“I Think Like a Criminal”: Pennsylvania Lawyer Brings New Meaning To Truth in Advertising

The one thing that Daniel Muessig cannot be accused of is false advertising. The Pennsylvania attorney became something of a sensation after his 3½-minute video featured his tag line “Trust me, I may have a law degree, but I think like a criminal.” That was more true than many assumed. Muessig has now pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to distribute hundreds of pounds of marijuana in April and May 2019.

Muessig, 39, was nailed in a 2019 investigation by the FBI into drug trafficking in the Pittsburgh area. According to the Post-Gazette the FBI tapped one of the phones used by Chadlin Leavy, a heroin and cocaine supplier for a Pittsburgh street gang. During the surveillance, agents spotted Muessig enter an apartment with a backpack. Muessig and another man were later spotted carrying two boxes out of the apartment building and putting them into a Dodge Ram. The boxes were later found to contain $400,000. Inside the apartment, they found boxes containing 404 pounds of marijuana.

In his viral video, Muessig and friends acted out various crimes. In one scene, two guys cocked their guns, pulled masks over their faces and took off to rob someone. But before they left, however, they smiled and gave two thumbs up to the camera. “Thanks Dan!” Muessig then announced that he was the lawyer “Pittsburgh criminals hire when they commit crimes.”

It appears that he later decided to eliminate the middle men and just commit the crimes himself.

Muessig is now on administrative suspension from practicing law, according to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s disciplinary board website.

  1. Given his guilty plea .. the Disciplinary Board can do nothing but disbar him. Hopefully … forever. (I doubt that will prevent him from being the proverbial “jailhouse lawyer.”)

  2. “You can’t handle the truth!”

Americans enjoy the freedom of ingestion by the 9th Amendment.

Ingestion is not prohibited by the Constitution.

The Constitution severely limits and restricts government as it provides maximal freedom to individuals.

As in the 1st Amendment, Congress shall make no law respecting the ingestion of substances, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;…

Congress clearly has the power to legislate against property damage and bodily injury.

Laws against substance ingestion are as impossible, preposterous and unconstitutional as laws against suicide; people commit the crime of suicide without regard for the law.

Few can imagine a sentence of life in prison of death by hanging for the crime of illegal suicide, requiring exhumation.

Powers not provided to the federal government are reserved to the People, or to the States, per the 10th Amendment; people can cope with the decision to ingest substances, and no collective decision by a State is necessary and can only be incoherently punitive and arbitrary.

  3. As a resident of the oft forgotten Pittsburgh neighboring county of Beaver, I’m not sure what it means to have finally been noticed by this guy.

  4. Did I miss the part where he was sentence to Prison for his crimes?

Did the IRS Tax Collector show up on his doorstep?

Was his Billing Records audited by the Bar Association or local District Attorney to see if his income was the product of Criminal Acts and thus be seizable?

  5. In these times of lies, anger, and vitriol, it is good to have a little humor once in a while

  6. Can we finally dispense with the silliness that a law degree, and passing the BAR somehow imputes super powers, and moral integrity onto a person? The more I deal with lawyers, it is clear the posses nothing more than the ability to communicate in a foreign language, legalese. Many are so topic/subject focused they display astounding ignorance of common knowledge.
