“This Work Terrifies Me”: Virginia Tech Professor Triggers Free Speech Debate Over “Who I Am” Statement

“I am a Caucasian cisgender female and first-generation college student from Appalachia who is of Scottish, British, and Norwegian heritage. I am married to a cisgender male, and we are middle class. While I did not ‘ask’ for the many privileges in my life: I have benefitted from them and will continue to benefit from them whether I like it or not.” At the end of her statement, Duncan Lane apologizes to students for the “inexcusable horrors within our shared history.”

The site Campus Reform further quotes Lane as saying

“This is injustice. I am and will continue to work on a daily basis to be antiracist and confront the innate racism within myself that is the reality and history of white people. I want to be better: Every day. I will transform: Every day. This work terrifies me: Every day. I invite my white students to join me on this journey. And to my students of color: I apologize for the inexcusable horrors within our shared history.”

The statement is reminiscent of other such declarations discussed earlier on this site. Last year, we discussed the controversy over the acting Northwestern Law Dean declaring publicly to “I am James Speta and I am a racist.” He was followed by Emily Mullin, executive director of major gifts, who announced, “I am a racist and a gatekeeper of white supremacy. I will work to be better.” Other faculty have been more accusatory of others like the Brandeis dean who declared “all whites are racist.”

Such statements reflect deep-seated political and social views from faculty. Those views may be deeply insulting for students or other faculty. However, I believe that they are still protected speech and reflect intellectual views protected under academic freedom.

The concern that I have is the inconsistent treatment of such controversies where conservative or contrarian faculty are given little accommodation, including a recent case at St. Joseph’s University. A conservative North Carolina professor  faced calls for termination over controversial tweets and was pushed to retire. Dr. Mike Adams, a professor of sociology and criminology, had long been a lightning rod of controversy. In 2014, we discussed his prevailing in a lawsuit that alleged discrimination due to his conservative views.  He was then targeted again after an inflammatory tweet calling North Carolina a “slave state.”  That led to his being pressured to resign with a settlement. He then committed suicide  just days before his last day as a professor.

Professor Lane is expressing her views of racism, including her own bias or privilege. Students can decide whether they wish to take her class in light of such views and whether they suggest a countervailing bias. I see nothing in the statement that suggests that Professor Lane would be biased against white students. These statements are tied to how academics view systemic racism and the bias that comes from personal privilege. Those statements should be protected — as should countervailing statements — from faculty.

“I’d turn out to boo hiss Biden. And everyone propping him up.”

Propping up a frail and physically weak Biden for the good of the country is one thing; echoing Trump’s lie of “fake news” in order to crush the Fourth Estate is quite another.

        1. So basically, you can’t defend Biden, but you deflect to Trump hoping that you can somehow erase the complaint?
That’s your only defense most of the time, and it implies tacit admission of the truth of your opponent’s statement.
          Boring.

Now hear this and get it through your olde thick head: I will not defend Biden’s policies or mental health to a bunch of liars! It’s a waste of time!

            Got it?

            1. Sounds like this guy’s brain has been replaced with concrete. Nothing in. Nothing out.

      2. Karen: most Americans are “propping up” Biden. You remain in denial over the fact that it’s just those in your little alt-right discipleship bubble who hate Biden and who believe the Big Lie. Go to Arkansas where there are more like-minded people, but take along a ventilator, just in case.

  1. The Left/Democrats have reached a new level of idiocy in their attempt to line up with the worst tyrants the world has seen. Mao, Hitler, Stalin, Chavez, Castro, and the left cabal all required these absurd mea culpa’s in their attempt to control speech, control minds, and profit their pocketbooks and their power holds. Let these Dems make fools of themselves. It’s a clown show led by a clown and his clown band.

    1. So the current Chairman of the JCS holds the view that he has the authority to prevent the CinC from carrying out his constitutional duties? Perhaps even worse, he would eliminate a first strike advantage by alerting the target(s) to an imminent attack? What are the odds his position has weakened with cognitively-impaired Biden in office?

18 U.S. Code Treason: Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

18 U.S. Code Seditious conspiracy: If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.

This is the guy lecturing Congress about January 6th? why is this guy still wearing a the uniform and not being court-martialed?

      1. Olly says:

“why is this guy still wearing a the uniform and not being court-martialed?”

Let’s hear what Turley has to say about it. Knowing how he likes to appeal to both sides in a bid to maintain his perceived non-partisanship, I’ll wager he would agree that his conduct is worthy of a Court-Martial, but the Republicans have not established enough evidence of criminal intent in their headlong rush to convict him.

