The appointment of MSNBC analyst Jeremy Bash to the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board triggered an outcry in Washington given Bash’s role in denying the legitimacy of the Hunter Biden laptop as “Russian disinformation.” Bash was not only one of more than 50 former intelligence officials who signed a letter dismissing the Hunter Biden laptop story before the 2020 presidential election, but he took to cable news to assure the public that there is nothing to it. Bash is not alone in the Administration as high-ranking officials who pushed such false claims to help get President Biden elected.
For those of us who have written about the laptop for two years, it has been a constant barrage of criticism of spreading “Russian disinformation” or discussing fake emails.
Notably, the Biden family never outright denied that the laptop belonged to Hunter. They just kept repeating that experts like Bash said that this was likely Russian disinformation. It did not matter that recipients of the emails confirmed the authenticity of the messages detailing extensive influence peddling schemes by the Biden family. The Biden campaign assembled the usual list of experts to shut off debate by declaring that this was all false. It was a mantra from President Biden to a legion of reporters. As Biden stated
“There are 50 former national intelligence folks who said that what he’s accusing me of is a Russian plant. [F]ive former heads of the CIA, both parties, say what he’s saying is a bunch of garbage.”
Bash was one of the most vocal from that letter in assuring voters that this was the suspected work of Russian intelligence despite the overlap with what we already knew about Biden influence peddling schemes. The press ran with that account despite the determination of American intelligence that it was not Russian disinformation.
Some were more honest, or at least forthright, than others. Washington Post columnist Thomas Rid wrote that “We must treat the Hunter Biden leaks as if they were a foreign intelligence operation — even if they probably aren’t.”
Bash not only spread that false story but seemed to mock the laptop as transparently false:
Bash is not alone in “making his bones” in this way. Biden selected Jake Sullivan as his National Security Adviser despite his own history of spreading false claims for political purposes. Not only did Sullivan push the false collusion claim but it is the basis of an ongoing criminal investigation of Special Counsel John Durham.
On July 28, 2016, then-CIA Director John Brennan briefed President Obama on Hillary Clinton’s alleged plan to tie Donald Trump to Russia as “a means of distracting the public from her use of a private email server.” Obama reportedly was told how Clinton allegedly approved “a proposal from one of her foreign policy advisers to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by the Russian security service.”
The Hillary Clinton campaign then pushed the Steele Dossier and Alfa bank allegations just days later.
The Alfa Bank false story was pushed by Clinton’s top campaign adviser, Jake Sullivan. Sullivan declared at the time: “This could be the most direct link yet between Donald Trump and Moscow. Computer scientists have uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank.” Sullivan added that he could “only assume federal authorities will now explore this direct connection between Trump and Russia as part of their existing probe into Russia’s meddling in our elections.”
Even the Biden Administration’s claimed campaign against disinformation favored those who spread disinformation on his son’s influence peddling. Nina Jankowicz as the controversial pick to head the new Disinformation Governance Board was one of those spreading the claim that the laptop was Russian disinformation before the election.
Similarly, Biden brought in others who showed the same willingness to ignore the obvious for the opportune. He made Kate Bedingfield a top campaign aide and then a top White House aide. Bedingfield was notorious for attacking any of us who pursued the story before the election as “amplifying Russian misinformation.”
Former Biden Press Secretary Jen Psaki and current Domestic Policy Council director Susan Rice also spread the claim that the laptop was fake and planted by Russians. So did White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates and staff secretary Neera Tanden.
What is most striking about Sullivan and Bash is that the false intelligence claims were specifically used for political advantage. They did so despite American intelligence officials saying that they saw no evidence of Russian disinformation and critics pointing out the overlap with known facts and communications. They pushed the false claims to dismiss the scandal before the 2020 election and it worked. It worked not only for Biden but for those who pushed the story.
Both national security officials showed at a minimum poor judgment and at worse a knowing disregard for the facts. Yet, they were embraced by President Biden as precisely the type of advisers that he needed on our national security. Neither have been pressed by the media on this issue. Indeed, the media was a willing ally in the effort.
Ironically, Bash told MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace that the laptop story “looks like Russian intelligence…walks like Russian intelligence…talks like Russian intelligence . . . a classic Russian playbook disinformation campaign.” Yet, it was the letter, the media, and such public declarations that were part of a classic disinformation campaign and it succeeded before the election. And now so has Jeremy Bash.

Professor Turley singled out nine Biden affiliates (Jake Sullivan, Nina Jankowicz, Kate Bedingfield, Jen Psaki, Susan Rice, Andrew Bates, Neera Tandenhow) who pushed “Russian disinformation” narrative with two (Jeremy Bash, John Brennan) signed the intel letter. As did James Clapper, Mike Hayden, and Leon Panetta.

