The Other “Big Lie”: Democrats Fuel Doubts Over the Legitimacy of the Coming Elections

Below is my column in The Hill on the increasing claims by Democrats that there is a “plot” to “steal” the 2024 election. President Joe Biden has returned to that claim in his last three major public appearances. In his press conference, President Biden referred to how Republicans want to “change the outcome of the election” and that the next election in 2024 could “easily be made illegitimate.” He added that “the increase in the prospect of being illegitimate is in direct proportion to us not being able to get these reforms passed.” If that sounds familiar, it is because it what the Democrats accused Trump of doing before the 2020 election.

Here is the column:

Napoleon Bonaparte once observed that “History is a set of lies agreed upon.” The problem today is that there is little agreement on what the lies mean when lies attributed to one party are being used by the other party to achieve the same goal.

For months, President Biden, Democratic politicians, and some in the media have hammered away at “Trump’s Big Lie” of the 2020 election. They insist that former President Trump began months before the election to plant a false narrative that changes in election laws were part of an effort to “steal” the election. However, in the last few weeks, Biden and others are pushing their own “Big Lie” that state election laws are now being changed to steal the 2022 and 2024 elections. What is most striking is how these claims are detached from the actual laws themselves — the power of this claim being based entirely upon its repetition rather than its foundation.

After the 2020 election, some of us expressed skepticism over the claims of widespread fraud but waited to see the evidence presented in court. That evidence never materialized and, while I predicted an effort to challenge the electoral votes two days after the election, I wrote that calls to challenge the certification of the election were unfounded factually and legally.

Now it is the Democrats and some in the media who are declaring a “plot to steal” the 2024 election due to electoral changes in red states. The changes are being used as an excuse to federalize elections in the United States, an area that has been largely left to the states. Indeed, these laws are portrayed as such an attack on democracy itself that refusing to curtail the Senate’s filibuster rule is not a vote for preserving a long-protected rule of consensus but being an accessory to “election subversion.”

Biden’s embrace of rage politics has fueled the hysteria surrounding these laws. Last week, CNN’s White House correspondent Stephen Collinson denounced “a nationwide effort by GOP-run states to make it harder to cast ballots and easier to steal elections, which is rooted in ex-President Donald Trump’s voter fraud lies.”

The statement was telling. In responding to Trump’s “Big Lie,” Democrats and many in the media are doing something remarkably similar by claiming these state laws are an effort to steal the coming elections — claims that might fuel anger and violence similar to that seen after the 2020 election.

What is most notable about the relentless coverage of the effort to “steal” the election is the lack of specifics. Indeed, when President Biden has attempted to give specifics, he has received “Pinocchios” from Washington Post fact-checkers. He falsely and repeatedly claimed, for example, that the Georgia law (which he described as “Jim Crow on steroids”) sought to reduce hours to vote. The election law actually does the opposite: It guaranteed that, at a minimum, polls would remain open for a full workday while allowing extended hours commonly used on Election Day.

This month, President Biden pivoted away from the false claim of preventing people from voting to the more Trumpian claim of questioning whether ballots would be counted: “not as to who can vote but who gets to count the vote, count the vote, count the vote — it’s about election subversion, not just whether or not people get to vote.” Any vote miscount allegation can be (as it was with the Trump litigation) reviewed by the courts. Indeed, many of the provisions alluded to by Democrats have been reviewed and — at least temporarily — upheld.

Requiring voter identification has been repeatedly cited as clear evidence of an effort to steal the election. However, 80 percent of the public supports voter identification rules. The courts have overwhelmingly upheld these rules as constitutional.

Nevertheless, the drumbeat of the Democrats’ “Big Lie” continues. This month, Washington Post columnist Paul Waldman heralded Biden for confronting the “Big Lie” of Trump, but claimed that elections were still being stolen: “That dagger is still held at democracy’s throat. The lie about 2020 justifies and enables all the things Republicans are doing now to establish the means and the willingness to overturn the next election.”

Once again, Waldman does not actually state how the elections are being stolen. They just are, he says.

What is most interesting is how this claim is being amplified by Biden and others despite every indication that the public isn’t buying it, with election reforms barely registering on some polls as a major concern for voters. That is the problem with big lies. If the lies are not accepted by the public, they may just reduce faith in you rather than the election. Friedrich Nietzsche observed, “I’m not upset that you lied to me, I’m upset that from now on I can’t believe you.” Biden seems to be facing such a Nietzsche moment. With polls showing the president plunging and voters turning toward the GOP, there is clearly doubt over whether there really is a “dagger at democracy’s throat.”

