“Be Afraid, Be Actually Afraid”: Reporters Panic at the Thought of Twitter Restoring Free Speech Protections

Twitter Logo“Be afraid, be actually afraid.” Those words from former Politico Magazine editor Garrett M. Graff captures the hyperventilation in the media this week. No it is not Vladimir Putin’s threat of unleashing a nuclear war or the word that our national debt has reached a staggering $31 trillion. No, it is the news that Elon Musk may go forward with the purchase of Twitter and . . . [trigger warning] . . . free speech protections might be restored on the platform. The pearl-clutching of various media and academic figures shows how engrained the censorship culture has become in the United States.

After Musk indicated that he was going forward, the Twitter stock quickly soared. The news that Musk might bring an end to Twitter’s extensive censorship system had previously drawn people back to the platform. However, the media is in full panic mode that the control over speech could be loosened with Musk. Twitter employees also previously panicked at the thought that they might lose some of their control over the speech of others.

NBC News reporter Ben Collins quickly raised the most immediate concern that the sudden ability to speak freely on Twitter could impact the midterm elections: “For those of you asking: Yes, I do think this site can and will change pretty dramatically if Musk gets full control over it. No, there is no immediate replacement. If it gets done early enough, based on the people he’s aligned with, yes, it could actually affect midterms.”

Consider that for a second: the loss of control over political speech could mean a loss of control over the midterm elections.  There is, of course, no concern by Collins that Twitter (and other social media companies) have long been “aligned” with Democrats and the Biden Administration.

NPR editor Neela Banerjee retweeted and echoed his concern about “the broader implications for the rest of us of a Musk takeover of Twitter.” Others joined in on the collective panic that there could be a loss of control over what people say on social media.

BBC journalist Dickens Olewe warned that “Guardrails will be dropped, misinfo & conspiracy theories will thrive. No functional alternatives available, this is it: a complete destruction of the global public square. Been nice y’all.”  In other words, free speech protections will lead to the destruction of “the global public square” by losing control of who can speak or what people can say.

PoliticusUSA head Sarah Reese Jones seemed to move from the desperate to the outright delusional: “Before 2020, Facebook deplatformed progressives, then it came for mainstream media and elevated only radicalized conservatives. Cut to 2022, we know Elon Musk plans to do same with Twitter. We know how damaging it will be.Tech giants pose ongoing threat to western democracy.”

  1. I think it would be instructive for the newly-established Musk regime heading up Twitter, when that becomes official to ask EVERY Twitter employee this question:

In your own handwritten words (not email, not off a typewriter, not off a copy machine — HANDwritten), give Mr. Musk 3 reasons why you should not be fired.

  2. EQUITY – FREEDOM FROM BIAS

Racial Equity is an oxymoronic contradiction in terms.

Using the word “race” introduces bias wherein equity requires its absence.

Who listens to these shameless dependent parasites and why, when all they deserve is your ignorance?

Freedom is the complete absence of affirmative action, quotas, forced busing, unfair “Fair Housing” laws, discriminatory “Non-Discrimination” laws, public housing, WIC, SNAP, HAMP, HARP, HUD, HHS, Obamacare, etc.

The control of free speech by Twitter is frivolous and immaterial; Twitter prevalence is nothing more than a failure by conservatives to compete in free media markets.

The total abrogation of the Constitution, the gross violation of Federal Law and the complete conversion of America to tyranny beginning after only 71 years of freedom stands to this day?

Unconstitutional Roe v Wade was retroactively corrected by a decision of the Supreme Court.

The nullification of the Constitution and American freedom by the executive branch, 1860, and subsequent administrations must be corrected through Judicial Review by the Supreme Court.

The construction of the wholly unconstitutional American welfare state by communists (liberals, progressives, socialists, democrats, RINOs) is pure totalitarian putrefaction.

The Supreme Court must fulfill its sworn oath and duty to support the Constitution and vigorously exercise its power of Judicial Review, revealed 219 years ago.

The Supreme Court does not require “cases”; the Supreme Court has the power of Judicial Review over all acts of the executive and legislative branches; time does not bear.

Recently, the Supreme Court acted retroactively by 50 years to correct the unconstitutional Roe v Wade.

