Bryn Mawr College Professor Declares America a “Failed Experiment” Created Just “For White People”

Chanelle Wilson is an assistant professor of education and director of Africana Studies at the affluent all-women’s Bryn Mawr College. She is the author of a new book on teaching critical race theory and anti-race practices at universities. On a recent podcast, Wilson offered a glimpse into those teachings which include the “fact” that America is a failed experiment that has done nothing for any group other than white people.

Wilson was speaking on the “Refuse Fascism” podcast with host Samantha Goldman. Goldman was the organizer of the much covered “Handmaid’s Tale” protests during the Trump Administration. Goldman, who reportedly identifies as a communist, can be seen here organizing in the 2020 election.

Wilson’s extremist views have not been widely reported outside of conservative sites like College Fix. However, in the podcast, Wilson shares an unvarnished account of what she claims to be undeniable “facts” about this failed country and the goal of this work. She insists that the country was designed and has only worked for white people. She then added that it

“didn’t work for black people” and “Damn sure it didn’t work for indigenous people… It did not work for people of Mexican ancestry. It didn’t work for Asians, it didn’t work for Jewish people, it didn’t work for Japanese people. It didn’t work for Chinese people. So who is this country for? This country is only for white people.”

She added that people of color are told by white U.S. citizens: “Don’t ask for too much, be happy that you’re allowed to be here, don’t make a ruckus, don’t say anything, don’t have a brain, don’t learn, don’t do any of those things…that is the truth.”

That truth may come as a surprise to the many in these groups. It is bizarre to claim that Jewish people and Asian people for example did not find success in this country, but Wilson claims that as an undeniable fact. Likewise, many in the Latino and Black communities have found great success in this country despite the continuing struggle with poverty in all of our communities.  There is no denying a wealth gap between racial groups, which continues to trouble many in our country. However, it is ridiculous to claim that groups have not found success in this country, which continues to draw millions to our shores as immigrants.

Wilson uses the claim of America as a “failed experiment” to call for people to “recognize that none of this works for your average ‘American citizen.’ It doesn’t. So why wouldn’t we try something new? This whole experiment is failed. Their experiment has failed.” That clearly appealed to Goldman who declared “I don’t think there can be redemption until there is no America.” It was a weird moment since Goldman was an organizer for Joe Biden in 2020–just six months ago.

All of this was part of any effort to get educators and others to buy and assign her new book “Building Courage, Confidence and Capacity in Learning and Teaching Through Student-Faculty Partnership.” The book seeks to further organization student and faculty classroom collaboration in advancing critical race studies.

 

Despite the false factual claims and extremist rhetoric, I would be the first to defend Wilson right to espouse such views (though I am not sure either she or Goldman would feel the same inclination to defend my right to speak). We have been discussing efforts to fire professors who voice dissenting views on various issues including an effort to oust a leading economist from the University of Chicago as well as a leading linguistics professor at Harvard and a literature professor at Penn. Sites like Lawyers, Guns, and Money feature writers like Colorado Law Professor Paul Campos who call for the firing of those with opposing views (including myself).  Such campaigns have targeted teachers and students who contest the evidence of systemic racism in the use of lethal force by police or offer other opposing views in current debates over the pandemic, reparations, electoral fraud, or other issues.

The support for such diversity of thought is essential for higher education. However, that does not mean that we should not call out such inaccurate and extremist viewpoints. While figures like liberal theorist William Galston has called out critical race theory as challenging the very foundations of our country:

“one thing is clear: Because the Declaration of Independence—the founding document of the American liberal order—is a product of Enlightenment rationalism, a doctrine that rejects the Enlightenment tacitly requires deconstructing the American order and rebuilding it on an entirely different foundation.”

Jonathan: Some of your loyal followers have taken umbrage at my comments re: your column on professor Chanelle Wilson. “George” thinks the professor is “an illegal alien in need of immediate deportation…”. George wears his racism as a badge of honor like Donald Trump and white nationalists every where.