There are good-faith arguments over issues like voter identification and early voting. There are also good provisions in the election bill that should be adopted by states. Yet even the Atlantic and some CNN hosts have noted that some blue states have even stricter rules (including Biden’s own state of Delaware), but President Biden is not claiming that Democrats there are trying to steal elections.

States historically have been allowed to develop their own election rules. While many Democrats are calling for the federalization of elections as proof of faith in democracy, these state laws are the product of democratic processes. When President Biden went to Atlanta to denounce the Georgia law, claiming it was part of an effort to kill democracy, he was asking Georgians to support negating a law that Georgians created for themselves … in the name of democracy.

The fact is that democracy is protected by our courts — and by a host of laws protecting the right to vote and banning discrimination against minority voters. What is daunting is that this Democratic “Big Lie” is being promulgated by the president on the basis of fighting Trump’s “Big Lie.” It is like condemning Bigfoot sightings as the basis for creating a federal Bigfoot bureau.

The Democrats’ “Big Lie” may not be convincing the public, but it is clearly convincing the most extreme parts of their party. Lies can give license to those who are predisposed to violence on both sides, from Antifa to the Proud Boys. We have enough lies going into 2024. What we need is leadership.

    It’s great that you showed up in a t-shirt and jeans, dressed like us peasants, to help clear off the garbage left from months of train looting. However, how about you make a real difference and repeal the Democrat policies that led to months of train looting?

    -Reverse the mandates that led to so many truckers retiring, quitting, or getting fired due to relying on their immunity from recovering from Covid instead of getting vaccinated. That would mean that the container ships off Long Beach could actually get unloaded and shipped somewhere.
    -Reverse no cash bail policies which puts criminals back on the streets to immediately commit more crimes. The results are in. Face them.
    -Get the ultra liberal DAs to enforce the law instead of releasing memos listing all the crimes they will not prosecute, which are avidly read by criminals
    -Lower the felony threshold back down from $950. Right now, thieves are shoplifting and looting with impunity. Store employees don’t want to go to jail making a citizens’ arrest, and the cops won’t show up for most shoplifting, because the DA won’t prosecute. Democrats have created a Mad Maxian dystopia of unrestrained theft. All that’s missing is some dystopian chic face paint, feathers, and deconstructed trash armor.
    -Refund the police so they can fight crime and restore crime fighting units
    -Call in the National Guard if you have to, in order to protect railways, otherwise known as “supply chain conduits”

    Do you want a photo op of “doing something”, or do you want to actually do something? Hint, the latter will require taking responsibility for failed far Left policies, apologizing to the people of CA, correcting course, and admitting that conservatives were right all along.

    Republicans this year have sponsored at least 114 new state laws that make changes to elections, including new restrictions on mail ballots following a sharp increase in voting by mail during the pandemic-era election, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis conducted after many state legislatures have wrapped up their sessions.

    The list of GOP-controlled states that have made changes includes Georgia and Arizona, both states where President Biden won by narrow margins and where tensions remain high as former President Donald Trump continues to advance unsupported fraud claims to explain his loss in 2020.

    Democrats, who control fewer state houses, have sponsored at least 86 new laws that mostly expand access to ballots, such as extending voting by mail in California and Nevada and expanding ballot drop-off boxes in Virginia and Illinois, the Journal’s analysis shows.

    The flurry of new laws at the state level comes as Democrats’ effort to pass federal-level voting legislation has stalled due to Republican opposition in the Senate. Taken together, the changes mean that tens of millions of voters around the country will have to navigate new rules to cast their ballots in next year’s midterm elections.

    Many state laws are already facing court challenges, and some states are considering more changes. Republicans who control the statehouse in Texas are pushing for changes that would broadly tighten voting rules across the state through a special session, though Democratic lawmakers have stalled the process by leaving the state.

    The National Conference of State Legislatures, which conducted its own analysis, says the U.S. this year hasn’t surpassed the number of new state election laws seen in some past years, but that some states adopted lengthy bills in 2021 full of changes.

    The WSJ treads lightly here; reporting this story in language that won’t offend Trump defenders. Nevertheless we learn Republicans have sponsored “114 new state laws that make changes to elections”. These changes come in the wake of Donald Trump’s ‘big lie”.

    Therefore one needn’t be a political scientist to note the optics of all these changes: “False Election Claims – Changes To Election Laws”. Anyone incapable of grasping these optics is in denial.

Another provision put forth by the Democrats is that no proof of residency is required to vote. A mail in ballot is being sent to all residences wether citizens or not. As usual a lot of useful information such as the above is left out. You missed your calling. You should have been a vote farmer so you could learn to harvest all the ballots you can. Consequently due to your lack of properly presenting what the Democrats are trying to do your evaluations must receive four bses on the bs meter.       A bill filed in the Virginia House of Delegates this week would ban abortions after 20 weeks of gestation except in cases where the pregnant woman is at risk of death or “substantial and irreversible” damage to her health.

