“This Work Terrifies Me”: Virginia Tech Professor Triggers Free Speech Debate Over “Who I Am” Statement

“I am a Caucasian cisgender female and first-generation college student from Appalachia who is of Scottish, British, and Norwegian heritage. I am married to a cisgender male, and we are middle class. While I did not ‘ask’ for the many privileges in my life: I have benefitted from them and will continue to benefit from them whether I like it or not.” At the end of her statement, Duncan Lane apologizes to students for the “inexcusable horrors within our shared history.”

The site Campus Reform further quotes Lane as saying

“This is injustice. I am and will continue to work on a daily basis to be antiracist and confront the innate racism within myself that is the reality and history of white people. I want to be better: Every day. I will transform: Every day. This work terrifies me: Every day. I invite my white students to join me on this journey. And to my students of color: I apologize for the inexcusable horrors within our shared history.”

The statement is reminiscent of other such declarations discussed earlier on this site. Last year, we discussed the controversy over the acting Northwestern Law Dean declaring publicly to “I am James Speta and I am a racist.” He was followed by Emily Mullin, executive director of major gifts, who announced, “I am a racist and a gatekeeper of white supremacy. I will work to be better.” Other faculty have been more accusatory of others like the Brandeis dean who declared “all whites are racist.”

Such statements reflect deep-seated political and social views from faculty. Those views may be deeply insulting for students or other faculty. However, I believe that they are still protected speech and reflect intellectual views protected under academic freedom.

The concern that I have is the inconsistent treatment of such controversies where conservative or contrarian faculty are given little accommodation, including a recent case at St. Joseph’s University. A conservative North Carolina professor  faced calls for termination over controversial tweets and was pushed to retire. Dr. Mike Adams, a professor of sociology and criminology, had long been a lightning rod of controversy. In 2014, we discussed his prevailing in a lawsuit that alleged discrimination due to his conservative views.  He was then targeted again after an inflammatory tweet calling North Carolina a “slave state.”  That led to his being pressured to resign with a settlement. He then committed suicide  just days before his last day as a professor.

Professor Lane is expressing her views of racism, including her own bias or privilege. Students can decide whether they wish to take her class in light of such views and whether they suggest a countervailing bias. I see nothing in the statement that suggests that Professor Lane would be biased against white students. These statements are tied to how academics view systemic racism and the bias that comes from personal privilege. Those statements should be protected — as should countervailing statements — from faculty.

      Woodward can quote what someone says in an interview with Woodward. But Woodward would have no way to quote what was said on a phone call between Milley and Li unless someone else recorded the call and leaked the transcript.

      Looks like there are a lot of quotes like this in Woodward’s new book. Are you going to assume they’re all accurate?

      Personally, unless Woodward can present audio or a confirmed transcript for all of his quotes (like he did with his quotes from Trump in his previous book), I’m not going to assume these quotes are accurate.

          I know a number of older vets who while they may not be able to conduct maneuver warfare like us youngins, the knowledge they got in the military still applies. They may not be on the front lines, but they still can contribute in other ways, like training, logistics, comms etc.

When I read “Lee’s Lieutenants’ a four volume account of the Army of Northern Virginia I was surprised to see that even back then the administrative end of war was enormous. I think General Lee and his staff spent far more time and mental effort on administrative details than they did on actual combat. Any experienced older person could pitch in and help enormously with that. The guy in the line, no matter how courageous, can’t fight without the big administrative tail that gets him weapons, ammunition, food, shelter, uniforms, training, and replacements to mention only a few things.

            One administrative reform I would like to see in the army is a requirement that all JAG lawyers serve at least a month in the front line of a combat area for awhile. Our troops are too over lawyered by manicured snowflakes.

        3. Of course election fraud is par for the course here in CA. I could have voted 4 times by mail with all the election materials I received for people who don’t live here. One of them passed away a decade ago.

          I personally know of legal residents who voted, who didn’t know they were not supposed to.

          Identity theft is the most common crime committed by illegal aliens, in order for them to get a SSN to get certain jobs. When they get their drivers license, they are automatically registered to vote. Which means they are automatically mailed voting materials.

          I remember years ago watching a video of a journalist going door to door, interviewing illegal aliens who admitted they voted. Wonder if I could find it again.

