AAUP Journal Solicits Papers on Conservative Intolerance on Campuses

The number of republican, conservative and libertarian faculty members have plummeted at most schools in the last twenty years. Many top law schools have only a couple conservative faculty members and we have discussed the startling increase in attacks on faculty, trustees, and students (including student publications, editors and columnists) over dissenting views on subjects ranging from critical race theory to police abuse. Nevertheless, the American Association of University Professors’ Journal of Academic Freedom is calling for papers on intolerance on campuses but only by conservatives. The call seems to be an effort to come up with a narrative to deflect from the complaints over the rising orthodoxy and intolerance on our campuses.

The AAUP journal is only interested in examples of “thought control by the Right, the whitewashing of historical narratives, and specific assaults on academic freedom that cut across the K–12 and higher education sectors.” It bases this one-sided solicitation on the “recent upsurge in white ethnonationalism” and “attempt[s] to reenergize white-settler narratives of the nation’s founding while vilifying histories that call attention to slavery, oppression, and dispossession.”  They also cite criticism of the 1619 project and the recent controversy over the hiring of Nikole Hannah-Jones, who have pushed for advocacy journalism that is opposed by many of us.

Rather than study viewpoint intolerance on campuses generally, the journal is calling only for research that supports a narrative that our schools are actually under the yoke of conservative ideology. It is a bizarre claim that has appeared recently in other academic publications. Recently, a Massachusetts history professor declared universities “right-wing institutions.” I have personally been in meetings where such claims were made about the relative absence of liberal scholars on faculties and dominance of conservative ideology at law schools. I once heard a law dean note with a straight face that she was pleasantly surprised to meet a liberal constitutional law scholar for a change.

We have recently discussed a couple examples (here and here) of actions taken against liberal speakers on campus, which were denounced as attacks on free speech values.  However, it borders on the delusional to suggest that our campuses are being controlled by conservative ideology or faculty members. We previously discussed a Gallup poll showing ninety percent of Pomona students said that they did not feel free to speak openly or freely. Pomona is one of the most liberal institutions in the world with a tiny fraction of conservative faculty.

For many of us in the free speech community, it does not matter which side is opposing the expression of viewpoints. I have defended extremist views on academic freedom grounds like those of University of Rhode Island professor Erik Loomis, who has defended the murder of a conservative protester and said that he saw “nothing wrong” with such acts of violence. (Loomis also writes for the site “Lawyers, Guns, and Money.”) I have defended faculty who have made similarly disturbing comments “detonating white people,” denouncing policecalling for Republicans to suffer,  strangling police officerscelebrating the death of conservativescalling for the killing of Trump supporters, supporting the murder of conservative protesters and other outrageous statements.

The AAUP journal embodies the raw bias that has taken hold on our journals and on our campuses. It is soliciting articles that confirm a view that academic freedom is being threatened by the shrinking numbers of conservative faculty and students in our schools. To secure such opportunities, you must first confirm that you will reach the correct conclusion.

The  AAUP was once a staunch defender of academic freedom. As I discuss in an upcoming law review article, the AAUP was heavily influenced by the writings of Roscoe Pound who led the fight for free speech on campuses at a time when it was the conservatives who were failing to actively protect those on the left in raising dissenting voices. He railed against the view that professors should remain silent on public controversies and objected that “we are getting very intolerant in this country of even necessary freedom of speech.” Pound’s view of free speech would be reflected in the first Declaration of Principles of Academic Freedom in 1915 by the AAUP. The Declaration stressed the protection of free speech and the guarantee of “unfettered discussion” free of the “prescribed inculcation of a particular opinion upon a controverted question.”

  1. What a laughable concept for a paper.

    So this is their play.

They’ve faced enormous backlash on CRT, which teaches America is irretrievably racist and everyone is born racist oppressors or oppressed, based on skin color. Many historians of all stripes debunked the ludicrous 1619 Project.

So what do they do? They target critics as … wait for it… racist white nationalists. Of course they do. They see racists everywhere. They hear dog whistles not even dogs can hear.

    1. So this is their play.

Their play on CRT is similar to Fauci’s play on gain-of-function; deny by definition what is factually apparent.

      1. It’s just a small part, Olly. Deny, deny, deny every and all double-standards, all harm they intentionally, knowingly inflict on others without regret, without any second thought that one day, sooner than they will ever know, it will all come crashing down around them. Then again, Leftists will likely deny that when it happens, too. Denial, virtue-signaling, and name calling is really all they’ve ever had going for them.

        1. They’ll be like the guy standing among the ashes of his home saying, at least I got rid of that damned spider!

      2. “. . . deny by definition what is factually apparent.”

That and they throw up a smoke screen: “We are not teaching the theory of CRT” — which is probably true.