        1. The General pretty much made the case with his own statement. Remember what Professor Turley said about admission against interest.

          1. Young says:

“The General pretty much made the case with his own statement. Remember what Professor Turley said about admission against interest.”

“Pretty much” is hardly beyond a reasonable doubt. Turley also said that there should be no “Snap Impeachments.” Hence, no snap court-martials. Get it?

            1. Jeff: “Get it?”
              ***

Yes, in fact I do. Despite your claim you obviously are not a lawyer. If you were you would have gotten it.

Even the execrable Vindman has said Milley needs to resign immediately for that statement.

I suspect pretty much everyone in the military is shocked by his admission of betrayal. It was a sort of 7 Days in May thing.

                1. Thanks for pointing out that leetle condition “if.” I should have known better to take anything Young said at face value. Lesson learned.

                  1. “PERIL” by Bob Woodward reports it. I thought you lefties worshiped everything Woodward said.

                    1. ““PERIL” by Bob Woodward reports it.”

Duh. I already pointed that out in my 3:53pm comment to you.

“I thought you lefties worshiped everything Woodward said.”

You thought wrong, and I already explained why in my 3:53pm comment.

What a wicked web they all weaved against Our USA!

                    2. Milley should be questioned about it under oath.

But if he actually said that, and none of the people who listened to the call in real time chose to submit a whistleblower report to the DOD IG, the problem goes beyond Milley.

              1. Actually, I have not had a chance to read what he had said. As you can tell, I’ve spent all my time today batting back Trumpist lies today on this blog.

                I’ll turn on MSNBC now.

                1. As you can tell, I’ve spent all my time today batting back Trumpist lies today on this blog.

                  Tilt away, Don Quixote. 🤣

            2. Hey JeffSilberman, where were you an the “snap” impeachment of Donald Trump. What would you think of a trial in a TV talk show where no witnesses were allowed for the defense. You would be the first to compare the trial to something that would happen in Russia. Where is your rage against the outrage today. Singing with the crickets.

    2. I thought you didn’t trust the Washington Post, which is the source for the GP article.

Woodward can quote what someone says in an interview with Woodward. But Woodward would have no way to quote what was said on a phone call between Milley and Li unless someone else recorded the call and leaked the transcript.

Looks like there are a lot of quotes like this in Woodward’s new book. Are you going to assume they’re all accurate?

Personally, unless Woodward can present audio or a confirmed transcript for all of his quotes (like he did with his quotes from Trump in his previous book), I’m not going to assume these quotes are accurate.

          1. Were it not considered men’s work, I’m sure she would have happily pulled the lever to release the blade. Be that as it may, Wen Bars exhibits the sort of attitude one would expect of a someone who would chortle with pleasure each time she heard the head of a Never Trumper, mine included, plop onto the hay covered wooden slats of the guillotine as she high-fived her Trumpist pals.

Perhaps Wen Bars more closely resembles Ma Grier in “The Ox-bow Incident.” That fat frustrated old cow who got her jollies hangin’.

Either way, it’s not a pretty picture. I don’t fear you, Young, quite as much as I fear her.

  2. This is an attack from Satan, that old dragon, the devil.

“Who are you”, asks Satan? A true test of free speech.

  3. Consider for a moment that we have people in this country that believe if you’re white, you are by nature a racist. But, you have no natural rights.

This is a war not over the size of government or taxes, but over the American way of life. The war is between those who salute the flag, and those who take a knee. Those who believe that America is built on freedom, and those who believe America is built on racism. Those who are convinced that America is good, and those who are convinced America is bad. These differences are too large to bridge. This is what makes it a war. In this case, a cold civil war.

Winning a war requires two fundamental understandings. First, you must understand that you are, in fact, in a war. Wartime requires very different rhetoric, strategy, and people than peacetime. Trump is a wartime leader. Second, you must understand your enemy, what it wants and how it goes about getting what it wants. What our enemy wants is the destruction of the American way of life. It goes about it by trying to force everyone to say “America is systemically racist.” If it can convince us of this falsehood, it will be well on its way to overturning the American way of life.

Every time Joe Biden accuses America of being systemically racist, he is, though he doesn’t know it, calling for the overthrow of the American way of life. In a war, you must play to win. But you cannot win against an enemy that has no name, or has many names—identity politics, multiculturalism, anti-racism, wokeism, and more. My entry for a name is Woke Communism, Woke Comm for short. Whatever the name, I think it should communicate totalitarianism because this is what the enemy seeks to impose.

