Denver Public Schools Show Video Telling Kids to Avoid Police “as Perpetrators of Violence”

Some advice given to students was to not report attacks to the police.

There is a controversy in the Denver Public School system as students were shown a video telling them not to call police if they see a violently racist or homophobic incident because police are perpetrators of such violence. What is particularly shocking, however, was the response of the school district to the showing of this insulting and dangerous film. The district said that nobody at Denver South High School actually watched the video before showing it to the students under their charge.

The video titled “Don’t be a Bystander: 6 Tips for Responding to Racist Attacks,” tells students what to do if they see a racial attack. It states that “in our current political moment, White supremacists and White nationalists have been emboldened, and as a result, public attacks are on the rise.”  It then gives tips on what to do including do “not call the police” because it “escalates, rather than reduces” violence.  It explains “[b]ecause police have been trained to see people of color, gender-nonconforming folks, and Muslims as criminals, they often treat victims as perpetrators of violence. So, if the victim hasn’t asked you to call the police, do not — I repeat, do not — call the police.”

It is a dangerous message for children not only in getting them to view police as threats but not to report racial incidents to the police to allow rapid intervention.

What really stood out, however, was this line in the coverage: “A district spokesperson told Fox News Digital the video was chosen because of its title and theme, but no one viewed the video before it was shown to students.”

This makes “the dog ate my homework” look perfectly credible. I am not sure which is worse: watching and assigning the video or assigning a video without watching it. Notably, to download the video from YouTube, the school official would have seen this description directly under the video:

Created by BCRW and members of Project NIA, this video offers an abolitionist approach to bystander intervention that does not rely on the police.

We have all been burned by videos in social media where you think you are sending a funny or relevant video but fail to watch the whole thing to spot foul or offensive content. However, posting a video for school children to see is a bit different from an errant tweet.

It hardly conveys the seriousness of this anti-racism program that the teachers do not even watch the videos being assigned or posted.

The school district offered little beyond a shrug and did not indicate any degree of discipline for the posting of this offensive video.

There is also little response from the Barnard Center for Research on Women which posted the video to YouTube in 2017. It has posted this video for years.  The group’s website displays a series of posts on abolition and “Defund the Police” measures.

  1. Colorado has been completely californicated. We used to joke about the Republic of Boulder, but truth is, Boulder seems centrist compared to the rest of the heavily populated counties and the resort counties in the high country.

  2. The district should get an F for essentially turning in a book report after apparently only having read the back cover or dust jacket.

And, Project NIA? I’d have to hunt up what that stands for since neither the news article nor the youtube video description defined it. Or, I could speculate: “No Independence Anymore”? “Neuroses Induce Anxiety”? “Nihilism Intensifies Animosity”?

  3. “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.”

    1. Yup. And that’s precisely what happened, but more accurate would have been “…from the beginning of fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” They began with dividing the already tenuously-united states.

    1. to hell with “People-of-Color™”
It remains the most racist term in amerika today

  5. Once again, schools feel entitled to indoctrinate children with far Left political messaging. Once again, schools insert themselves into the parents’ prerogative.

American public schools are a disgrace. Over 60% of students cannot read at grade level. There are schools who graduate seniors who are functionally illiterate.

We don’t need Drag Queen Story Hour, Youth Drag Shows, DEI, or Transgender curriculum. We need an overhaul of the public education system.

If you have time, listen to this audio report on how American schools refuse to follow the science of reading.

They do not want an educated populace.
An uneducated populace is easier to indoctrinate. They have to use distractions and propaganda to keep children from thinking for themselves or critically.
The numbers of homeschooling since COVID have gone up, and remain elevated. As more people, parents see the insanity that is invading public schools, they too will switch to alternatives. I fully expect the wokeist to demand DEI to made mandatory in homeschooling curriculum.

  6. These activists think white supremacists are behind the skyrocketing crime in America? Seriously? More than 8 people think there’s some kind of resurgence of the KKK?