Instead, they are applying key elements of that theory to the *practice* of teaching, e.g., in children’s books, history lessons, grading and rankings (see “detracking”), syllabi choices, teacher training, reading lists, the language they use and that they allow children to use, etc., ad nauseam,

Hollywood’s communists used the same smoke screen. When communists infiltrated Hollywood, they swore that they were not pushing Marxist theory in movies. Yet when you look at the key elements of their movies (e.g., dialogue, theme, characterization), you can see communism in practice all over their movies.

        1. Agreed Sam. It doesn’t matter what they’re teaching is called. What matters is what they’re teaching.

        2. Sam declares:

“Hollywood’s communists used the same smoke screen. When communists infiltrated Hollywood, they swore that they were not pushing Marxist theory in movies. Yet when you look at the key elements of their movies (e.g., dialogue, theme, characterization), you can see communism in practice all over their movies.”

Oh brother. You want to name just a few of these supposedly Communistic movies? I’m sure you can’t, but if you can, I need a good laugh.

          1. “name just a few of these supposedly Communistic movies?”

Until this: “I’m sure you can’t” — I would have.

            1. There are a number of them but “Grapes of Wrath” most certainly favorably mentions Communists by name in words spoken by Fonda near Sunshine Camp.

              1. Silberman is trying to use the same tactic the Left is using to deny CRT is taught in K-12 public schools. This Indiana administrator explains very clearly how they’ve been trying to hide it from unwary parents. It’s the difference between curriculum and pedagogy. Until the Covid lockdowns forced children to be taught via zoom classes, parents only knew about the published curriculum. It was during these zoom classes that they discovered the pedagogy being implemented to teach the curriculum.

                  1. He also brought up in another interview that they are now implementing Ethno-mathematics. Objectivity is apparently racist. This author sums up this theory in a very logical, likely considered racist point:

This isn’t to say that everyone pushing “ethnomathematics” understands this agenda. Most are confused themselves, though often very hostile. In fact, were they not so confused, if they thought a bit, they might realize that if everything is relative, then their new teaching model is relative, too — and therefore meaningless.

                    https://thenewamerican.com/the-lefts-ethnomathematics-expecting-the-right-answer-is-white-supremacy/

                1. Sam says:

“Grapes of Wrath” — along with “Song of Russia,” and countless others.”

According to Wiki, “The positive portrayal of the Soviet Union in the film is clearly linked to the wartime alliance of the Soviet Union and the U.S.”

HUAC cited 2 other noted examples of pro-Soviet films, not “countless” other films as you lie.

                  1. You gotta love the keyboard scholars whose “research” stops with Wiki and (parts of) HUAC. And whose ability to analyze the theme of a film is to copy and paste a sentence from Wiki.

If one is serious about trying to understand, start with a dedicated study of America’s “Red Decade,” which actually was more than one decade.

                    “Chicken”

Seriously?! Could you get any more childish?

                    1. Sam,

I have other interests than studying the Second Red Scare. I don’t fear Communism, Marxism or Socialism. If you must know, I fear Trumpism.

              2. Young says:

“There are a number of them but “Grapes of Wrath” most certainly favorably mentions Communists by name in words spoken by Fonda near Sunshine Camp.”

That’s a great movie. It’s an Ode to the Forgotten Man. Trumpism is predicated on the Forgotten Man in Flyover country betrayed by the Coastal Educated Elites.

            2. “name just a few of these supposedly Communistic movies?”

Until this: “I’m sure you can’t” — I would have.”

    2. I agree 100%, Karen S. Thank you for a spot-on comment. As you rightly observied, “Many historians of all stripes debunked the ludicrous 1619 Project.” Bingo.

I think we’re seeing why there are only about three sectors where the Hard Left can find gainful employment without getting fired later: (1) academe; (2) government; and (3) non-profits. They couldn’t succeed in a for-profit environment if their lives–or their jobs–depended on it.

      Thanks again.

  2. I think we need to recognize that violent rhetoric from the Left has become extreme and dangerous. We might like free speech but now it’s time to denounce speech like “detonating white people,” …. calling for Republicans to suffer, strangling police officers, celebrating the death of conservatives, calling for the killing of Trump supporters, supporting the murder of conservative protesters and other outrageous statements.” The Dems and the Left are encouraging violence and that is no longer legal speech ….

    1. The suburban woman says:

“I think we need to recognize that violent rhetoric from the Left has become extreme and dangerous.”

      Like the Trumpist who asked,
‘When do we get to use the guns?’ during a recent Turning Point USA rally.

      https://amp.azcentral.com/amp/8570812002

      1. Jeff, so all Democrats own:

College professors saying all white people deserve to die – soooo many examples, such as Johnny Eric Williams who wrote “let them f(ing) die”
fantasizing about feeding MAGA hat wearing kids into a wood chipper
offering a bounty to anyone who would assault one of the Covington kids
Fantasizing about throwing Baron Trump into a cage of pedophiles
riots, looting, arson, burning of police precinct, CHOP/CHAZ and it’s ensuing murders and rapes
spiraling murder rate after defunding police
lying that Republican voting laws are voter suppression, “Jim Crow on steroids” or “Jim Eagle”, when they do nothing of the sort, in order to encourage bigotry against conservatives

These weren’t crazy people on subways or in a meeting. These are the President, professors, news anchors, pundits, well-known singers, actors, and actresses…Household Names.