    1. Olly,

My guess is your way too old to do any fighting in the civil war to come. With a cold Pabst in hand, you’ll just content yourself to be an armchair general- a self-styled 5-star General of the Army. Now, I’m cracking up at the thought!

      1. Some old guys pitched in and helped fight at Gettysburg.

Besides, there are more ways to fight than squatting with a rifle in a foxhole. Most modern military organizations are heavy on support and administrative personnel.

            1. Young says:

“Olly, I think so to. I suspect he is a puffy little snowflake.”

Puffy? Snowflake, ok. But you had to throw in “puffy?”

          1. Olly says:

“My guess is Silberman is doing what Leftists do, project their own failures and weaknesses onto others.”

But the difference between you and me, at least, I don’t lie about my failures and weaknesses. You do.

        1. -Young,
I know a number of older vets who while they may not be able to conduct maneuver warfare like us youngins, the knowledge they got in the military still applies. They may not be on the front lines, but they still can contribute in other ways, like training, logistics, comms etc.

          1. Upstate — Yes, that’s what I was thinking of too. When I read “Lee’s Lieutenants’ a four volume account of the Army of Northern Virginia I was surprised to see that even back then the administrative end of war was enormous. I think General Lee and his staff spent far more time and mental effort on administrative details than they did on actual combat. Any experienced older person could pitch in and help enormously with that. The guy in the line, no matter how courageous, can’t fight without the big administrative tail that gets him weapons, ammunition, food, shelter, uniforms, training, and replacements to mention only a few things.

One administrative reform I would like to see in the army is a requirement that all JAG lawyers serve at least a month in the front line of a combat area for awhile. Our troops are too over lawyered by manicured snowflakes.

            1. -Young,
              Well said.
In a situation like that, one may find themselves wearing many different occupational specialty hats then just in the fighting hole, depending on their skill sets.

              1. UpstateFarmer says:

“In a situation like that, one may find themselves wearing many different occupational specialty hats then just in the fighting hole, depending on their skill sets.”

Oh, come on, you and Young are a yellow as President Bone Spurs!

        2. Young says:

“Besides, there are more ways to fight than squatting with a rifle in a foxhole. Most modern military organizations are heavy on support and administrative personnel.”

Is that where you envision yourself in the coming civil war? Being well behind the trenches as an administrative personnel? I suppose that is still better than Olly who I imagine will not leave the comfort of his couch close to his fridge.

  4. First of all what is “human development and family science” and why is this person even talking about race? Secondly if you are actually competent at what you do why should I care what you look like? Lastly if you are not competent what in the hell are you doing teaching others?

  5. This is one step away from Jonestown. Cult members were (are) encouraged to make public confessions as part of their conditioning. Groupthink and Doublethink. The next step is standing in line for Kool-aid.

Just pass out the syllabus, SOPs and expectations and leave yourself out of it. Who cares about the professor’s personal life. Few if any of my professors knew much about my life nor did they really care. What mattered to me was if they were qualified to teach the class. Professional qualifications? Sure.

Regarding her sentiment about privilege, why not quietly work behind the scenes to assure that her non-traditional students have every opportunity to succeed, including her personal time after class. This would go further than a bizarre Mia culpa.

  6. “I am a cog in the authoritarianism machine and you will behave accordingly if you want to pass this class, sinners.”

  7. I agree that it’s protected speech. My concern, as either a student or a parent of a student, would be that this professor doesn’t seem to exactly be the sharpest tool in the shed.

  8. In the meantime, a white man that openly flaunts his privilege as governor of California is lauded by the Left as they in turn denounce his main challenger on this recall as a white supremacist in black face.

    This is systemic Marxism.

    1. Olly,

Don’t worry. Trump has already called the election a “scam.” Elder has already intimated he may not accept the results.

      This is systemic Lyin’

      1. Republicans showing up to vote are being told they have already voted. Election fraud is par for the course in California apparently.

        1. “Republicans showing up to vote are being told they have already voted.”

Unless they submit a statement saying so under penalty of perjury, there is no reason to believe this.

            1. Yep, clearly asking for a statement under penalty of perjury is unreasonable.

Tattoo your own butt instead of fantasizing about assault.

              1. A notarized affidavit commonly is under penalty of perjury. The type of ‘parchment’ or ink used does not impact its legality.

