World Health Organization (WHO) head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus appears to be expanding the scope of his global effort from the pandemic to what he calls the “infodemic.” Tedros weighed into the conflict between musician Neil Young and podcaster Joe Rogan and streaming giant Spotify. Tedros supported Young’s demand that Rogan be censored by the company for his views on the virus and treatments. It was a particularly glaring position for Tedros after he and WHO have been repeatedly accused of supporting China in early efforts to scuttle investigations into the lab theory on the origin of this virus.
Joe Rogan — who hosts “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast — and has been criticized for questioning whether young healthy people should get the vaccine due to its low fatality rate for younger people. He was also criticized for praising ivermectin, a medicine used to kill parasites in animals and humans despite objections that it is ineffective against the virus.
As will come as no surprise to people on this blog, I have long opposed efforts to cancel Rogan or others for their dissenting views on the virus or its treatment. In the last few years, we have seen an increasing call for private censorship from Democratic politicians and liberal commentators. Faculty and editors are now actively supporting modern versions of book-burning with blacklists and bans for those with opposing political views. Columbia Journalism School Dean Steve Coll has denounced the “weaponization” of free speech, which appears to be the use of free speech by those on the right. So the dean of one of the premier journalism schools now supports censorship. Free speech advocates are facing a generational shift that is now being reflected in our law schools, where free speech principles were once a touchstone of the rule of law. As millions of students are taught that free speech is a threat and that “China is right” about censorship, these figures are shaping a new society in their own intolerant images.
What is most distressing is to see health officials calling for censorship. The National Institute of Health (NIH) has been sued by animal rights groups over actual government censorship.
In this case, Tedros backed Young and thanked him for “standing up against misinformation and inaccuracies” around Covid vaccinations before stressing “we all have a role to play to end this pandemic and infodemic.”
He added “@NeilYoungNYA, thanks for standing up against misinformation and inaccuracies around #COVID19 vaccination… Public and private sector, in particular #socialmedia platforms, media, individuals — we all have a role to play to end this pandemic and infodemic.”
The “role” being described by Tedros is corporate censorship.
We have seen various journalistic and scientific figures banned for expressing skepticism over pandemic claims from the origins of the virus to the efficacy of certain treatments. For example, when many people raised the possibility that the virus may have been released from the nearby Chinese virology lab (rather than the “wet market” theory), they were denounced as virtually a lunatic fringe. Even objections to the bias of authors of a report dismissing the lab theory were ridiculed. The New York Times reporter covering the area called it “racist” and implausible. Now, even W.H.O. admits that the lab theory is possible and Biden officials are admitting that it is indeed plausible.
The same is true with the debate over the efficacy of masks. For over a year, some argued that the commonly used masks are ineffective to protect against the virus. Now, the CDC is warning that the masks do not appear to block these variants and even CNN’s experts are calling the cloth masks “little more than facial decorations.”
Not so long ago, many prescient Americans sounded the alarm that international forces aligned with the UN were taking over America. Maybe you remember those odd rumors of undercover UN trucks positioning themselves in the dark of night. Trucks in the middle of the night, what a crazy conspiracy theory, they said. And the globalists laughed, They ridiculed. They ridiculed Americans that the powers that be would soon enough marginalize as deplorables bitterly clinging to their guns and religion. The globalists laughed. And they laughed. For a while, it even worked. Some of us, our judgment clouded by gauzy visions of increasing wealth, may have even joined in.
You know what? Those prescient Americans turned out to be right. Sure, they didn’t wear tailored suits or appreciate good wine. They don’t have elite educations. They don’t express themselves with the erudite sophistication of Trudeau, Macron, Obama, or the aspiring Davos crowd. But they were right. It turns out that the infiltration of American power structures didn’t require trucks in the middle of the night. It was more sophisticated, and more insidious then they could have imagined. The shocking statements by the head of the WHO – fundamentally opposed to America’s core values, but oh so in line with the mores of today’s progressive elite – are just the latest example.

