Despite recent reports raising questions over whether Covid-19 originated in a the Wuhan virology lab and Dr. Fauci admitting that the leak theory was possible (and worth investigating), the science and health reporter for the New York Times declared yesterday that the theory was “racist.” Even Facebook has announced that it is willing to allow users to discuss the theory and underlying evidence. When the tweets triggered an outcry, Apoorva Mandavilli deleted the tweets and, when asked by a Fox reporter for a comment, added “please don’t write” about her controversy.
For over a year, mainstream media including the New York Times has declared that the lab theory was “debunked” which was always demonstrably untrue. The lab theory and the theory of natural origins are just that: theories. There is support and questions for each theory. However, during the Trump Administration, the lab theory became part of a narrative against Trump and his supporters as racists.
Last week, it was disclosed that three researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology required hospitalization in November 2019. It is also known that the lab was working on such bat virus, including dangerous “gain of function” research.
Now various scientists and sources have acknowledged that the lab could be the origin of the virus and should be investigated with the natural origins theory. The change is embarrassing to many reporters who assured readers that the lab theory was debunked racist conspiracy theory.
Apoorva Mandavilli is one of those who was supposed to be covering such stories and exploring all possible origins. She is insisting that, regardless of what Fauci or others say, it is nothing more than a racist conspiracy theory. She tweeted “Someday we will stop talking about the lab leak theory and maybe even admit its racist roots. But alas, that day is not yet here.” She added that “A theory can have racist roots and still gather reasonable supporters along the way. Doesn’t make the roots any less racist or the theory any more convincing, though.”
Many noted that a science writer should … well … follow the science. An objective reporter would recognize that either origin is possible but that there is thus far no conclusive evidence. The lack of evidence is due in large part to the Chinese government arresting scientists, barring access, and preventing full inquiries despite the death of millions around the world.
Mandavilli later revised her statement to say that the lab theory is “possible” but not “plausible.” She did not explain why it is not plausible or why (if it is possible) it is clearly also a racist theory.
Later she deleted the tweets and, when a reporter contacted her, explained “I deleted it because it unleashed some incredibly nasty tweets and DMs. So please don’t write about it.”
It was an ironic request because the New York Times had long decided not to write about the lab theory while claiming it was a racist conspiracy theory.
Mandavilli still seem to view this fact as “too good to check” despite growing countervailing statements. Asked if the virus’ origin presumptively was forged in nature, Fauci said: “No, actually. I am not convinced about that. I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened.” Likewise, former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Robert Redfield has said publicly that he believes the virus escaped from the Chinese lab.
Retired New York Times science editor Nicholas Wade has chastised his former colleagues for ignoring the obvious evidence supporting a lab theory as well as Chinese efforts to arrest scientists and destroy evidence that could establish the origin.
Mandavilli is one of those colleagues but she appears undeterred by the science and unmotivated to question her own rejection of lab theory.

As a long time reader of The New York Times and Washington Post, I know they carried coverage that entertained the laboratory leak theory. And I remember thinking that theory was compelling based on said coverage.
But then Donald Trump started his, “Let’s call it the Wuhan Virus” campaign. And sure enough, racial attacks against Asians became a regular news story not long after. At that point mainstream media had some obligation to put the lab leak story on hold.
These developments illustrate how Trump poisoned every issue he touched. It was impossible to have scientific discussions with Trump still in office.
There’s also some earlier interviews , Jan/Feb… 2020 I also need to review, but the main point is that people like Obama, Fauci, others signed off of transferring some of that covid research to China from Chapel Hill NC & we also know, like from this week’s Senate hearings, those US funds are being tracked by file numbers…

I heard that type story line early last year, but I’m not see where hard evidence of fact. That’s what would be most helpful.

Conspiracy theory.
It might be worth taking some time to define what that is. One core underpinning of a conspiracy theory is that it is factually implausible and/or almost completely improbable.
Let’s lay out the very broad circumstantial facts behind the Wuhan lab theory:
A biolab is located in Wuhan that is focused on coronavirus related research, specifically bat coronaviruses. Moreover, it is focused on gain of function research. In other words, on a macro level the areas that the Wuhan biolab is researching have direct parallels to the key aspects of SARS-CoV-2 as we know it.
As a matter of logic and without needing an in-depth understanding of the science, the Wuhan lab leak theory was always plausible and, in fact, a strong possibility that was deserving of a credible investigation. Coincidence maybe, conspiracy theory no.
Yet the media rushed to assure the public that this was a debunked conspiracy theory because, among other reasons: 1) “actual” scientists determined that SARS-CoV-2 had zoonotic origins and was not laboratory derived, 2) it would be almost impossible for the virus to escape from the Wuhan lab and 3) the director of the Wuhan lab corroborated all of this.
As strange as it may seem, the media conveniently forgot to mention that there were numerous leading scientists that were supportive of the lab leak theory as a possibility (naturally, they were not “actual” scientists and therefore not deserving of mention–neat how that works, please see the Great Barrington declaration for the unfortunate sequel on this tact), that viruses escaping lab environs no matter how secure are hardly infrequent and of course, that the obviously impartial director of the Wuhan lab would have no possible incentive that might influence his statements. Lest we forget, this is, after all, the journalism of “moral clarity”.
In the end with all the recent revelations, we know that the Wuhan lab leak conspiracy theory is, in fact, a conspiracy theory in and of itself.
However, for those that reside exclusively in the MSM echo chamber, fact devoid, alternate universe you can take comfort in the following:
1) An alleged “science journalist” has determined that the Wuhan lab leak is simply implausible and moreover (no, wait for it)…..racist. There are no supportive facts given and apparently none are needed. Nothing to see here, we should all move on, it’s better that way. So, yeah.
2) The ever intrepid Biden administration, after cancelling an ongoing investigation into the SARS-CoV-2 origins (by the administration that shall not be named) and being publicly outed, has now requested the IC conduct a 90 day review which Biden will make public unless it contains “something he’s unaware of” (which circles back to the fact that he cancelled the investigation in the first place).
In other noteworthy news, the WaPo reports that the CCP reiterates its assertion that SARS-CoV-2 did not originate in Wuhan at all–rather it originated from a US military base, Ford Detrick in Frederick, Md. No supportive facts are given and apparently none are needed.