By your own reasoning, your party owns this. The difference, of course, is while the man’s comments were immediately denounced by Kirk, and are not endorsed in any way by the mainstream right, the extremism and violence of the Left has been embraced and normalized. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ teams bailed out rioters and looters, and Harris said the riots should continue.

Own it, maniac. Your party has normalized fantasizing about conservatives being murdered or assaulted, including kids.

        1. Karen yells:

“Own it, maniac. Your party has normalized fantasizing about conservatives being murdered or assaulted, including kids.”

Democrats can only fantasize because Republicans own nearly all the weapons. You are the ones who form all the militia groups. You don’t intend to just fantasize killing. When there will be a murderous insurrection, you know it will be led by Trumpists.

          1. Actually, Jeff, Democrats killed and assaulted a great many people in their reign of terror during the riots and arson, as well as at CHOP/CHAZ. And highly placed Democrats including Biden and Harris condoned it, even bailing out some of the violent criminals.

            Own it.

Oh, and I don’t fantasize about killing anyone. I leave that to Democrat professors, musicians, actors, and news anchors.

            1. 🤣 Silberman is fantasizing about street-fighting you. Well done Karen! It proves these Leftists will always default to their Marxist roots when they are crushed in the war of ideas.

                1. Young says:

“Whoopie Cushion vs Cavalry. I think I know how it will end.”

I missed Whoopie Cushion! Glad it’s back.

        2. Karen S: you, an uneducated devoted Trump disciple, who has repeated the lies you heard on Fox about that there wasn’t any insurrection, that no Capitol Police were injured, and so on, have the temerity to call someone you disagree with a “maniac”? The Democratic Party doesn’t “fantasize” about anything other than getting America back to some normal level of functioning after the trash fire known as Trump devastated the successful economy inherited from Barak Obama, allowed a pandemic to get out of control, causing unnecessary death and illness and which caused the country to mostly shut down for over a year, We are still playing catch-up, and will be for some time. And, you aren’t a “conservative”, either. The reason blind disciples to Trump aren’t conservatives has been explained to you repeatedly, so you either ignore the facts, or choose to keep on misrepresenting the truth, which is that real, recognized, traditional and respected conservatives don’t want any part of Trump or any of his devotees. Just ask Rick Miller, Steve Schmidt, George F. Will and George Conway why. Trump is a liar, cheater, womanizer, racist, misogynist, xenophobe and Islamophobe and conservatives disavow such characteristics. There is no “extremism Left”, either. People who embrace violence are not endorsed by Democrats, so stop lying about this. This is just more garbage you imbibed from Fox, OAN, News Max, Breitbart or other alt-right media that you rely on for your daily affirmation.

      2. is this “jeffsilberman” paid to monitor comments on this blog and denounce any and all that do not support his left-wing nonsense?

        1. Anon says:

“is this “jeffsilberman” paid to monitor comments on this blog and denounce any and all that do not support his left-wing nonsense?”

          And paid plenty! Suckers!

    2. Suburban Woman:

      You’re right.

The Democrats have been gaslighting us, that we don’t see the spiraling crime from defunding police, that we didn’t see a year of riots, looting, and arson. We’re told that stores are lying when they cut businesses or close due to out of control shoplifting in CA. Cops don’t even arrest most shoplifters, since the felony threshold was raised to $950. The Los Angeles DA Gascon released a memo of all the crimes his office would decline to prosecute:

      trespass
      disturbing the peace
driving without a valid license or on a suspended
      criminal threats
      drug and paraphernalia posession
      minor in possession of alcohol
      drinking in public
under the influence of controlled substance
      public intoxication
      loitering
      loitering to commit prostitution
      resisting arrest

      https://da.lacounty.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/SPECIAL-DIRECTIVE-20-07.pdf

Gascon eliminated bail his first day in office.

Gascon is not an outlier. He shoehorns nicely in the Democrat Party, which has veered so far left as to be unrecognizable.

Schools are teaching kids they are born bad if they’re white. Kids are getting the impression that slavery only existed here, and that the only people enslaved were blacks by white people. Meanwhile, over 40% of students are not at grade level in reading and math.

Yet when we object to the rampant, nationwide violence, the rising crime, the racist rhetoric, and the overall extremism, we get attacked.

This is why I never quite understood the Democrats’ outrage at Trump’s rude Tweets. This is the party that’s called conservatives racist Nazis, who’s said conservatives need to die, that we’ve got Neanderthal thinking or we’re dog-faced pony soldiers. They’ve fantasized about feeding the Covington Catholic school kids screaming, MAGA hat first into a wood chipper, they’ve posed with Trump’s bloody severed head in effigy, made rap songs where Trump was shot, said it’s been a long time since an actor assassinated a president or they dream about blowing up the White House. They’ve begged the military to engage in a coup on Trump. They’ve called Trump a Russian asset. They want their victims acquiescent. They have no leg to stand on to preach civility.