                1. Apparently you consider your skin to be “parchment” and you invite people to tattoo it without needing to get your consent.

I’m a Jew. No tattoos for me. Tattoos violate the Torah.

            2. Young,

Trumpists can’t swear before a Notary Public because what Notary would believe their oath?

              1. Jeff, for shame, I thought you said you were a lawyer.

A notary does not affirm the truthfulness of an affidavit; he only affirms that the affiant has identified himself and made the attestation. If it is untrue only the affiant is in trouble, not the notary.

                1. True, but the Notary would not believe the attestation of someone wearing a MAGA hat. You can’t blame him for refusing to allow a known liar to raise his hand in front of him.

        2. Young lies:

“Election fraud is par for the course in California apparently.”

As apparently, there’s nothing about which you won’t lie.

          1. LOL…

“Larry Elder, one of the leading Republican candidates seeking to replace Newsom if the recall succeeds, has said he believes “there might very well be shenanigans, as there were in the 2020 election.” His campaign website has a link to a “Stop CA Fraud” website where people can report suspicious voting activity or sign a petition demanding a special legislative session to investigate an election that isn’t even over. The language is lifted from a petition circulated to help former President Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the results of last year’s presidential election. …
“The Elder campaign promoted fraud claims over the weekend, pointing to a website that urges people to sign a petition saying he’s lost an election that isn’t over yet. The language in the initial paragraph and final sentence of the petition is identical to that on petitions circulated online by attorney Lin Wood backing his lawsuit to overturn Biden’s win in Georgia last year. Wood, who was recently sanctioned by a federal judge for his role in a separate lawsuit challenging Biden’s win in Michigan last year, said those petitions were drafted by staff at his organization and that he had no role in the petition that Elder circulated.”

            https://www.kron4.com/california-governor-recall/gop-pushes-unfounded-fraud-claims-before-california-recall/

        3. Of course election fraud is par for the course here in CA. I could have voted 4 times by mail with all the election materials I received for people who don’t live here. One of them passed away a decade ago.

I personally know of legal residents who voted, who didn’t know they were not supposed to.

Identity theft is the most common crime committed by illegal aliens, in order for them to get a SSN to get certain jobs. When they get their drivers license, they are automatically registered to vote. Which means they are automatically mailed voting materials.

I remember years ago watching a video of a journalist going door to door, interviewing illegal aliens who admitted they voted. Wonder if I could find it again.

It would be incredibly foolish and naive to think that voter fraud doesn’t happen on a large scale in CA.

          1. Karen says:

“It would be incredibly foolish and naive to think that voter fraud doesn’t happen on a large scale in CA.”

It would be incredibly foolish and naive to think that Trumpists wouldn’t lie on a large scale to overturn an election they lost fair and square.

            Just sayin’

          2. “I could have voted 4 times by mail with all the election materials I received for people who don’t live here.”

The question isn’t whether people can commit election fraud (they can), but whether it’s generally caught. So why do you assume that if you had voted 4 times, it wouldn’t have been caught?

“It would be incredibly foolish and naive to think that voter fraud doesn’t happen on a large scale in CA.”

It would be incredibly foolish to **assume** that voter fraud happens on a large scale in CA unless one has evidence that it occurs on a large scale.

          3. It has been explained to you many times that even if you sent in the ballots for former residents, the ballots would not have been counted, plus you would probably get arrested for voter fraud. If you are so concerned about it, why haven’t you reported this problem to your local election officials? The Trump/Republicans play on Americans’ lack of knowledge of what happens to their ballot after it is cast–whether in-person or by mail. The entire process is under bipartisan scrutiny. Mail ballots are checked against voter registration records and are checked for duplication and against in-person voting records and are rejected if the voter already voted by mail from another address or if their voter registration does not match the name and address. If someone tries to vote in-person after voting by mail whichever is the last ballot is set aside and not counted. You apparently don’t understand the process and are repeating the Big Lie about a widespread problem of voter fraud that somehow only works against Republicans. Of course, you are ignoring the fact that California has been blue for years. Where’s your proof of “large-scale” voter fraud?