The Supreme Court must now act retroactively up to 150 years to eliminate the unconstitutional welfare state, unconstitutional taxation for things other than debt, defense and infrastructure (i.e. general Welfare – ALL well advance – as roads, water, post, electricity, internet, police, fire, etc.), regulation other than that which is enumerated as the value of money, commerce among the States, and land and naval Forces, violations of the absolute right to private property, etc., ad infinitum.

The Supreme Court must now act retroactively through Judicial Review of American history to abolish irrefutably unconstitutional matriculation affirmative action, grade-inflation affirmative action, employment affirmative action, quotas, welfare, food stamps, minimum wage, rent control, social services, forced busing, public housing, utility subsidies, WIC, SNAP, TANF, HAMP, HARP, TARP, HHS, HUD, EPA, Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Labor, Energy, Obamacare, Social Security, Social Security Disability, Social Security Supplemental Income, Medicare, Medicaid, “Fair Housing” laws, “Non-Discrimination” laws, public worker unions, etc.

That one is a bleeding-heart communist (liberal, progressive, socialist, democrat, RINO) who loves to steal and redistribute other people’s money and success, does not make those crimes constitutional – voluntary, temporary, free market charity is honorable, noble and sufficient to benefit legal American citizens.

America was designed and engineered to be free, not subjugated by communists, not subject to the “dictatorship of the proletariat” or any other despotic entity.

The judicial branch, the Supreme Court, and Judicial Review exist to keep it that way.

    1. Dear Justices, you don’t need a “case!”

You need to get to work.

      MARBURY V. MADISON, 1801

Marbury v. Madison (1803) was a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that established for the first time that federal courts had the power to overturn an act of Congress on the ground that it violated the U.S. Constitution.

      – history.com
      __________

      MARBURY V. MADISON, 1801

The Court found that Madison’s refusal to deliver the commission was illegal, but did not order Madison to hand over Marbury’s commission via writ of mandamus. Instead, the Court held that the provision of the Judiciary Act of 1789 enabling Marbury to bring his claim to the Supreme Court was itself unconstitutional, since it purported to extend the Court’s original jurisdiction beyond that which Article III, Section 2, established.

Marshall expanded that a writ of mandamus was the proper way to seek a remedy, but concluded the Court could not issue it. Marshall reasoned that the Judiciary Act of 1789 conflicted with the Constitution. Congress did not have power to modify the Constitution through regular legislation because Supremacy Clause places the Constitution before the laws.

In so holding, Marshall established the principle of judicial review, i.e., the power to declare a law unconstitutional.

Changes in Burnout and Satisfaction With Work-Life Integration in Physicians Over the First 2 Years of the COVID-19 Pandemic

A dramatic increase in burnout and decrease in satisfaction with WLI occurred in US physicians between 2020 and 2021. Differences in mean depression scores were modest suggesting the increase in physician distress was overwhelmingly work-related. Given the association of physician burnout with quality of care, turnover, and reductions in work effort, these findings have profound implications for the US healthcare system.

Shanafelt TD. et al. (2022) Changes in Burnout and Satisfaction With Work-Life Integration in Physicians and the General US Working Population Between 2011 and 2020. Mayo Clin Proc. 97(3), 491-506.

    1. If I had been forced to lie about covid and vaccines the way doctors have been, that certainly would affect my satisfaction with work.

  6. Oh the irony. NBC is saying that allowing free speech will affect the election outcome in a negative way. What they didn’t say is that censorship is affecting the outcome in their favor. The dumbing down of America is complete.

  7. This is illustrative of the censorship that is an ongoing daily occurrence. Dr’s have sued the FDA over their ban of Dr.’s prescribing Ivermectin, for anything but parasites.

If you google this, the entire first page of results has ZERO Main stream news articles about the law suit. To call attention to the law suit, reveals the FDA actively spread disinformation during covid. Stripped Dr’s of their power to treat patients.

“The FDA also can not advise whether a patient should take an approved drug for a particular purpose. Those decisions fall within the scope of the doctor-patient relationship,” the complaint says. “Attempts by the FDA to influence or intervene in the doctor-patient relationship amount to interference with the practice of medicine, the regulation of which is — and always has been — reserved to states.”