      1. Karen: you really need to stop. You don’t know the meaning of the word “gaslight”, which is the title of a film starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. I hear this word misused all of the time on alt-right media, so I know that’s where you got it, and those you rely on for daily affirmation don’t know what it means either. I’ve explained to you previously that you are misusing this word. And, Honey, there’s no “us vs. the Democrats” operating here, either. This is just part of the propaganda campaign by the alt/right media to convince you that Trump disciples like you represent the majority of Americans, which you don’t. . Just more efforts by the Trump/Republican Party to divide Americans against each other. And, the Democrat Party has not veered “far Left”, either. Another lie. You aren’t qualified to comment on anything because you constantly feed on the lies put out by your alt/right media sources.

You absolutely need to stop lying immediately about schools teaching children CRT. That is absolutely not true, no matter how many times Hannity lies about it. And there’s no “we” objecting to any of the things you claim, either. Trump’s tweets weren’t just “rude”: they were outlandish lies, the biggest one being the Big Lie that he just won’t stop telling. He used Twitter to incite the Trump insurrection, based on the Big Lie, which is why he was de-platformed. The Democrat Party never called any REAL conservatives Nazis. You aren’t a “conservative”, either. The only one who attempted to have the military engage in a coup was Trump. Trump did collude with Russians to cheat his way into the White House.

  3. Dennis says:

“For white conservatives, like Hawley, anything that challenges white male dominance is a threat and must be defeated…”

It is just like Conservatives who demonize anyone who criticizes Israeli policy towards Palestinians as “anti-semites.” Anything that challenges Israeli policy is a threat and must be defeated. Not even Jews are spared being accused of anti-Semitism. The reason given to explain the concept of an “anti-Semitic Jew” is even more preposterous- these are self-hating Jews! Naturally.

People on the Right as well as the Left accuse the other of hatred in order to silence the other. Leftists accuse Republicans of racism when they want to limit immigration. Accusing someone of prejudice is the nuclear option of argumentation, and it is deployed at every opportunity.

It’s too bad Turley will never respond to your comments. They are well-taken. He is not teaching us; he is simply lecturing us until he will respond to some of our questions. Turley would never be able to get away with this one-sided dialogue in his law classroom. From his paying students he has no choice but to listen to them and respond to their good speech.

    Not so here- it’s a one-way street.

    1. There are rare instances when people conflate a lack of support for Israel for antisemitism.

But most conservatives – most people do not do that.

I would further note that there is a strong correlation between actual anti-semitism and poor support for Israel.
They may not be the same thing, but the strongly tend to appear together.

Members of “the squad” are anti-Israel, they are also called anti-Semites – and though they frequently make anti-Israel remarks, they also have made clearly anti-semetic remarks.

But there is more to this correlation than random chance.

Israel may not be the perfect nation, but they are clearly the most sane nation in the Mideast.
And most of the anti-Israel remarks are idiocy. There are Arabs and Palestinians that live in Israel, for the most part they are treated well – and not as 2nd class citizens. But a large number of Palestinians live in the Palestinian territories – which if you treat them as part of israel are living under bad circumstances. of course the question is whose fault is that ? The Palestinians have had enough autonomy for most of my lifetime to make the Palestinian territories a decent place to live. But they have failed.
The adjacency of Israel and the Palestinian territories does not require Israel to make the west bank or Gaza work.

In fact the Palestinian territories could trivially be the nation of Palestine – all that is required is for the Palestinians to accept that Israel actually exists.

Nearly all the conflict between Israel and Palestinians is the result of bad conduct by the Palestinians.

People who somehow think the Palestinians are victims of Israel rather than victims of their own actions are idiots.

And anti-Semites tend to be idiots.

    2. Can you give an example of a white conservative accusing a jew of being anti-semetic ?

Every bat$hit crazy thing – exists somewhere, but this is not one that I have seen.

Have you seen Hawley or Cruz of whatever other consequential white conservative voices there are accusing a jew of being an anti-semite ?

Frankly there is another layer of idiocy in your argument is that you – and the left are constantly accusing the same white conservatives of being anti-semites.

Generally those on the left are incredibly confused about antisemitism – it is one of the most obvious examples that the left does not even listen to what it says.

We had the left label Trump – and of course all whit conservatives as anti-semites after the Tree of Life shooting – despite the fact that the shooter made clear his dislike of Trump. Trump actually visited the tree of life synagogue after the horrific event. and having a daughter who has converted to Judaism and married to a jew, who has a prominent position in the family – does not change the lefts accusations of anti-semitism, and then we get Biden claiming to have visited the Tree of life after the shooting when he did not.