    1. Karen S.
      In a word, yes.
Everything is racist. There are white supremacists everywhere, behind every bush, every corner. There are leftists openly declaring all conservatives are racist or white supremacists.
Critical of Biden’s student loan debt forgiveness, transferring the burden from those students to all taxpayers, to include those who did not go to college or those who paid off their student debt?
      You are a racist!

  7. This is outrageous. By lying to kids to make them afraid of police, they’ve created the situation where a child who’s abused at home might not tell a police officer. A child who’s lost might run away from an officer. These kids could grow up to become adults who fight police.

It is purely false propaganda that police are out hunting black people.

This kind of propaganda encourages black men to fight with police and resist arrest, which can lead to additional charges, injury, or death. Most police use of force is applied to people resisting arrest or physically fighting with cops. Even so, an unarmed black man is statistically less likely to be shot by police than an unarmed white man.

Comply with police, obey commands, and save your complaints for the judge or Internal Affairs. You’re never going to get a cop to do what you want by yelling at him, or worse. If you think you’re being treated unfairly, then address it through proper channels.

My brother was cuffed as a teenager and made to sit on the curb of shame with his friend, because a car passing by observed them removing the screen to the house. It was his friend’s house, and his friend had forgot his key. The boys had to sit on the curb, handcuffed, so the cop could make sure they stayed put while he checked their story. It all got figured out and they were released. No injuries. No cries of police brutality or racism.

My husband pulled over in an empty parking lot to figure out how to get to a job site. All of a sudden, a cop came roaring up behind him, jumped out with gun drawn, and yelled for him to exit the vehicle with his hands up. Apparently, they were looking for a similar vehicle in the area, for a serious crime. My husband calmly and veeeeeery carefully did everything the cop said while they checked him out. The cop cleared him, and they each went on about their day. No violence. No escalation.

If my family were black, these instances would have been held up as examples of driving while black, or police racism. They’re just a couple of the millions of interactions with police that go on without issue every year.

    1. It is purely false propaganda that police are out hunting black people.

The same people pushing this propaganda are the same people pushing for stricter gun control laws and assault weapons bans- which will be enforced by these very same police.

  8. Let’s STOP calling the taxpayer supported schools. “public” schools. They are government schools!!

The student loan debacle is yet another product of the communist teacher/professor unions’ avarice and greed.

A free society advances on merit and success, not affirmative action, quotas, forced busing, welfare and “free stuff.”

A free society succeeds on ambition, acumen and wealth creation, not the redistribution of other people’s wealth.

    2. RE:”Let’s STOP calling the taxpayer supported schools. “public” schools. They are government schools!! A parochial school is a private primary or secondary school affiliated with a religious organization, and whose curriculum includes general religious education in addition to secular subjects, such as science, mathematics and language arts. They have traditionally been differentiated from taxpayer supported schools through the use of the term ‘public’. Given that taxpayers constitute a portion of the ‘public’, it would appear that the continued use of the term ‘public school’ is appropriate.

  9. WATER AND OIL DO NOT MIX

“Water and oil do not mix. They are said to be immiscible. This is because water is a polar molecule – its structure means that is has a positive charge one end and a negative charge the other end. Water molecules stick together because the positive end of one water molecule is attracted to the negative end of another.”

    Freedom? What Freedom?

Unconstitutionally forcing the physically impossible mixture of political “oil and water” requires the unconstitutional emulsifiers of matriculation affirmative action, grade-inflation affirmative action, employment affirmative action, quotas, welfare, food stamps, minimum wage, rent control, social services, forced busing, public housing, utility subsidies, WIC, SNAP, TANF, HAMP, HARP, TARP, HHS, HUD, EPA, Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Labor, Energy, Obamacare, Social Security, Social Security Disability, Social Security Supplemental Income, Medicare, Medicaid, “Fair Housing” laws, “Non-Discrimination” laws, etc.

How has it come to pass that communists (liberals, progressives, socialists, democrats, RINOs) have obtained the unconstitutional power to compel the political mixture of oil and water in a society created in freedom? Answer: It all began with “Crazy Abe’s” unconstitutional juggernaut, Lincoln’s wholly unconstitutional “Reign of Terror.”