Jonathan: I doubt most Americans will be thinking about Hunter Biden when they go to the polls in November. They have other concerns. But by continuing to gin up the Hunter Biden “scandal” it serves the purpose of trying to undermine Joe Biden’s chances for re-election in 2024. If the GOP takes back control of the House they have said they will appoint a Special House Committee to investigate the Bidens. No doubt they will ask you to testify and you will be able to lay out your entire case. So, be patient, your time may come. In the meantime let’s move on to some other important developments in connection with the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago.
In a previous column (8/11) you said that all the material Trump took back was kept in a storage room and Trump agreed to “add a specified lock on the room”. After the FBI search you cite Eric Trump who claimed his father’s “office was ransacked” but the FBI found “nothing in the safe”. Your implication was clear. Everything was safely locked up in the storage room. You conclude your column by saying that if a criminal case is brought against Trump “the empty safe at Mar-a-Lago could become the most indelible and embarrassing image since Al Capone’s safe”. It turns out these false claims are built on a sand castle that gets washed away at the first tide.
In response to Trump’s request for a Special Master, the DOJ made a court filing yesterday in opposition saying it uncovered efforts by Trump to obstruct the investigation saying “government records were likely concealed and removed” from the storage room. During the 8/8 search the FBI seized 33 boxes containing 100 classified records. In its filing the DOJ even submitted a photo of some of the material displayed on a carpet inside the residence–some marked “Top Secret//SCI”. The FBI found material stashed in Trump’s residence office. No mention of a “ransacked” safe. During the June visit by investigators Trump lawyers assured that “there were no records stored in any private office space or other location at the Premises…”. Turns out that was a big fat lie and Trump’s legal team is in deep trouble.
Now the 64 dollar Q is why would Trump would continue to keep official records at Mar-a-Lago when he knew he was not entitled to keep them. He knew the FBI/DOJ and the National Archives were seeking an immediate return of all the material. Trump thought, and still thinks, he is above the law. He still thinks he is the “legitimate” president. Now with all his resources why didn’t Trump ask his daughter and Jared to store what he wanted to keep at their nearby residence–for “safe keeping”? But that would have been an admission by Trump he had no right to keep the records. I think Trump kept the material because he thought he could “monetize” it–use it for some economic or personal advantage in 2024. He simply decided to defy the law.
All along you claim there is no evidence of any “intent” by Trump to obstruct the FBI/DOJ investigation. I think that claim was washed out by the the tide yesterday.

drsamberman: I’m lost. Please explain how a “Nigerian Prince and his cashier’s checks” have anything to do with the subject of the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago. I don’t what universe you live in but you need to look at the FBI website that lays out the requirements for taking photos of a crime scene. The protocol is elaborate and detailed–including what kind of camera to use, how photos are to preserved, etc. The protocol goes on for pages. In the photo the FBI took of docs taken from Trump’s office it took pains not to expose any classified material, just the cover pages. One of the purposes of the photo was to show the docs were retrieved from Trump’s residence office and that none of the docs were “declassified”.
There’s a good reason the FBI strictly followed protocols. The Rules of Evidence dictate that photos must be “material, relevant, competent, accurate, free of distortion, and non-inflammatory”. It doesn’t make sense the FBI would plant or mishandle evidence uncovered at Trump’s residence and jeopardize a prosecution in such a high profile case. If you believe all the nonsense from Turley or what you hear on Fox you the one who is “gullible”!