          It would be incredibly foolish and naive to think that voter fraud doesn’t happen on a large scale in CA.

It has been explained to you many times that even if you sent in the ballots for former residents, the ballots would not have been counted, plus you would probably get arrested for voter fraud. If you are so concerned about it, why haven’t you reported this problem to your local election officials? The Trump/Republicans play on Americans’ lack of knowledge of what happens to their ballot after it is cast–whether in-person or by mail. The entire process is under bipartisan scrutiny. Mail ballots are checked against voter registration records and are checked for duplication and against in-person voting records and are rejected if the voter already voted by mail from another address or if their voter registration does not match the name and address. If someone tries to vote in-person after voting by mail whichever is the last ballot is set aside and not counted. You apparently don’t understand the process and are repeating the Big Lie about a widespread problem of voter fraud that somehow only works against Republicans. Of course, you are ignoring the fact that California has been blue for years. Where’s your proof of “large-scale” voter fraud?

            Are you trying to say that an illegal alien is automatically “registered to vote” without submitting any proof of US citizenship in the State of California? I doubt this is the case. I’ve explained before the fake SSN problem, which is the fault of employers. Illegals purchase or otherwise fraudulently obtain SSNs, sometimes of deceased people, and submit these to the employer. When an employer sends in quarterly tax payments under an employee’s SSN, the employer gets a “no match” letter from the government. The employer is required to check to see whether they made an error in reporting the SSN, and if so, to correct it. However, if the employee cannot come up with any explanation for how it is an error, then they are supposed to turn in the employee for using a fraudulent SSN. The illegal just goes to another job and the process repeats. The main cause of illegal immigration is employers who give jobs to illegals, and if there were serious criminal penalties for hiring and maintaining such employees, illegal immigration would stop. Republicans won’t do this because illegal immigration benefits the wealthy hotel, restaurant and other personal-service businesses that rely on illegals because they don’t demand benefits, overtime pay, they don’t make workers comp or sexual harassment claims. They are good for the bottom line. And, these people generously donate to Republican candidates. So, Republicans put all the blame on the illegals for the problem, pandering to racism and xenophobia.   16. We keep sending our kids to these schools and hence keep paying the salaries for these fools. What will it take to indicate diminishing returns? i know the Obama administration made it sound like college (‘A BA is the new high school degree.’) was rubbing a magic lamp – it isn’t. Never was. It’s funny to me that nothing has actually changed in terms of the success game; just the hyperbole and how many people are literally willing to buy it. You will still succeed or fail based on your own merits.

  19. The real crime here is that as taxpayers we pay dearly to educate our society in so many ways. Somewhere along the way we abdicated the responsibility for that education to those who actually teach. In the beginnings we focused on real education the proved valuable in decision making, leading our businesses and governments, but that got derailed when we abdicated and allowed teachers and professors to insert personal political and cultural opinions over what is or what should be. That resulted in colleges becoming big business by offering courses and degrees in areas that are completely nonsense and serves no legitimate purpose nor benefits society in any way. That has translated into students attending college on loans and running up literally hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, getting useless degrees that will not support them with a job, not even has an industry of it’s own, and then asking the taxpayers to forget the loan altogether while they roost in government or education circles. So the cycle begins all over again. Not sure if or when as a society we will say enough is enough and take back our schools, but certainly hope it is within my lifetime. Our society is so far adrift that I’m beginning to have doubts that we can ever correct the course.

      Accomplishing that, when dems are in political power, they defer to “experts” from academia, to avoid being responsible. See the covid response. Pay attention when the CDC, supposedly science based, is pushed around by the teachers union. Giving politicians a pass on leading. Pushing responsibility off to the un-elected bureaucracy.
      We are being trained to bow to experts. But what we learned, experts are incapable of evaluating information outside of their knowledge sphere. We still being lied to about covid. A big authoritarian forced vaccination push, when data tells us, vaccinations are not the answer. The experts cant(won’t) explain January 8th, nor will they explain September 1st in Florida. Look at the case data(even though “casses” is a lousy data set, to make decisions from) and explain Vaccinations to the people.

      We are being led by stupid experts and nobody is responsible for any decisions.