    Others are more thoughtful and nuanced in their criticisms. “Karen” correctly points out that Catholics were discriminated through much of our early history. But today a follower of a small conservative Catholic sect. Amy Comey Barrett, can be appointed to the Supreme Court. Jews have also found acceptance on the courts and in many administrations–even in the Trump administration–as long as they shared his authoritarian views. It is sadly ironic that in his racist and anti-Semitic views Trump was greatly influenced by Roy Cohn. Anti-Semitism is still prevalent among white nationalist supporters of Trump. And the Catholic church hierarchy has had an enormous influence on Catholic politicians and public policy–see, e.g., Paul Ryan and the fight over abortion. On the subject of immigration Karen seems to share the view of Florida Gov, Ron DeSantis on immigration. The Governor says migrants are bringing Covid across the border. DeSantis blames Biden for facilitating the spread of the Delta variant in Florida with his alleged “open border” policies. Besides the fact there is no “open border, the data don’t support the Governor’s hysterical rhetoric. The CDC and Florida health officials indicate the cause of the rapid spread of the Delta variant is due to the low level of vaccination in Florida, DeSantis’ anti-mask policy and very little contact tracing. The Delta variant originated in India–not Mexico. DeSantis is scapegoating his failure to follow CDC guidelines.

    “Mespo727272” first compliments me for being a “critical thinker” but then says I am “classically dumb” because “institutional racism” ended 60 years ago. Is he sure? What about the recent voter suppression laws passed in Georgia and other GOP controlled states. Now the proponents of these laws say they are intended to give voters confidence in the “integrity of elections”. We know that is all just BS. These laws are intended solely to make it harder for Black and Brown to vote so the white power structure can hold onto power. This is “institutional racism”. Besides these racist laws is the problem of STRUCTURAL racism. Take education, for example. From the inception of this country education has been very unequal. Even today many school districts still rely, in great part, on property taxes to fund schools. That means in rich white neighborhoods kids get a good education while in poorer Black and Brown neighborhoods the children don’t share the same benefits. They are deprived of the quality and equal education they are entitled to under the constitutions of most states. Academic studies show that when Black, Brown and Native American children receive the same quality education they do just as well as white children. This disproves the racist theory that whites are more “naturally gifted” by having higher IQs.

    Now I know you take pride in the millions that follow your columns. But, frankly Jonathan, I would be embarrassed by the overt racism and lack of rigorous intellectual analysis by some of your adherents.

Just my opinion, but … Many of today’s problems are made worse by higher “education’s” decisions to create and staff and fill up classes with such kinds of “education” as Afrikanner studies, gender studies, racism studies, latina/hispanic studies. This woman’s nonsensical “scholarship” is proof of this!

While I agree that some progress has been made Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans still lag behind whites in education, employment, housing and equal access to healthcare. You say Jews and Asians have enjoyed “success”. That was not always the case and acts of racist violence still persist. Apparently forgetting our history you fail to mention the Chinese Exclusion Act and the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WW11. For all the 19th century and well into the 20th Jews were discriminated against by the white Protestant/ Catholic power structure. During Trump’s four years in office there was an upsurge in anti-Semitic attacks –killing Jewish worshippers and vandalizing Jewish cemeteries–all committed by white anti-semites who supported Trump. In recent months there have been a number of racist attacks on Chinese and Korean-Americans in the streets.

    In a related issue the 2020 census results are out–and not good news for the preservation of white power. Since 2010 the population increased by 23 million–almost entirely made up of Hispanic, Asians and Blacks. In Houston, San Antonio and Dallas this trend outpaced the rest of the country. No wonder GOP Gov. Abbott, through gerrymandering and new voter suppression laws, wants to make it harder for these groups to vote in Texas. Abbott sees the handwriting on the wall! Trump and Ted Cruz have also seen the danger. They complained last year that if Blacks and Hispanics are allowed to vote in great numbers the GOP would never win another national election. Trump recognizes the problem from bitter experience. Last year Hispanic and Black voters made the margin of difference in states like Georgia and Arizona. This strikes fear in the white power structure. For years white right-wing writers propounded the bizarre conspiratorial “replacement theory” that there is a cabal of Dems, Jews (Gorge Soros) and the “radical left” orchestrating an invasion of Brown people to “replace” whites. Tucker Carlson and Newt Gingrich on Fox have pushed the false theory that white “Western civilization” is threatened by immigrants, Muslims, feminists and gays. So, despite your efforts to convince us otherwise and despite professor Galston’s pronouncement that our Founding documents were the “product of Enlightenment rationalism”–not the “product” of implicitly incorporating the institution of slavery–we should not see our country through your rose colored glasses.

    On an unrelated issue, and following up on your 8/3 column about professor Todd Zywicki objecting to being required to get vaccinated under George Mason University’s mandate, conservative SC Justice Amy Comey Barrett just refused to block Indiana University’s similar mandate for all faculty, staff and students. Eight students at IU asked the Court for an emergency order blocking the mandate . They argued their objections were “based on legitimate concerns including underlying medical conditions, having natural anti-bodies,…”. The latter condition you argued was a reason Zywicki should not have to be vaccinated. Care to revisit the Zywicki case? Probably not.