Robert C. O’Brien, the national security adviser, presented the warning about Mr. Giuliani to Mr. Trump in December. Two former officials gave conflicting accounts. There has never been a rational basis for denying the genuineness of the laptop. For example, In October 2020, the lawyer for the computer repairman released a Statement that revealed that his client had a contract signed by “Hunter Biden” in April 2019 for repair of the laptop. Were we supposed to believe that Putin created, 18 months earlier, a fake laptop and a fake “Hunter Biden” in order to place the laptop with the repairman? For what conceivable purpose? The same Statement asserted that Hunter Biden’s attorney had contacted the repairman to discuss the laptop: “1. Of course, they didn’t need to because they already knew it was true. .
When the laptop first materialized. there is reason to be skeptical – journalists, and the FBI should always start with skepticism.
They were required to start with skepticism. They were required to be skeptical of the Steele Dossier.
The next step is to authenticate the contents. In the case of the laptop that is quite easy. Much of the contents are things that are easy to verify.
Are pictures altered ? When were they taken ? Where ? Most computer images today contain meta data telling us exactly when and where they were taken – so were those pictured anywhere near where the picture was taken at the time ?
Emails involve multiple parties – will the other party confirm the email ?
More recently deleted data from the laptop was recovered that allowed hackers to access hunter Biden’s icloud account and download more recent revalations – that process also acts to validate the laptop – the icloud account and the latop are cryptographically linked. Hacking one from the others means eitherboth or neither are authentic.
Regardless, Journalists, and FBI agents go through this process to validate information all the time.
One of the damning aspects of the FBI circulating claims that the laptop was disinformation is that within a very short time the FBI should have known much better.
SACA Thibault could have contacted Tony bobolinsky almost as soon as they had the laptop and confired that he sent of received the emails on the laptop that have his address on them.
The Media could have done the same. The NYPost did. Glenn Greenwald did, left wing nut journalists and the FBI did not.
Validating only a small portion fo the content – and that is quite easy increases the odds that even what you can not validate is authentic. It is very quick to get to the point were everything is presumed authentic.
That said – if the laptop is russian disinformation – then there are few choices.
Either the russians had to manufacture everything – which is an impossible task, the quantity of information on this is huge,
and if anything is successfully challenged everything comes under suspicion.
Or the Russians had access to lots of Hunter authentic information and they carefully added a few damning peices of disinformation. The problem with that is the damning peices of information have been authenticated.
Think back to the world 20 years ago and earlier watch the movies, go down memory lane and it is apparent that the United States and people of other once free nations are under the attack from every direction. Jackson Brown’s song “The Pretender” hit it pretty close, “Where the ads take aim, and lay their claim to the heart and the soul of the spender….”
These guys are not only weirdos but they have ill intent. I recently read a book, “The CIA as Organized Crime.” If 1/100th of the things the author Douglas Valentine described is true, we the citizens would be advised to keep up our guard, test anything that is said on the “news” and do everything to verify any information coming through the so-called news outlets.
These past few years are nothing short of bizarre. The main tactics of those would radicalize are to destroy the fabric of a person’s life. They attack family, church, synagog and temple, history, social norms, morality. The hit from all angles and at a metered and calculated pace. Their objective is to keep their victims off guard, to mix them up, mix truth and untruth. They use linked statements and push them off as a single concept. They limit information. The information that they cannot limit, they work diligently to varnish and warp so that the victim is always one step away from connecting the dots. They like noise. Lots of noise. They don’t want us to think, to think for ourselves, to engage our brains, to make our own decisions instead of falling lockstep into what we are told to do and told to think. They are clever and determined.
Once they have severed the tethers that hold a society and the individual together, they can carefully, patiently feed the victim half truths and false information. I read this statement in a book I read a couple of years ago. “One can find truth in partial truth as long as they do not take it as whole truth. Partial truth taken as whole truth is untruth.”
King Solomon penned these words three thousand yeas ago, “Remove not the ancient landmarks which your fathers have set.”
A few years ago, I went through the National Archeological Museum in Naples, Italy. In it contains may of the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum that were well preserved in the ash for two thousand years. The medical equipment, plumbing valves, and much of their technology were equivalent to and some exceeding what my grandparents knew. Those who came before us had much experience and insight into the heart and soul of the human. They understood mankind’s capability to do evil. Yet, what we see today, is a strong push by a rabid and radical fringe who apparently hate this nation, what we stand for and the concept of the empowered individual.
All one has to do is turn off the TV, unplug from social media and check out history books and those who came before us speak us with clear and unambiguous warning.

This is a question which my father-in-law put so often in conversation. This, motivated by his great dismay, at what was happening to his beloved United States of America. This is the lesson from Auschwitz-Birkenau, and the other detritus of the Third Reich which we explored during our pilgrimage through Central Europe. We have been to Dachau and have walked some of the battlefields of WWII where my late father-in-law fought as an infantryman in Europe. Sobering is too weak a word to describe the experiences. For you, your wife and her family to actually walk through afterwards must have been and indescribable flood of emotions.
My wife and I read on the subject of what took place before, during and after World War 2. So tragic the evil that mankind can unleash when left unchallenged. So many lessons to learn.
I cannot even imagine how palpable your family conversations were about their memories. Have you documented some of their stories? I wish the younger generation and many of the older generation could truly learn from the harsh and brutal lessons such as your direct family experienced and apply them to our present world, before it is too late.

Mom’s cousin, Herman Kahan, whose boyhood friend was Elie Weisel and survived by caprice as well, also wrote a book. It’s entitled “The Fire and the Light” Herman’s father and Mom’s father were brothers, living in different towns at the time. As to what our folks witnessed, there are at least 5 anecdotes which I can pretty much re-tell. Everyone in the group we traveled with had a story. This included a dairy farmer and his wife from New Zealand. They were not Jewish, She was Polish and her father had been conscripted into the Polish army and was imprisoned at Auschwitz. There were Australians, one of whom came to find the grave of his grandfather buried in the Jewish cemetery in Warsaw where the statue commemorating the life and sacrifice of Janusz Korczak stands.
