislation to provide more election funding and ban voting machines from being connected to the internet.
But Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) opposed each of the requests. Under the Senate’s rules, any one senator can ask for unanimous consent to pass a bill, but any one senator can object and block their requests.
Blackburn accused Democrats of trying to move the bills knowing that GOP lawmakers would block them and giving them fodder for fundraising efforts.”
Why on earth would any Senator oppose these measures, other than to help King Donald cheat once more? The ship of state is in very dangerous waters now. Republicans have lost all sense of decency.

The Chair of this committee publicly rebuked Romney, said he isn’t welcome, acknowledged that these wonderful conservatives might physically assault Romney if he came anyway, but most importantly, never said that he would condemn this conduct or take steps to prevent it. understand the one child policy was a deliberate ploy not only to limit starvation, but long term, to restrict the growth of the labor supply, and eventually increase wages, by killing off the labor surplus

i don’t find totally credible evidence yet that it was an engineered virus, though the claims are out there with some merits. even still, why would they unleash it on their own population?
a) it is killing off old people which is a long term problem for them. helps with pension solvency too,
b) it is not a problem for young people,,,,,, very low mortality among young infecteds, who are often totally asymptomatic

So, if the CPC engineered this virus and unleashed it, well, it’s not like they havent killed off a lot of their own people before. (Red Guards, Great Famine) …. it is unthinkable for a western government, but not for them.

i have a lot better sourcing than the NYT and Wapo just myself. they are idiots. they live in bubbles. there are slow and the editors parse every word they say for approval from above. the guys at Berkshire Hathaway recently said something like “every newspaper is going to die” and it will be richly deserved because they are pathetic. twitter alone is worth more these two combined, even though you have to pick the news out like fishing diamonds out of a pile of manure.
if you want to get fast and realistic news on China you can do the following:
1. read the SCMP.
2. read the CPC approved press and understand their patterns of predictable lying.
3. read the much derided Epoch Times, understanding they have a bone to pick with the CPC since they’re owned by Falun Dafa. this colors some of their reporting for sure, I’ll admit.
4 check in here with me. I do 1 and 2 but unlike the doofuses at the Wapoo or NYT who at best will call other reporters for the skinny, I actually have sources inside the PRC who are regular people