  8. The totalitarian mind has throughout history lamented any occurrence that would rest away it’s control. History also tells us what happens when the totalitarian mind is allowed to limit what we see or hear. The totalitarian mind has literally stomped out its opposition in the past. It screams in agony when it’s application of the boot is hindered. We should hope that Elon will put the force of the boot to rest.

  9. What does it say about an American political party that is aligned with a fear of free speech?

    1. They have lost their minds?

In their defense, they also cannot define what a women is, getting 6 year olds to question their own sex is okay, teens and pre-teens should get puberty blockers and surgery to change their sex, mis-use of a pronoun is assault, de-funding the police is a good idea, same with no cash bail, and they wet themselves at the sight of pop-tart that has been eaten into the shape of a gun.

    1. Mobile phones the bane of our existence. Nobody talks to anyone any more. We’ve lost our ability to conversef going back to phones with wires??.

  10. For those that ave had difficulty understanding Trump’s motives for his recent actions.

Former president also suggests U.S. could starve Putin’s war machine by ramping up energy production, driving down price of oil.

He also demonstrates how the Biden administration is promoting war and a potential nuclear conflict.

  11. why is it so vital and necessary for the combined monolithic apparatus of government, corporations, and NGOs, to brute force censor everyone while decimating the careers and reputations of the dissenters? Here is why:

The reason the First Amendment is prime directive order 1, is because it is the most important freedom we have for the same reason it is the first target an adversary subverts, disrupts, and destroys during a crime, a war, or a takeover—preventing a target from assembling, communicating, and organizing a response to an assault grants an enormous advantage to the aggressors.

This is and has been occurring all across the globe since the minute this COVID-19 fraud was propagated to every corner of the earth.

The Second Amendment is second because it is the remedy for anyone trying to subvert the First.

The fog of this war is purposefully thick—a massive labyrinth filled with wrong turns, dead ends, and long, interesting paths to nowhere—relentless discombobulation are important tentpoles of demoralization and destabilization.

  12. Meanwhile, there is not a single democratic candidate who has asked Joe Biden to help them campaign. They are running the other way. Many are in a quandary about how to distance themselves from the far left party leaders and appeal their constituents who are hurting, trying to pay bills, put food on the table, fill up their car.

The wealthiest are happy to inflict pain on us poor surfs but watch what happened when a fraction of immigrants came to their playground up north. They deported them in less than 24 hours. Boom! They were out of there in an instant!

The radical left “regressive” leaders must work hand in glove with the largest media outlets to squash free speech and carry on their one-sided narrative. In my state, the big dark money operatives targeted the moderate Democrats and squashed them in the last election and replaced them with far left replacements. These are not the Truman, JFK, Carter, Clinton Democrats. These are the Marxists radicals who aim to tear down this nation and civil society. They don’t care about individual rights.

The 3 richest Americans own more assets than the lowest 50% of the population. 26 of the richest people have more wealth than the lowest 50% (3.8 billion). Think about how much raw power lies in their hands. Really think about this. Unprecedented and dangerous.

“A U.S. official said the White House is “having a spasm & panicking.”

“In 2020, Democrats blocked Trump’s proposal to buy American oil at $24 a barrel.

Yesterday, a Biden official disclosed a secret offer to buy OPEC+ oil at $80 a barrel in exchange for not cutting production.

Biden’s efforts backfired. The US is weakened.https://t.co/ygwOZqPIBk

“Rep. Steve Scalise, the second-ranking House Republican, tweeted the epic fail of the Biden admin.

Let’s be clear about what happened:

      1. Biden destroyed America’s oil/gas industry and made us dependent on OPEC again.

      2. Biden begged OPEC to produce more oil.

      3. OPEC is doing the opposite—cutting output by 2 million barrels a day.

Total failure. OPEC is laughing at him.
      — Steve Scalise (@SteveScalise) October 5, 2022”

The US is still acting as if we were still in a US/West lead uni-polar world.
      We are not.
We are now in a multi-polar world, where both our enemies and our frenemies see the writing on the wall and are pivoting to insulate themselves or take advantage of the new emerging geopolitical stage.

      1. “Biden destroyed America’s oil/gas industry . . .”

It is hard to imagine a more evil domestic policy than destroying your own country’s energy industry, and thus impoverishing your own citizens.