To those on the left – everyone on the right is an anti-semite – without any requirement for evidence, and despite clear contradictory evidence. While those on the left can not be anti-semites – because they are on the left no matter how actually anti-semetic their remarks are.

I am sure there are a few anti-semites on the right. There are plenty on the left.

    3. People on the right as well as people not on the right – pretty much anyone not on the left accuse those on the left of being hateful – because they are. And because they are horrible hypocrits.

    4. The 9th commandment does not say – thou shalt not bear witness.

It says thous shalt not bear false witness.

There is nothing wrong with accusing people of things that are true.
      FALSE accusations are immoral.

  4. Well, if all of this seems even a little bit weird, then you’re probably a racist. Our friends at The Babylon Bee have put together a guide that should help those that are struggling to understand themselves:

RACE IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT created by white people to excuse their oppression of black and brown bodies. It’s also the most important thing about you.

In short, race is nothing, yet it is everything. Don’t try to make sense of it. Do you have a Ph.D.? Have you published peer-reviewed papers? Didn’t think so. So sit down and learn something!

Unions, most certainly teachers and professors unions, are communist entities; conservative and patriotic Americans have been squeezed out.

The communist goal for education is indoctrination and propagandization of America’s youth.

It’s tale is told in the McAwful candidacy in Virginia.

The consequences will be truly McAwful for communists (liberals, progressives, socialists, democrats, RINOs) in America if the American Sleeping Giant is awakened.

  6. The AAUP is requesting articles on the “sabotaged hiring of Nikole Hannah-Jones,” “doublespeak” and “strategies for truthful pedagogies and content on racism, racial inequality, and oppression,” as well as “features of recent Republican ‘memory laws’,” and “attacks on Black history and CRT and ethnic and gender studies . . . .” — topics which strongly suggest that they are soliciting essays which will promote one agenda by discrediting another, especially given the loaded and tendentious heuristic language (which is too often employed to mystify rather than enlighten).
The assumption clearly is that the hiring of Hannah-Jones was “sabotaged,” that there are such things as “truthful pedagogies,” and that there are widespread “attacks on Black history and CRT and ethnic and gender studies.” So this is an appeal to a particular group to grind out propaganda, not an invitation to the wider scholarly community to engage in something resembling dialogue.
History is much richer than this meager list of grievance topics, whose authors clearly live in a hermetically sealed intellectual bubble.
The historians who taught me were not a gaggle of aggrieved fantasists; they embraced a range of approaches, from left to right, and they used a variety of approaches to study a great number of topics, from social and cultural history to diplomatic and political.
The people who wrote this call for papers are not scholars; they are ideologues who might benefit from reading histories written before the “linguistic turn.” Then again, as Eric Hoffer observed, true believers have difficulty with reality.

    1. Old guy quips:

“Then again, as Eric Hoffer observed, true believers have difficulty with reality.”

Kinda like Trumpists who have difficulty with the reality that the election was not stolen? I wonder what Eric Hoffer would make of those true believers….

      2. Why should anyone believe claims about elections from the people who spent the past 4 years believing the collusion delusion.

Honestly, while I found Trump’s fawning over Putin during the 2016 campaign grating and stupid, there was not a single moment that the idea of Putin helping Trump was not obviously bat $hit crazy.

Long before any of us knew that The Clinton had paid a russian agent to manufacture garbage about Trump and the Trump campaign, and sell it to what is either an incredibly stupid or gullible FBI, it was nuts to beleive that Putin would support much less try to influence the election in favor of the candidate whose policies would all be directly harmful to Russia.

But apparently YOU were unable to reach that obvious observation.
While I will cede – that is not Proof. it is still incredibly rare for even despots like Putin to harm their own country because the person seeking to do their country harm is fawning over them.

Some people grasped that the collusion delusion was nonsense the first time they heard it.
Some people needed absolutely every single dot to be connected back to Hillary.
And some people STILL are buying the collusion delusion nonsense.

If I were to contemplate who to believe about the 2020 election, I would probably start with those who were right from the start about the collusion delusion. Who were right about the misconduct of the Bidens arround the world and Ukraine. Who understood that Hunter Bidens laptop was not “Russian disinformation”.
And who did not think that sending women, black men, and identifiable democratic operatives to a Younkin rally pretending to be White Supremacists was a good idea.

I would also tend to beleive that those who have lied over and over and over, and continued to lie long after they had been caught,
Who told silly lies that those people were also capable of lawlessness and fraud.

      3. It is 1am Wednesday.

Yet problems have been reported in Fairfax county and they are busily recounting the vote there.

If in the wee hours of the night Faiffax county manufactures the 100,000 votes that MacAulffie needs to win – do you honestly beleive that any sane person in the country is going to beleive it ?

In fact – do you really think that most of us beleive the GOP sweep in VA is actually as close as the results indicate ?