Are you trying to say that an illegal alien is automatically “registered to vote” without submitting any proof of US citizenship in the State of California? I doubt this is the case. I’ve explained before the fake SSN problem, which is the fault of employers. Illegals purchase or otherwise fraudulently obtain SSNs, sometimes of deceased people, and submit these to the employer. When an employer sends in quarterly tax payments under an employee’s SSN, the employer gets a “no match” letter from the government. The employer is required to check to see whether they made an error in reporting the SSN, and if so, to correct it. However, if the employee cannot come up with any explanation for how it is an error, then they are supposed to turn in the employee for using a fraudulent SSN. The illegal just goes to another job and the process repeats. The main cause of illegal immigration is employers who give jobs to illegals, and if there were serious criminal penalties for hiring and maintaining such employees, illegal immigration would stop. Republicans won’t do this because illegal immigration benefits the wealthy hotel, restaurant and other personal-service businesses that rely on illegals because they don’t demand benefits, overtime pay, they don’t make workers comp or sexual harassment claims. They are good for the bottom line. And, these people generously donate to Republican candidates. So, Republicans put all the blame on the illegals for the problem, pandering to racism and xenophobia. I agree

      2. election a “scam.” Elder has already intimated he may not accept the results.

I listened to that part of an interview, I assume your talking about. Elder refused to dance to the tune the reporter insisted on playing. Very racist to demand a black man should perform on que. You are free to infer what you wish. But Elder never implied any such thing.
Can you find where Newsom was asked the same question?

        1. Iowan2 says:

“But Elder never implied any such thing.

I said “intimated” not “implied” idiot.

          You ask:

“Can you find where Newsom was asked the same question?”

No one would ask Newsom whether he would accept the results of the election! He is not a lying Trumpist!

    2. “the Left … denounce his main challenger on this recall as a white supremacist in black face”

I tried looking up your claim. One person, Erika Smith, wrote a column titled “Larry Elder is the black face of white supremacy,” and you imagine that somehow this is a view of “the Left” (a huge group of people) and change the meaning (but not the spelling) to “in blackface.”

LOL that you think that’s “systemic Marxism.”

    3. Olly, it is painful to watch the Left rally behind a wealthy white elitist who dined at the French Laundry while he closed so many restaurants and impoverished their owners. He kept his own winery open while many small businesses perished.

I recently saw a video of a white woman wearing a gorilla mask throwing eggs at black Larry Elder, as he toured the dystopia of a homeless camp in Venice. White woman. Gorilla mask. There would have been riots if it had been a black Democrat thus targeted.

Newsom can’t stand on his record. What would he say? That he’s doing a good job on the homeless, crime, the economy, roads? Everything is going down the toilet. All Obama could come up with after wracking his brain was to say that Larry Elder would cause an increase in Covid cases, on his commercial.

Really Obama? It would be Larry Elder causing an increase in Covid cases, and not the over one million illegal aliens, many of them sick with Covid variants that can circumvent immunity, that your buddy Joe Biden let in? If we want to talk about who’s responsible for increasing Covid, then let’s talk about Biden’s policy of letting over a million illegal aliens stream in, brining variants from their home countries, and straining our already overburdened benefits system. That was absolutely brilliant, throwing open the border during a pandemic.

      1. The LA Times just recently ran a front page story with a photo of Elder with his hand on the side of a woman’s face. The headline read: LAPD is investigating altercation involving Larry Elder at Venice homeless encampment This was a flat out lie. A video of the same scene shows the woman came up and gave Elder a hug as he got off his campaign bus.

        1. Olly says:

“This was a flat out lie.”

Now, if you can just marry that line with “Trump’s claim that the election was stolen,” then you will no longer be a Trumpist!

Come on, Olly, try! You’re almost there! There’s no hope for Karen, but you can do it!!!

          1. Have you discovered anything that Biden has done to improve this country yet? It’s been 8 months, surely he’s done something right since he got into office.

            1. Olly asks:

“Have you discovered anything that Biden has done to improve this country yet? It’s been 8 months, surely he’s done something right since he got into office.”

Yes, Biden removed Lyin’ Trump from office by stealing the election. Satisfied?

                1. I’m not a fan of Biden’s, but he’s done a number of things right since he got into office, from ramping up vaccine distribution to nominating qualified people for judgeships to rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement.

              1. from ramping up vaccine distribution
Biden never ramped up anything. Every time he set a new goal, we were already there.
Except for the 70% by 4th of July. By that time he had everything exactly where he wanted it…and everything stopped The people were tired of being lied to. All understood the problem, but Biden thought it best to double down on the lies.
But is you look at Florida from the 1st of September, cases are falling fast…supposedly Florida is doing everything wrong…but cases are going down.