  13. They rant about “disinformation” and “conspiracy theories running rampant” but they never see the log in their own eye. What was Russiagate if not one big conspiracy theory conjured up by Clinton and her evil trolls? What was hiding Hunter’s laptop, if not a conspiracy? Every word that comes out of Biden’s and Pelosi’s mouths is disinformation. We are dealing with people who are so far removed from reality, so deep into their delusional echo chamber, that they have lost the ability to see and analyze their own actions and words. This does not augur well for any future reconciliation.

  14. I think it’s great I would love to see Elon musk on Twitter and restore free-speech to the public. That’s what it’s all about our first amendment being restored and Elon musk is the man to do it

    1. Keep on mind that Musk supported obama at one time. He is a businessman first and an ideologue after that. Don’t count on him to, alobe, restore free speech. Hopefully he will see the tide turning against the far left and hop on board the ride.

      1. Agreed. Sadly, he’s our only hope (for the moment). Musk SEEMS to have learned from recent events. I’m (very very) cautiously optimistic.

        1. I’m slightly more than cautiously optimistic, because as a businessman, Musk ought to be able to see that Democrat policies are hurting his business (and incidentally the people he sells to, and incidentally affecting the mental processes of the people he wants to hire). This wasn’t always the case – Democrats are more into subsidies for greenness than Republicans, and Tesla benefited from that – but instead of building a Model T, he built a Mustang, and people seem to be willing to pay for the cool factor he’s successfully created in his cars.

Ultimately I think he’s a pragmatist, like William James in the field of psychology, and like James he’s going to go with “that which works.”

Which is a reasonable, though not complete, definition of American conservatism: going with that which works. What makes the definition more complete is two more factors: adherence to an originalist view of the Constitution, as informed by the cogent and lasting writings of the Founders and their intellectual heirs, and awareness and support of community. (That’s a significant place where conservatism and libertarianism part ways, ISTM. Libertarianism promotes individualism over all else; conservatism doesn’t, though it values individual rights and individual initiative greatly.)

  15. It will be an interesting question for intellectual historians to explain why American “intellectuals”, who so recently professed to be “first amendment absolutists”, suddently embraced the cause of thought control. There are many possible explanations. Two seem most important, both rooted in human nature. First, the urge to control the lives of others. Now that the federal government has strectched its tendrels over every aspect of life, political progessives can sense the possibility of “completing the circle” and stamping out any independence of thought or action. In the new world of total control, the intellectuals will have comfortable and prestigious positions in the Ministry of Good Information. Second, there remains another desire: moral guidance in life. Traditionally, religion has mainly served this purpose, and “Men of the Cloth” have been figures of distinction and authority. But with the decline of Chirisitanity in the West, there is a reborn longing for direction. Fortunately, the Ministry of Social Justice, comprising the NYT, the WP, NPR, and major university faculties, will provide a detailed blueprint for living our lives, including identification of “bad people” who must be reviled, it not destroyed. But the masses will not really accept the MSJ until dissenters are completely silenced.

  16. “If you think Elon Musk giving Trump, Project Veritas and Alex Jones a bigger social platform to manipulate will benefit the future of free speech, you’re totally delusional,” Southern Poverty Law Center senior investigative reporter Michael Edison Hayden tweeted.

I guess my question is how would more free speech not benefit free speech? If I have the freedom to be an idiot, you have the freedom to call me an idiot. If I have the freedom to label my “disinformation” fact, you have the freedom to fact check me. I understand why the “pearl clutchers” want to silence free speech, but I don’t understand why the beneficiaries support the silencing.

    1. I think the real problem is not what Trump, PV, or Jones say, as you point out, we can make our own decisions, make up our own minds, come to our own conclusions.
It is the fact sometimes Trump said/tweeted something that actually made sense. PV has posted undercover videos that expose things of interest (the recent one about a teacher who wants to indoctrinate kids to bring the system down). Jones, he is a wackadoodle.
But people like Michael Edison Hayden do not want people to think for themselves. They want only one POV. Theirs. That is why they are so anti-1stA. They do not want any narrative but their own. And they call anyone who has the gall to think otherwise, as dangerous.
I am a free thinking American who questions their narrative.
      And that makes me dangerous.

  17. BBC journalist Dickens Olewe warned that “Guardrails will be dropped, misinfo & conspiracy theories will thrive. No functional alternatives available, this is it: a complete destruction of the global public square. Been nice y’all.”