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

  7. Jonathan: You have misstated the purpose of the AAUP solicitation. It is not, as you say, “calling only for research that support a narrative that our schools are actually under the yoke of conservative ideology”. Conservative professors are not being attacked. The AAUP is talking about how conservative GOP controlled legislatures around the country are passing laws to prevent the teaching of anything vaguely related to CRT. AAUP specifically mentions Idaho, Florida and Texas–states controlled by the GOP. I should add that in many states there are local school board elections today. In Kansas white conservatives are attempting to take control of school boards to prohibit teaching about the history of racial oppression and how it still pervades many institutions. These conservatives don’t want even “diversity and inclusion” taught and are also attacking masking mandates in schools.

Next door in Missouri conservative GOP Senator Josh Hawley is leading the charge to defend white privilege. In a speech (“The Future of the American Man”) to a right-wing white nationalist audience in Orlando on Sunday Hawley launched into a bizarre defense of white men and boys, accusing “the Left” of wanting to usher in a “world without men” as part of a broader effort to “deconstruct America”. Hawley complained “the Left” believes that “America is a systematically racist, structurally oppressive, hopelessly patriarchal kind of place”. He went on: “Our boys are treated as an illness in need of a cure…Manhood, it seems, is a disease to be defeated”. For white conservatives, like Hawley, anything that challenges white male dominance is a threat and must be defeated..

You have completely distorted the purpose of the AAUP solicitation. It’s not about silencing conservative voices on campuses. It’s about, as the AAUP states, “white ethnonationalism” in the US. An attempt to “reenergize white-settler narratives of the nation’s founding while vilifying histories that call attention to slavery, oppression and dispossession”. That’s the part you missed in your mission to defend the vanishing breed of conservative faculty on university campuses.

    1. Dennis….none so blind as those who refuse to see.

“It’s about, as the AAUP states, “white ethnonationalism” in the US. An attempt to “reenergize white-settler narratives of the nation’s founding while vilifying histories that call attention to slavery, oppression and dispossession”.

Did you actually read what you posted before you hit the Enter Key?

There are some very big assumptions and assertions of fact that just do not pass any kind of test for objectivity in that quote alone….much less the rest of your post.

When I see buzz words and jingoistic phrases straight from the Leftist Play Book….big Red Flags (the symbol of the Communist Party you may recall) begin to wave and snap in the hot air whistling around.

Ever take a Logic class or a Debate Class…..as you sure seem to skip right over the rudiments of both areas of study…..as well as the topic extant,

I trade you one Josh Hawley for folks like Sheila Jackson Lee, every talking head on MSNBC, or Nancy Pelosi you wish to offer in return.

  8. Rather than study viewpoint intolerance on campuses generally, the journal is calling only for research that supports a narrative that our schools are actually under the yoke of conservative ideology.

The purge continues. Whatever remnants of conservative thought exists within the ranks of colleges and universities will no doubt be outed through this study. Academia, military, law enforcement, firefighters, first responders, medical field, and on and on. It’s not Stalin’s Great Purge…yet.

    1. Olly plays the “Victim Card” (again):

“The purge continues. Whatever remnants of conservative thought exists within the ranks of colleges and universities will no doubt be outed through this study. Academia, military, law enforcement, firefighters, first responders, medical field, and on and on. It’s not Stalin’s Great Purge…yet”

Well, let’s face it, after Trumpism, America has to “de-Trumpify” the country not unlike the Americans had to de-Nazify Germany after the war.

      Just sayin’

      1. Does not look like Virginia is “de-trumpifying”.

Democrats do not even appear to be safe in NJ.

      2. What is “trumpism” ?

        An economy that works
        Low inflation
rising wages and employment for the working class.
the lowest illegal immigration in decades.
The first peace deals in the mid east since Carter
The decline of Russia as a super power.
The decline of russian influence in Europe
        Cheap and abundant energy
For those who stupidly care about the production of plant food a decline in US emissions of CO2.
        Lower taxes,
Chinese ambitions contained by creating a coalition between the US India, Japan, Taiwan, Austrailia, Vietnam and the Philipines.
The US will share a new massive airbase with japan within a few hundred killometers of China rather than the 900KM distance from Okinawa.
Subic Bay is being re-opened to US fleets and carriers substantially reducing the cost of containing China.

And the country has certainly “de-trumpified” since 2020.