      This is the first reference I ever saw regarding this alleged ‘power structure’.

      In the 19th and early 20th Centuries, power was held by White Anglo Saxon Protestants or WASPS, as they were commonly known. They didn’t share power with Catholics. Catholicism was the religion of so-called ‘White minorities’, or ‘White ethnics. The Irish, Italians and Poles were not assimilated into the mainstream until after World War II.

        After Henry VIII left the Church and formed the Anglican church in order to get a divorce, there was intense bias against Catholics. For example, an officer in the Royal Navy used had to swear he opposed the Pope. Part of a clergyman’s vows involved condemning Catholics.

        Great violence was waged in Ireland as Protestants and Catholics fought.

        I’ve still had people tell me that they think the Pope controls Catholics like a cult leader.

        JFK had to fight this anti-Catholic prejudice, which made his election president historical.

        That said, Christians and Muslims have a long history of discriminating against Jews, although Muslims made it blood sport. I’ve attended Mass in many different states, and several other countries, and I never heard any priest direct us to hate Jews, or to blame them for Christ’s sacrifice. But that prejudice against Jews is out there.

        As for your other topics, color doesn’t matter to a conservative; culture does. We have far more in common with black, Latino, and Asian conservatives than we do with shrieking, hysterical white Antifa or far Left activists who can’t get through a meal without calling everyone racists. The concern isn’t the color of the population, but rather the massive influx of people, way too quickly to assimilate, from countries with a history of violence against women, corruption, and other biases that don’t evaporate when they set foot on our soil.

        People flee Cuba and Venezuela, and they vote conservatively here. They know what socialism is like in reality. People from other parts of the world bring their problems here. There are parts of Europe where Jews and women may not walk without fear in neighborhoods that were formerly safe. Too many too fast.

        When a million illegal immigrants are allowed to come, many of which have Covid, in less than a year, and they need high levels of financial support, services, and they take all of the entry level jobs during a pandemic, when so many people were out of work, that’s negligence in governance. Those who condescend about these concerns typically are not affected personally. Therefor I propose that Congress put their money where their mouths are. Those who kept those borders open, during a pandemic, should have the one million illegal aliens sent to not only their states, but their local communities. They should use the expensive private schools where they send their own kids to take on the overwhelming numbers of ESL students who are grievously behind in school. Schools can help a number of ESL students thrive and succeed. But when the numbers become a tsunami, the rest of the students cannot learn when the class plays catchup. Test scores plummet. Opportunities for students dry up. The strain on education resources is too great when the numbers are not moderated. Let these rich politicians build low income houses in their own neighborhoods to house enormous numbers of South Americans, Somalians, etc. Let their communities stretch their resources to the utmost trying to triage the needs of such an astronomical wave of newcomers. Make sure to send the skilled illegal immigrants to compete in their neighborhoods.

        When it takes 8 hours to be seen in their ER, when 80% of their kids’ class are ESL, when the wineries are full of homeless camps, when fentanyl packed in with the cartels alongside the human smuggling decimates their towns, when the signs all change to trilingual, and when it becomes unsafe for the Jewish neighbors and women to walk in certain areas, maybe then they might finally grasp the concept of the logistics of massive population migrations. When they complain we’ll laugh and say they’re “Muricans” worried “they’ll take their jobs”, total xenophobes.

        Immigration is like vitamins. Just enough is healthy; too much is deadly.

      Ah, yes it’s a big, big question, but only if you’re a critical thinker. Behold the classic non-sequitur. It does not nessesarily follow that because certain groups “lag behind” other groups that “persistent racism” is the cause. Nor is it “obvious” given the 150 years or so that have transpired since the formal end of slavery or the 60 years or so since the end of institutional racism. Even assuming there is persisitent racism against the cited groups (and that’s a big assumption not born out by the data) there are other reasons that could explain the phenonmena like IQ, family resources, intact nuclear families, time in one location, emphasis on education at home, rigorous primary schooling, and a myriad of other reasons all unrelated to intentional racism. This is why liberals are so classically dumb. They have limited ability to think in a linear logical way or to consider alternative explanations to their blubbering. It’s all sentimentality wrapped in emotion overlain with feelings. Too bad. Facts don’t care about your feelings as Ben Shapiro would say. Prove your point with facts proving the existence and causation of your assertion or go cry in a corner.