    They couldn’t.

  12. Jonathan: I are disappointed. We had expected you to discuss the release of the redacted affidavit re the FBI search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago. No one on this blog wants to discuss the affidavit and what it means for Donald Trump–probably because it paints an alarming picture of a former president who believed he had a right to hold onto top secret government docs in violation of three federal statutes. Oh well, maybe we can expect you to address this important issue next week? In the meantime, there was other important news this week.

But first, we should address “free expression” on this blog. Some of your loyal supporters don’t think it applies to those of us (e.g., Anonymous the Sane, Natacha and myself) who voice a different POV. The conspiracy follower, “Epstein Didn’t Kill Himself”, says: “Turley’s blog needs a robust content moderation policy to prevent the spread of dangerous reactionary disinformation from the progressive left”. It appears EDKH thinks you should adopt the policies of Twitter and Facebook or maybe those of Trump’s Truth Social. For all my criticism of your posts I take seriously your “free speech absolutist” position. I doubt you would ever institute a “robust content moderation policy” that would exclude opposing POVs. Right? Perhaps you you should point this out to EDKH. That said–on to the news.

Speaking of Trump’s alternative to Twitter, it appears Truth Social (TS) is in deep trouble…just to add to Trump’s other problems. Truth Social is facing major financial and trademark problems. TS owes $1.6 million in back payments to its media host that is threatening legal action. To add to TS’s woes the US Patent Office has just turned down Trump’s request for a trademark for the name “Truth Social”. The Patent Office says the name is “confusing”. There are so many other “Truth” trademarks like “Truth Network”, a Christian radio broadcast network. Seems Trump doesn’t have a monopoly on the “Truth” after all.

We could also talk about Gov. DeSantis’ violent rhetoric this week against Dr. Fauci or GOP attacks on Biden’s cancellation of student debt. The GOP thinks student debt “forgiveness” will be “coming out of the pockets of of working-class Americans”. They call Biden’s plan “socialism”. The GOP has a short memory. Many GOP members of Congress took advantage of the PPP program. Marjorie Taylor Greene received $183, 504 in PPP loans that have since been forgiven. Other GOP PPP borrowers also had their loans forgiven. It seems “socialism” is OK for GOP politicians but not so much for struggling students! This reeks of hypocrisy!

    1. Dennis, Have you received your photos of the struggling students whose loans you will be repaying? It will be nice for you and the wifey to put on your fridge.

    2. RE:”Jonathan: I are disappointed…”There is nothing BUT free expression in these pages, and you have taken advantage of same, on ad infinitum. Now that you have opined, we pray you are feeling much better. Suppose you put a short, concise comment as you are wont to do and allow us to have at you in the usual and customary fashion.

    3. DennisMcintyre, in your world there is only one subject from morning to night. Donald Trump. The rest of us appreciate a variety of subjects to think about. Is it juvenile to only want to read about what you want to read about. Professor Turley has written about the Marlo Largo affidavit extensively. I understand. It’s so difficult when someone takes your pacifier away.

      1. Indeed, TDS is a terrible burden to bear. And this poor Dennis bozo has it REAL bad!

      2. Thinkitthrough: Since Friday when Judge Reinhardt unsealed the affidavit Donald Trump has been the topic of conversation in the media–non-stop all weekend. As long as Trump remains a threat to our Democracy, yeah, I will discuss him. I had hoped he would have just quietly retired to Mar-a Lago to write (or have someone else do it) his memoirs. But he has refused. He still claims the election was “stolen”. He demands attention 24/7. And, so far as I can tell, wants to run again in 2024. So, yes, I have been forced, not by my own choosing, to discuss the Trumpster.

Now if you paid attention to my comment I did discuss other topics, e.g., Gov. DeSantis’ violent attack on Dr. Fauci and those GOP members of Congress who took out substantial PPP loans and then had them forgiven–but now hypocritically claim Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan is “socialism”.

If you want to discuss a “variety” of other topics I am prepared to engage. But just using gratuitous words like “juvenile” and “pacifier” don’t contribute much to the conversation do they? Don’t you have anything substantive to say on any subject?