                1. Just when you think the Biden administration might have reached the zenith of their incompetence…

According to the Washington Free Beacon, congressional sources who have been briefed on the Biden administration’s plans say that the White House wants to waive sanctions imposed on Assad’s regime for his war crimes in the Syrian civil war.

The deal would allow energy to be carried across Syria to Lebanon, which has been hit with a massive financial crisis that has paralyzed the country since 2019. According to an AFP report in May, the nation’s central bank is in a position where it can’t afford fuel, which means power cuts can often last for 22 hours per day.

The White House’s coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, is currently pressuring Egypt to sell gas to Lebanon. It would be transported to the country via a pipeline that runs through Jordan and Syria — which means that if the deal goes through, Assad’s cash-starved regime would stand to benefit handsomely.

      2. Karen S says:

“Newsom can’t stand on his record. What would he say? That he’s doing a good job on the homeless, crime, the economy, roads?”

Well, at least you gotta admit that he has good taste. The French Laundry is superb! Have you been? Come on, it’s ok if you have dined there. I won’t hold it against you. Don’t worry what your fellow Trumpists may think of you. Don’t self-censor. Speak FREELY!

  9. Who would apologize for escaping Appalachian poverty?

    https://fahe.org/appalachian-poverty/

Answer: Someone who thought they could parlay such an apology into career advantage. CRT is standard at universities, so such an apology yields social credit.

If she really felt ascending to the middle class was unfair, she could rectify that by donating every cent above the poverty line to the charity of her choice.

    1. In the perhaps remote chance she is sincere, maybe she has just been driven mad by the twisted logic and confused morality of the Marxist academic society she dwells in.

  10. I know I wouldn’t be taking her class. Someone should be checking her grading patterns.

I mean, they still give out grades, right?

  11. We keep sending our kids to these schools and hence keep paying the salaries for these fools. What will it take to indicate diminishing returns? i know the Obama administration made it sound like college (‘A BA is the new high school degree.’) was rubbing a magic lamp – it isn’t. Never was. It’s funny to me that nothing has actually changed in terms of the success game; just the hyperbole and how many people are literally willing to buy it. You will still succeed or fail based on your own merits.

  12. The “professor” is admitting she determines, her and others, value in society by skin color.

There should be a word for that.

  13. The professor deserves any and all scorn and ridicule she gets. What a pandering embarrassment of a human being.

  14. The real crime here is that as taxpayers we pay dearly to educate our society in so many ways. Somewhere along the way we abdicated the responsibility for that education to those who actually teach. In the beginnings we focused on real education the proved valuable in decision making, leading our businesses and governments, but that got derailed when we abdicated and allowed teachers and professors to insert personal political and cultural opinions over what is or what should be. That resulted in colleges becoming big business by offering courses and degrees in areas that are completely nonsense and serves no legitimate purpose nor benefits society in any way. That has translated into students attending college on loans and running up literally hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, getting useless degrees that will not support them with a job, not even has an industry of it’s own, and then asking the taxpayers to forget the loan altogether while they roost in government or education circles. So the cycle begins all over again. Not sure if or when as a society we will say enough is enough and take back our schools, but certainly hope it is within my lifetime. Our society is so far adrift that I’m beginning to have doubts that we can ever correct the course.

    1. Somewhere along the way we abdicated the responsibility for that education to those who actually teach.

The left has taken control of much of society. Entertainment, education, religion, even some of the sciences.
Accomplishing that, when dems are in political power, they defer to “experts” from academia, to avoid being responsible. See the covid response. Pay attention when the CDC, supposedly science based, is pushed around by the teachers union. Giving politicians a pass on leading. Pushing responsibility off to the un-elected bureaucracy.
We are being trained to bow to experts. But what we learned, experts are incapable of evaluating information outside of their knowledge sphere. We still being lied to about covid. A big authoritarian forced vaccination push, when data tells us, vaccinations are not the answer. The experts cant(won’t) explain January 8th, nor will they explain September 1st in Florida. Look at the case data(even though “casses” is a lousy data set, to make decisions from) and explain Vaccinations to the people.

We are being led by stupid experts and nobody is responsible for any decisions.

      1. Iowan2 says:

“We are being led by stupid experts and nobody is responsible for any decisions.”

Better stupid experts than lyin’ Trump.

  15. I suggest the question is why should the University continue to employ an avowed Racist?

Isn’t this Mea Culpa by the Professor straight out of the Communist “Self Criticism” school of thought?