In the world of academia and science, it is dog eat dog. Research funding is scarce and those that hold the purse strings get to call the shots on many of the big studies. Corporate influence is ubiquitous and those that dare swim against the stream perish, especially if they want grants and funding.
If a researcher dares to “cross convention’s bounds” they will find themselves unfunded and unsupported.
The heart and soul of the scientific method is to question and verify, question the study’s construct, thoroughness, and give meticulous attention to assuring that the data was collected in a uniform documented, and repeatable method. Each of the sources must be combed through, scrutinized, before being cited. It takes time. When this is done, the material is distributed to distinguished researchers for reading, criticism and rewriting if necessary.
When that is complete, the authors must disclose their financial conflicts of interests and conflicts of influence. When the study finally makes it to the reputable journal, the authors must list their contact information so the the community of interest has a method of contacting the author. The publication must have a good reputation for readers to challenge the publication. Often the publication research is also presented as a poster at an academy of science where the author must make further defense of the material.
When I read a scientific study, I first go to the abstract and then to the discussion and conclusion. I jump to the final few paragraphs. I look at the conflicts of interest section and see who funded the study and what are the writers’ sources of sponsorship and payments. If there is a corporate sponsorship or if the author receives grants from the maker of a product mentioned in the study, I will read it but am on high alert for bias.
The best written studies will only achieve a “best fitting line” levels of confidence. Nothing in medical science is 100% certain, especially in fields of immunology and virology. The consumer of a scientific study eventually takes any “new” findings with a grain of salt. There is no such thing as “the science is settled.”
The point is to illustrate that “experts” do not have all the answers. It is refreshing when a spokesperson will say, “We don’t know for certain. This is our best guess.” When they venture beyond the known facts they are in danger of employing the SWAG method. (Scientific Wild A** Guess).
It is the job of the American citizen to question every form of information. Especially now. We would like to trust our most sacred institutions such as the FBI, DOJ, US Congress, Senate, White House, CDC and the WHO. Many of these institutions have veered away from their once pristine reputation of accuracy and dependability. Unfortunately, the consumers are drowning in a sea of information and misinformation, but the curious thing about this is that many will go only to two sources for their information: Google and Wikipedia. This a poor habit as both sources are selective and biased in what the consumer sees or reads.
I sat next to a Google engineer on a plane ride home a couple of years ago. He said, “We joke that the best place to hide a dead body is on page two of a Google search.”
In the recent past, we could turn to our institutions and to ethical reporters and media outlets for a solid, truthful report. Like Joe Friday would say, “Just the facts.” To feed the 24 hour news monster, once trusted media outlets require massive amounts of “dirty laundry” and gossip. They need sensationalism and have become nothing more than the old grocery store tabloids.
Our once trusted institutions have suffered scandal. It is not surprise that people are turning to other forms of information to try to make sense out of the tangle mess we are witnessing.
The answer to this dilemma is to train our young students and citizens in methods of critical thinking, critical reading instead of censorship. If something is truthful, it will withstand scrutiny. Censorship is a malevolent tactic to shut up a critic when there is something to hide. Our leaders have lost our trust.

Not really. Research funding is flush with cash. Always has been. There are literally hundreds to thousands of angel investors waiting in the wings for someone to approach them with a scientific idea that may prove to be a cure, a breakthrough, and a significant ROI to make them richer. Lack of money has never been a problem in our civilization. Trick is convincing them why your idea is worth their investment.
Medical researchers have to find their own funding sources. Once done, the university or research center gets their share for providing the facilities, instruments and overhead to conduct their research. The university isnt involved in providing funding. They have tons of ”genius” researchers clawing for their facilities, yet have no one to serve as an angel investor. Research triumphs come and go. What may be an eureka moment for one researcher and hence the university, is ripe for being turned on its head down the road, e.g. atherosclerosis as related to “bad cholesterol” (1990s) vs an inflammatory process driven by immune cells.

You dont know how to read scientific studies. If the abstract is enticing, the intro provides the frame of reference for the authors, the methods section is crucial, the results section essential. By then the reader can make their own conclusions, and perhaps read the discussion to see id there exists congruence, unless if the topic is beyond their comprehension, and then they read the discussion and conclusion sections. The list of references is also vastly important, the longer the better, minimum 100-150 references to be credible. An important section of the paper is where the authors come clean and admit the limitations of their study. The reader should already know just by looking at the methods and results sections. If the authors fail to state the limitations, when they clearly exist, their conclusions are worthless.

How one skims through a medical study before digging into its content, I suppose is a matter of personal taste, what is important, as you indicated is reading it thoroughly and critically and learning to recognize if it is a well-constructed study and see if the authors admit any weaknesses they discovered in the process.
When I think of corporate resistance in medical science, the names Marshall and Warren and their remarkable research comes to mind. “The opposition we got from the drug industry was basically inertia,” said Dr. Barry J. Marshall of the University of Western Australia, the other Nobel winner, and “because the makers of H2 blockers funded much of the ulcer research at the time, all they had to do was ignore the Helicobacter discovery.”

My research experiences invite negative reactions from those who want to retain the status quo. I am having such a hard time watching the destruction of our country. I watched highlights of Senator Ron Johnson’s hearing on COVID last night (on YouTube). Very disturbing. YouTube will probably censor the videos pretty quickly, but usually other channels will repost. Simply put – we no longer live in the land of the free. Our liberty is being destroyed by the Democrat party, aided by legacy media, Big Tech, and now Big Pharma too. Seeing medical doctors cry because they were denied the ability to treat their patients, hearing of censorship, of pharmacies not allowed to dispense doctor-ordered prescriptions, learning that hospitals are refusing inexpensive life-saving treatment in preference for government mandated expensive drugs is something I still struggle to comprehend. How did the USA go from being the land of the free to the land of the muzzled? I suppose the answer is slowly and then all at once. I also watched Dr. Scott Atlas’ fact-based presentation to Hillsdale College in which he clearly demonstrated the wrong-headed drive of Fauci and Birx to lock down the country and the horrific results their lack of knowledge and stiff-necked approach created. When you see the term “misinformation” you can be pretty sure it is a fact or opinion with which the left disagrees.

It’s about the law and Lincoln broke it to “save” the nation…but at that point all you are saving is a lawless nation. Obviously we can never say what the future would have looked like if we simply had a divorce instead of all the killing.