      The legislation has a formidable chance of becoming law in a state where Republicans now control the House and the Executive Mansion, and Democrats hold a slim, 21-19 edge in the Senate.

      Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who took office last week, said during his campaign that he would support banning abortion at the point when a fetus can feel pain – which other states with similar bans have defined as 20 weeks.

      Youngkin supports exceptions in cases of rape, incest or when the woman’s life is in jeopardy. As filed, the bill does not include exceptions for rape or incest.

              It is common and understandable to mock and denigrate that which scares us. The field of Genetics is a very complicated, cerebral and 3D conceptually visual science. Briefly….

              We all have 46 pairs of homologous chromosomes, with 23 coming from each parent. These csomes are found in each of our 30 trillion cells. Each csome is a molecule of double stranded DNA. If we were to remove one csome and lay it on the floor, its length would be 6 feet long. In real life our DNA csomes are wrapped tightly onto a spool called a nucleosome like beads on a string. When it is wrapped, much of the DNA is dense heterochromatin and does nothing. The few regions that are not dense are known as euchromatin and these regions of genetic material hold the template for our phenotype, our physical traits. The DNA becomes unraveled from the spool when epigenetic processes are summoned. So all parts of DNA eventually are summoned and activated. DNA must be replicated throughout our life, to synthesize new proteins. Proteins dictate everything we do. Once DNA undergoes replication, it unzips like a ladder, and needs a new partner strand to make it double stranded again. That new strand is mRNA. mRNA can only function when joined to its identical partner. It is useless and degraded if the mRNA does not match DNA perfectly. One mismatched nucleotide base within mRNA strand. is enough to cause it to be degraded by enzymes. Once perfectly matched to its identical counterpart within DNA, then RNa transcription occurs, followed by translation to synthesize new proteins

              The vaccine introduces an mRNA that is identical to current SARS-CoV-2 viral strains known as Variants of Concern. These vaccine mRNA molecules can not attach, partner or “marry” any DNA in our body because it has no perfect match. The only cells that can use introduced mRNA are specific immune cells. These specific immune cells literally see the foreign mRNA and form antibodies and memory T cells to create a defense against the VOC. It is the predictable and purposeful function of immune cells to create antibodies and memory T cells to attack, neutralize and destroy any foreign substance that invades the body. Thus the mRNA is merely a cue for immune cells to do what they are supposed to do. The mRNA is degraded after immune cells scan it to copy its genetic code to synthesize antibodies and memory T cells. The mRNA technology is fascinating, impressive and brilliant technology.

              Note, some peoples immune system may not react well to the introduced mRNA, just like these people may have a severe and deadly reaction/rejection to blood donations, tissue grafts, organ transplants and medical devices like hip replacement, knee replacement, artificial eye, etc, etc, etc.

              I can understand people being afraid of that which they do not understand. Your statement of not having gotten a colonoscopy for colon cancer screening is a prime example of my previous statement. However, with most of us having computers available in our hands, briefcases and homes, ignorance is no longer a valid excuse.                     My mother was diagnosed with T2D before she died, and her primary care / Internal Medicine physician wanted to place her on insulin. I blew a fuse. I went with my mother to her physician appointment, she introduced me, and we went at it. I came at him vigorously, incredulously, scientifically. My mother kept interrupting me, apologizing to her physician about her aggressive son. He finally agreed, stating she would be his first patient on Glucophage. Several years later my mother died from leukemia, and her primary care physician attended the funeral. I had forgotten about him since I deal with a lot of people in medicine. He said he was my mother’s PCP before her leukemia, and he wanted to thank me. Not understanding him, I asked him what he meant. He said, by my mother’s open coffin in the funeral home, that I had made him a better physician by showing him scientific data, clinical studies and challenging him. He said he had never had a patient who was so loved by her son, to the point of pouncing on his antiquated treatment habits. He shook my hand warmly with a tear in his eyes, and then embraced me and left. I was stunned. That was humility.

                      Metformin is a widely used, relatively inexpensive drug. I am not trying to infer that it is a good or bad drug, but it does cause lactic acidosis on rare occasions. Since it was relatively new at the time and people were afraid of it, I don’t find it surprising that in your sampling of physicians, none of them saw it. Despite that, I think it may be the number one oral agent prescribed to new diabetics.