        1. What is Trumpism?

          Bragging that he can: “Grab ’em by the puxxy”–comment made when wife was just about or just had delivered a baby; consorts with porn actress and nude models, pays them off;

Draft-dodger who insults a genuine military hero like John McCain; won’t go to WWII military cemetery because drizzle will destroy pompadour hairdo and then lying about it

Lying about all sorts of things based on ego: “Mexico will pay to build the wall”; “factories will return to America”; “better health care plan at lower cost than Obamacare”

Taking credit for a successful economy created by his predecessor from the ashes left behind by a Republican predecessor

          Lying about a “lowest illegal immigration in decades”; caging brown people, calling them “animals, murderers, rapists and criminals” and caging children like animals; pandering to racism against illegals; calling Neo Nazis and White Supremacists “fine people” then trying to lie about it;

          Calling the formalization of a trade agreement a “peace deal”–no war or conflict was solved by the “deal”, and the parties were already freely trading–these “agreement” were done to try to win a Nobel Peace Prize because Trump was jealous that Obama was awarded one; and, it was Jared Kushner who formalized the trade, not fatso; and, the parties were not in any active conflict at the time; moved the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem to curry favors and campaign contributions from wealthy Jews;

Taking credit for Obama making the US energy-independent

          Pandemic allowed to get out of control by lying and downplaying it because it made him look bad, resulting in at least 130,000 unnecessary COVID deaths, which caused the economy to crater–worst recession since the Great Depression, which America is still reeling from, making our economy and public health weaker;

Lying about Russia and China being under “control”

Insults other world leaders: “Little Rocket Man”

Cheated his way into office with the help of Russia,

Started the first insurrection in US History because he couldn’t accept the fact that he lost in the most-secure election in US History; fired heads of Cypersecurity, U.S. Intelligence and AG when they refuted his lies about nonexistent election fraud; still won’t shut up or go away, continues to lie and stir dissent, trying to turn Americans against one another, tries to cause Americans to question election security and foments unnecessary worry about the safety and efficacy of vaccines, lies about ineffective and dangerous Hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID,

          Impeached twice; 48 U.S. Senators voted to remove him from office;

Only legislative “victory” was a tax-cut deeply skewed to benefit the wealthiest Americans

This country is still trying to recover economically and in health from Trump and his utter incompetence, lying and the divisiveness he caused for the sake of his massive ego. Republicans are trying to blame Biden for inflation and other problems we are facing that Trump caused. Biden inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression, supply chains were down due to illness and reduced consumer demand, and Republicans are trying to leverage the leftover failures of Trump for political reasons while they refuse to even attempt to work with Democrats on passing bills to benefit American families. And, yet, disciples like John Say and Karen S. continue to believe.

  9. Terms like conservative or republicans do not mean what they once meant, not in the age of Trump. Trump and his cult have hijacked the terms conservative and republican, it’s a shame for sure, but very true. Ask Liz Cheney. And they are NOT republicans or conservative, and have proven it for the world to see.

    1. Fishwings says:

“Ask Liz Cheney. And they are NOT republicans or conservative, and have proven it for the world to see.”

Ask George Will, Peggy Noonan, etc., and the multitude of intellectual thought leaders with unimpeachable Conservative credentials who have rejected Trumpism root and branch.

  10. I get newsletters from The Chronicle of Higher Education. I’ve seen similar columns there that coincide with the AAUP research topic

The AAUP was on the right side during the 50’s. Shameful that they are on the wrong side now.

    1. Whig says:

“The AAUP was on the right side during the 50’s. Shameful that they are on the wrong side now.”

      The times they are a-changin’

      -Dylan

  11. So the AAUP has decided that CRT and the 1619 project are Truth, and nothing more needs to be said. Just shove it down their throats, without discussion or debate. When ever has one single “theory” ever been mandated in academia? When has there ever been such blatant mass intimidation of critics of any idea? When has the AAUP ever before so blatantly turned colleague against colleague? This is the call for a purge. This is socialism at its basest.

    1. Giocon asks:

“When has there ever been such blatant mass intimidation of critics of any idea?

When Conservative Legislatures passed laws restricting the teaching of Darwinism long ago. When that policy didn’t succeed, they tried mandating the teaching of Creationism as “alternative facts.” After that too didn’t fly, finally trying to claim that the teaching of “Intelligent Design” wasn’t that old time religion; rather, it was just “raising questions” about the so-called “missing link” in Evolution!

      Hogwash.

      1. Just to be clear – your dismissal of all challenges to darwinian evolution as hairbrained is off the mark.

Real science is constantly challenging itself.

Regardless, there are numerous challenges to Darwinian evolution. that are as of yet unanswered.

In time we may get answers to these.
Or darwinian evolution may have to be altered to correct for those problems.
But the most challenging problem is that of DNA -and that is because everything about DNA implies intelligence.
And the only evolutionary stepping stone to DNA is RNA and that does not address the problems that these pose for Darwinian evolution.

This source is relatively old – and there have been many changes both in the argument and in the counter argument in the past 20 years.

But the specifics of the mathematical improbability of the evolutionary development of proteins in the time that the universe has existed
is still unsolved. Science has made some advances that appear to reduce the degree of improbabilty.
But other developements have actually increased the mathematical improbability.

        https://www.cs.unc.edu/~plaisted/ce/blocked.oct01.html

I would note that there is another challenge to evolution – or more accurately support to the the idea – it is not really a developed theory, of intelligent design. This comes from developments all the way back to Watson and Crick and DNA.

