President Trump on Thursday called on every GOP senator to join a congressional group to advise him on reopening the economy except one: Sen. Mitt Romney. Romney, of course, voted in favor of one of the articles for impeachment. While I disagree with that vote, I still view Romney as an honorable person who cast a vote in good-faith. One would hope that Trump could move beyond the impeachment for the benefit and unity of the nation, particularly during a pandemic.
The other senators were asked to participate on the “Opening Up America Again Congressional Group.” One would think that Romney, a highly successful businessman, would be highly sought after for such a group.
The White House announced that “The dialogue between the President, senior Administration officials, and the bipartisan group of Members of Congress also included a range of topics, namely the need for additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program, the international and domestic supply chains, ways to energize the economy, surprise medical billing, clarifying the difference between essential and non-essential workers, mental health, and relief for small businesses.”
Romney has not only been the Republican presidential nominee, U.S. Senator, and a Governor of a major state, he was also co-founder of Bain Capital a private equity investment firm. That résumé on business and politics is virtually unrivaled in the Senate. More importantly, he is the representative of the people of Utah who deserve to have his voice heard for the benefit of their state. The only reason that he was not included was retaliation for casting his vote on impeachment.
If these reports are true (and there has been no contradiction from the White House), the exclusion of Romney was petty and petulant.

From my own personal observation, Trump loathes anyone who insults him or refuses to work with him. I don’t think he has boundaries when fighting with these people.
I have also observed that the exact second that any of these people lay down arms, and try to cooperate, President Trump seems willing to let bygones be bygones and work together. If later they pick up their swords again, then Trump will get back in his tank and take aim.
We have seen examples of this over and over. Most recent are Governors Cuomo (NY) and Newsom (CA). These men loathe trump, and the feeling is mutual. They have been slinging poop at each other for years. The pandemic hit. The governors needed help. And Trump agreed. Both have said that Trump instantly takes his calls, and has granted every one of their requests he was physically capable of granting. They said he’s done everything in his power to help them, regardless of the fact that they are bitter political enemies. While I oppose Cuomo and Newsom politically, I give each credit for being honest about their experience with President Trump during the pandemic, and to Trump for setting aside the trench warfare and sincerely doing everything he can to help them.
I predict this is how it will be for the duration. If any Democrat or Never Trump Republican lays down their arms, Trump will sincerely work with them. If they insult him, Trump is going to roll the insult around to make a bigger bud mall, and fling it back in their face. He’s like a magnifying mirror.
He may never take the high road during an argument, but I have to say that I greatly appreciate that the man does not let political acrimony stand in the way of helping Americans in need, even if he has a to work with leaders who actively seek to undermine him and get him out of office.
As long as Mitt Romney actively undermines President Trump, and does not show a willingness to work together, he will not be included in invitation only think tanks or committees. He is not in a position of trust. The second that he lays down arms, and wants to work together without sabotage, then he will.
Romeny’s vote reminds me of McCain’s. As promised, the repeal of Obamacare was right up there at the front of the to do list. He promised to vote to repeal it. Ran on that platform. But when the moment of truth came, he bailed. Romney’s vote was not justified by the evidence. With their long history of acrimony, I had to wonder if Romney was voting based on what he thought was Trump’s character flaws, or the evidence.
Trump demands loyalty….no problem there.
I’m open to the argument Trump should get beyond Romney’s impeachment vote, but “an honorable person who cast a vote in good faith?” Let’s not get carried away.