And now drop boxes must be located inside a polling station forcing Black voter to go to a polling station and possibly being exposed to Covid. This placed an undue burden on the elderly and disabled. In 2020 drop boxes were conveniently placed outside, 24 hours a day and throughout the the evening on Election Day; (2) Absentee ballots–Under the old law a voter could request an absentee ballot as early as 6 months before the election, Under the new law that window has been cut by more than half. In 2020 Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger sent absentee ballots to all voters because of Covid. He got a lot of blowback from Georgia’s GOP because this made it easier to vote! Mail voting proved popular with Democratic voters. Nearly 2/3rds of the 1.3 million absentee votes were for Biden. In addition, the new law requires proof of identity to receive an absentee ballot. In Georgia more than 272,000 voters, mostly Blacks don’t have a driver’s license or state approved ID. This adversely affects the elderly and disabled; (3) State Election Board– the new Georgia law created a new Chair of the Board selected by the GOP controlled legislature that has the power to remove any county election official. This means the Republican controlled Board can install partisan hacks to oversee election counts. All these changes may appear insignificant but in close elections can be effective in depressing the Democratic and Black vote. That’s the whole purpose. Georgia Republicans don’t want a repeat of 2020.

    Throughout the country “red” states are erecting unnecessary barriers to voting. In Missouri you can’t vote by mail unless your ballot is notarized. This places an unnecessary burden on people of color, students, the elderly and the disabled. In California every eligible voter is sent a mail-in ballot. You don’t have to request it. In the time of Covid this makes sense and doesn’t result in widespread voter fraud. Republicans make no apologies for what they are doing. In Wisconsin the GOP controlled legislature has imposed similar voter suppression rules. The GOP makes no apologies. A GOP lawmaker was caught on video saying Republicans need to “cheat like the Democrats” (?). But you bizarrely claim what the GOP is doing is just part of the “democratic processes”. If you really believe this I have a bridge in San Francisco to sell you!

    1. Washington and Oregon also have universal vote by mail – works great – King County has about 1 drop box for every 20,000 voters, all of the ones I have seen have 24 hour access. One town I saw has 1 drop box for about 300 voters seems to me. So far the only “voter fraud” I have seen in the news were by Trump voters. Making people stand in line for 8 hours because they have the wrong color skin is Election Fraud and seems to be a common practice in some GOP controlled areas.

    And there are many more. The truth is that the Rs learned their lessons form 2020 and won’t make the same mistakes. They are putting in place the tools they need to really steal an election.

    Laws in some Republican-controlled states also now include heavy penalties for election officials who supposedly step out of line. Take Iowa, where officials can now face felony charges for failing to carry out election laws or failing to follow the guidance of the secretary of state, who is currently a Republican. They can also be fined $10,000 for “technical infractions” of their duties. Such rules could have a chilling effect whereby local officials may not govern as they see fit out of fear of being targeted.

    Every time I read about these scumbags we elect as politicians and their antics, I need something akin to a divinely inspired rainbow to calm me down and restore some hope. Luckily, I am a member of a old time baseball group that discusses old players, teams, games etc. Today, we were talking about Ty Cobb. Cobb’s granddaughter, Cindy, who is a member of the group, related a not-so-well-known story about Cobb and his adventures in the late 1930s.

    Seems well after his playing days were over, Cobb was traveling through Greenville, South Carolina when he decided to stop in — fresh off Prohibition, mind you — at a local clapboard liquor store and buy a bottle of bourbon. The Georgia Peach entered the humble premises and spied then-disgraced ballplayer, “Shoeless Joe” Jackson, famous (or infamous) to the casual fan for the 1919 Black Sox scandal that had throttled the sport with the taint of bribery and the throwing of World Series’ games. Though Jackson was exonerated in court and played a fabulous Series (BA .375, no errors and pegging a runner at the plate to save a run), his “name was mud” in the colloquial language of the day and he was running a broken down hootch house in Bible Belt South Carolina with his wife, Katie. You tell me about the couple’s financial prospects there.

    Anyway, the ever-confident Cobb stode in and went to the counter and asked for his bottle. Cobb stared at the now aged ballplayer with whom he had maintained a friendship through countless seasons and kept on staring as the proprietor went about his business of selecting, wrapping and writing out the bill all with not a wit of recognition or acknowledgement between arguably the two greatest ballplayers of any era. Finally, Cobb had reached the limits of his patience and bellowed out, “For God’s sakes, Joe, don’t you remember me?” Jackson somberly replied, “Well, sure, I remember you, Ty. I just didn’t think anyone wanted to remember me anymore.”

    I love this story as it reveals so much about the humble Jackson and the generous Cobb who obviously knew about the faux scandal involving the former White Sox player but acknowledged his old friend just the same. Something gratifyingly human about subtle virtue, shining loyalty and shared repect. Our current crop of leaders could learn libraries about class, forgiveness and decency from two old ballplayers in a ramshackle country store on a dusty day in Greenville, South Carolina.