DNA is essentially the biological equivalent of a computer program to create life.
Computer programs are created by intelligence. But there is no known intelligence that existed at the time that DNA came into being.

While biologically RNA precedes DNA – the nature and complexity of RNA does not alter the problem.

  12. https://youtu.be/wHpt4gB0-Mw
Here is the former head of the KGB discussing the world’s dismay at the insanity of the bizarre woke movement.

True truth has nothing to fear from vigorous debate. Then why the aversion on campuses to discussing different perspectives?

We are one step shy of Jonestown.

  13. Thank you, Professor Turley, for bringing this absurd exercise in intellectual dishonesty to our attention. I am struck by the smugness of these intellectual elites. These folks are likely the same folks who march to the drumbeat of “diversity and inclusion.” What happened to diversity of thought?

    1. Cassidy asks:

“What happened to diversity of thought?”

      It’s coming. Wait for it.

  14. I believe the Babylon Bee’s Seth Dillon was the one who stated that, given the news of the day, it has become increasingly difficult to write satire.

  15. Lefties are remarkably adept at manipulation, deceit, and pretending that conservatives are guilty of Lefty sins.

Look at the Lefty posters on this site – the barefaced liar Natacha, the manchild Anonymous, and others whose primary argument is either “But Trump…” or “Turley/Fox”.

Lefties don’t admit the truth; they lie and deflect.

    Ugly people.

    1. Monument says:

“Lefties don’t admit the truth; they lie and deflect.

      Ugly people.”

We love you too! Come on!

Underneath your hard granite facade, Colorado, I know you have a soft spot- admittedly you have to blast for it….

  16. This is the death-knell to academic freedom. The AAUP has made a tragic mistake in taking such an anti-scientific, partisan and biased position on the culture wars. The topics they’re looking for (below) prove that they already have their answers, they just need to fill in the blanks. What little may be left of collegiality on campuses will be history after this gets published.

“we are especially interested in the following topics:
    • book and idea bans, legislative efforts, and other forms of censorship
    • the 1619 Project, the 1776 Project, and the sabotaged hiring of Nikole Hannah-Jones
    • doublespeak, academic free speech, and education about racial inequalities
    • strategies for truthful pedagogies and content on racism, racial inequality, and oppression
    • features of recent Republican “memory laws”
    • attacks on Black history and CRT and ethnic and gender studies”

    1. Giocon says:

“This is the death-knell to academic freedom. The AAUP has made a tragic mistake in taking such an anti-scientific, partisan and biased position on the culture wars.”

      What are you afraid of?

As Turley says the more speech, the merrier!

You can debate the results of this good speech by AAUP with your own. Let the speeches fly, and we’ll have one big well-informed debate club!

  17. No problem with this….it shall be a very short paper with not much content if it is done with any level of scholarly standard.

Therein lies the problem…we know the Left has no standards.

What I suggest is Professor Turley under take a very similar research effort….but expand it to intolerance of opposing views by both Liberal and Conservative people and universities.

Lay it all out and show the disparity between the number of attacks from each side….do it with close attention to the standards that are considered acceptable.

Use the same definitions and factors to evaluate each incident or occurrence….and be impartial.

Then listen to the Left complain, cry, rant, and pitch tantrums.

As Professor Turley has stated many times…..the cure for bad speech is good speech.

Show them a good time Professor….turn this around on them and use it in your future defenses of Free Speech.

    1. Ralph says:

“As Professor Turley has stated many times…..the cure for bad speech is good speech.”

Exactly! More effective than playing the “victim card” and whining about the oppression of Conservative professors at law schools.

  18. Jonathan wrote, “Rather than study viewpoint intolerance on campuses generally, the journal is calling only for research that supports a narrative that our schools are actually under the yoke of conservative ideology. It is a bizarre claim that has appeared recently in other academic publications.”

What they are doing is gaslighting the public with pure psychological projection.

    This effort will fail.

    1. Steve Witherspoon — I wish I could agree with you that it will fail, but I fear that it will just deepen the paranoia of the Democratic base inside academia. These papers will parade every “microaggression” and thought crime before the public, and the mentally deranged left will just wallow in its victimhood. Reads like a bad Russian novel.

      1. Giocon1 wrote, “I fear that it will just deepen the paranoia of the Democratic base inside academia. These papers will parade every “microaggression” and thought crime before the public, and the mentally deranged left will just wallow in its victimhood.”

You’re making very reasonable points and after I submitted the comment I second guessed myself on that very point.

I immediately reflected and realized that the left has probably dumbed down their hive minded cult to the point that they are not likely capable of seeing through the gaslighting and classic psychological projection in their propaganda attempt; however, the political right and independents will see straight through their unethical rationalizations, their gaslighting and their psychological projection filled propaganda.

You’re correct, this effort of theirs won’t change any minds it will just deepen the political divide.

        1. Witherspoon says:

“You’re correct, this effort of theirs won’t change any minds it will just deepen the political divide.”

          So be it.