He also tells us that Jews are not always successful. He could have also said that all white people are not successful. These indolent race hustlers should consider the cost America’s paid to advance the cause of one or more ethnic, racial or other sub groups to make amends and to enforce the a clause of the Declaration of Independence that “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL” , and the preamble of Constitution of United States; “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

    These race hustlers are tying to undermine the Foundation of the United States by picking apart the structure above as flawed. The foundations design is neither weak nor wrong. The structure resting on the foundation may have had many flaws when originally built, but through remodeling and removal of components of the structure it is stronger and contemporary to all its inhabitants. There are some inhabitants who refuse to see the repairs or additions to the structure to accommodate their progenitors and the benefits they now enjoy. Never has mankind built any structure flawless, whether with brick or words.

    These hustlers whatever category they arose from should consider all the amendment that have been added to the original Bill of Rights, and the laws which have been modified or added to our record since the inception of these United States. To the Black community in particular, consider the costs many paid to preserve the union, and their freedom from Slavery. More than 2 Million soldier and sailors fought for the Union, 590 Thousand were killed, wounded, captured or missing in action. The Union had 30,000 die in Confederate prisons, the Battle of the Wilderness cost 30,000 dead, Chickamauga had 35,000 and the deadliest Gettysburg saw 51,000 men who would not see a sunrise again, just to name a few battles.

    These insolent rustlers offer now solutions for their supposed grievances just the standard rhetoric everyone else is racist, not considering actually looking in the MIRROR for self examination. These pedantic race hustlers, apathetic to the truth, should be shunned and made a mockery of when they disparage the greatest county that has ever existed on earth.

There is money to be made by morons who can not earn decent money in the real world and that is why there are more diversity staff on campus than there is history staff. The biggest boom in hiring at corporations is in the “diversity” department. If you have a highly paid diversity person with a highly paid assistant diversity person with a staff of decently paid diversity officers guess what will happen…the “diversity” staff will find problems in the company’s operation because to do otherwise would negate their jobs.           There is no preclusion of opinions on race, or discrimination based on race or any other criteria in the Constitution, and no statute which nullifies that fundamental law is valid or licit. In fact, Americans enjoy the right to and freedom of speech which, de facto, includes the right to and freedom of thought, otherwise knows as opinion, on any and all subjects, per the Constitution and Bill of Rights, with emphasis on the 9th Amendment.

          A statement based on phantom or fictitious “charges” is moot.

    The status of the Naturalization Act of 1802 was never modified legally or constitutionally.

    Everything “Crazy Abe” Lincoln did was unconstitutional, illicit and illegitimate, and continues to be such to this day, understanding that crime does not pay.

    The Naturalization Act of 1802 was in full force and effect in 1863, upon the issuance of the unconstitutional emancipation proclamation, which compelled the immediate deportation of freed slaves, which were confiscated, legal, deeded and recorded private property.

    The only thing Lincoln should have done was submit to impeachment, conviction and penalization with extreme prejudice for egregiously violating and subverting the Constitution and the United States of America,

Karen: you don’t know what a “conservative” is because you think you are a “conservative”, and that Fox News, OAN, News Max, Trump and other pro-Trump media are “conservative”, but you are wrong. Trump didn’t wait to have Tiffany until after he married her mother–she attended her parents’ wedding. Trump didn’t study hard, either, and had someone else take his SATs. He was a failure at business, needing to be bailed out by his father well into his forties. He is a fundamentally dishonest person and has had this reputation for his entire adult life, as well as being flashy, misogynistic and braggadocious.

      Families who inculcate their children with values of honesty, integrity, a work ethic, and the importance and value of education prepare their children for a successful life. These are not exclusively “conservative” values, and aren’t limited to 2-parent homes. I know of multiple single-parent black families who have raised successful children, and of white families with two parents, whose kids didn’t turn out so well. It’s the example the parent/s set and their values that matter. Trump is a poor example of the things that set a good example for children.

  13. I wish people who say that America is an irredeemable racist country, a “failed experiment”, would move. Live abroad and try it, for at least a year. But it cannot be a European-founded country. After all, that’s irredeemably racist white patriarchal cis-gendered heteronormative, etc. They usually claim capitalism is a failed experiment.

    They need to live in South Africa, Nigeria, Rwanda, North Korea, Venezuela…Try it for a while and then come back and talk about their experiences and what they’ve learned.

    I fail to see the difference — other than this: CRT academics are more evil, because they are home-grown and because they are betraying the greatest country in human history.

  15. The movie, television, media, book publishing, sports business’.. and that’s just for starters… are run and owned by and large by the jews and always have been. Jews make up 3% of the population. They are smart shred go-getters, it’s just the way it is.