        1. RE:”As long as Trump remains a threat to our Democracy.” All throughout the patchwork quilt of history one person’s ‘terrorist has been another’s ‘freedom fighter’, just as what you consider substantive, the reader deems nothing more than yada yada, Your right to say it will be defended more-so by those you decry than those you celebrate. In the present day, the threat to our democracy lies not with Trump, but with those who oppose him, and the moral and ethical turpitude they have and are willing to stoop to in order to do so. It is what it is.

        2. “Gov. DeSantis’ violent attack on Dr. Fauci “

Dennis, are you using your normal hyperbole or did DeSantis violently attack Dr. Fauci with a gun or a knife?

Fauci attacked the entire population of the United States and elsewhere.

        3. The threat to democracy are those who used Department of Justice resources to give the illusion of credibility to the Russians®™ Stole the 2016 Election campaign.

    4. JT, a district supervisor might not have reviewed the video but that doesn’t mean teachers didn’t watch it first in preparation for student responses. I have no problem with the content. Let the victim decide whether or not he or she wants police called. It’s about harassments not physical assaults. I recall police saying only Gabby Petito admitted assault against her would be murderer. That’s what happens when criminals lie. But Gabby was white so she wasn’t arrested. Instead police helped her by separating her for one night. Ignoring the obvious that she would have been safer had she been arrested. But that wouldn’t have been just either because Gabby was the victim. Events like the ones described in the Denver school video weren’t as serious as that. But also, we cannot deny the roaches have come crawling out of the woodwork in recent years. And I’ll add, it doesn’t impact only minorities. It also occurs in our political divisiveness. I find it peculiar how much wanting to defend the helpless makes some right wingers go bombastic. This is how I interpret this post, despite JT’s educated and eloquent writing style.

      1. Did you watch the video? There are photos of people holding up signs stating that silence = violence. The video is muddying the water as to what constitutes assault. The video is terrible besides that–layered with manipulative content both from the speaker and the selected images. Nice disinformation/propaganda piece perhaps.

    5. Mr. McIntyre says “The GOP has a short memory. Many GOP members of Congress took advantage of the PPP program.”

Sorry, this is far from a valid comparison. PPP money was needed to keep business from going out of business because of government actions that were either forcing them to shut down or drastically hurting their opportunity to do business. Without PPP businesses would have closed down permanently and/or laid off workers on an even grander scale than actually occurred. There was a real risk of the economy totally collapsing. That is why PPP was a non-partisan bill. Student loan debt, which is carried by a demographic that is showing very healthy employment rates, is not putting the greater economy at risk. Nor was the situation forced on them by the government. You’re not even comparing apples to oranges. You are comparing horse manure to a respirator.

    6. Once again Dennis McIntyre misses the point. Whats going on here is an indoctrination of the students to hate the police by the Denver school district. It’s not the only example of grooming the young that has occurred in the nation. The school district said they didn’t realize what was in the indoctrination film but such propaganda directed toward our young people has been going on for a long time. Has anyone noticed that no one is now saying that CRT is not part of the school curriculum? There is a noticeable pattern. First deny, then denigrate and when found out make it disappear from the news without an apology. Same pattern applied to the Hunter laptop. First deny, then denigrate and when found out to have effected an election never apologize just show your FBI badge and say “you better step down boy”.

    7. Your “opinion” what that’s worth, is formed using one side of the issue rather than understanding the issue in context. You are suffering from TDS, you hate a man you have no way of knowing on any other level than what anyone else. You outsource your information gathering to media outlets who have an agenda that you certainly do not understand. You are a useful idiot.

  13. I have no doubt this video was previewed before showing it to the students. Probably on the recommendation of studimoron. And they knew the narrative was total BS, they couldn’t even defend it. I bet they haven’t been required to correct their mistake.

  14. I note from the video that she would not even have a witness ask the victim if they would like the police called. Not giving a victim the choice says all that needs to be said about the social justice warrior’s agenda. Ignore the police, if you cannot defund them.
