HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. We started the day with our annual Turley Turkey Bowl — running over 50 years of unbroken tradition. I am cooking our usual two turkeys: one on the grill being smoked and one in the oven.

Our Turkey bowl always features the Bears against Washington. I proudly coach the Bears. Unfortunately, this year went like much of the regular season. Washington won 6-0. However, the game was not without its controversies.

For example, Chicago put the ball under a baby and his mother walked to the end zone — a textbook NFL play. To our utter disgust and shock, Washington showed no concern for this innocent infant as they ran down the mother and touched them both out. It was like watching dingos at work on Australian outback. There is no decency left in sports. Both teams ultimately retired to an over-flowing table of donuts, hot chocolate, and other culinary delights.

Today are making our usual array of smoked and regular turkeys with an apple corn bread stuffing. We also have fresh-made cranberry, gravy, baked spinach, Waldorf salad, mashed potatoes, and other dishes. We also have an assortment of freshly made pies, including my favorite pumpkin pie.

So best wishes for a wonderful holiday from my family to your family. So Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

  1. Best Wishes to Professor Turley & his family & all here. Much appreciation for the insights & the support for our liberty !

  2. Happy Thanksgiving Professor Turley!
Thank you and Darren for your enormous effort to champion the cause of individual freedom and civil liberties.

Blessings to you and your family.

  3. Very thankful to the blawg and Prof. Turley for letting me share my typically inane, boisterous and blustering musings about life, the country and the law. Suzanne (and likely my clients) says its gives her a break. Happy Thanksgiving.

  4. Hate to be the bummer…my” jenny O” turned out like rubber. Mmm. But the sides were good. Yet her trackback gravy was so salty
……we didn’t eat it. But I am cool about Thanksgiving and totally hopeful. My boy brought home a. Girl that in in a phase…thinking she is a boy. She is the sweetest girl ever. With total female hips. I’d like to know who tried to convince this sweet girl…to pretend a boy….I got lead for that freak. Corrupting this woman.

  5. Love both those ‘Rockwells’. Kids like those didn’t need safe spaces. I grew up with their ilk. That kind of grit made celebrating this day possible. Blessings to all of you and yours. We yet but turn another page.

  6. Norman Rockwell, The Framers, The Constitution, The Bill of Rights, The Naturalization Acts of 1790, 1795, 1798 and 1802, The People, The Fifty States, Freedom, Mom and Apple Pie.

    That’s Something Worthy of Thanksgiving.

    That’s the Essence.

    That’s America!

  7. At my family’s Thanksgiving table when I was growing up, my father would read aloud from William Bradford’s journal.
It always inspired us to appreciate what the colonists had endured, and what we’d been given.
Thank you, Professor, for creating and sharing Res Ipsa.
    Happy Thanksgiving.

    1. The William Bradford’s journal.

      Nice Cindy.

Hope everyone, their families & friends have a very pleasant Thanksgiving weekend.

  8. Thank you for the blessing of this blog!

I’m so grateful for this one holiday dedicated to gratitude and giving thanks for our blessings, no matter how small and seemingly mundane.

    1. Eek. Not this blog, of course! Thinking of the sunshine and mild temperatures we enjoyed today. The kids tromped around in the woods and then threw the football around in the yard in bare feet. Quiet little blessings that deserve a bit of thanks, too.

      1. Hi Prairie Rose.

I’m glad to hear of real people/kids not having their faces planted in their phones all day & went outside. 😉

  9. Happy Thanksgiving , professor. Turley and to all the other posters on this blog.

  10. And thank you, Professor Turley and Darren. I know defending freedom can be a lonely battle on today’s campuses, which makes your efforts all the more appreciated.

  11. It’s Tanks Giving like when we gave the tanks to Churchill and he said Tanks! To Roosevelt

  12. Yes, Professor, we are thankful to you for putting together this marketplace of ideas and comments which, despite the few, is one of the best. I wish you had been teaching at GWLaw when I was there in the late 1950’s, but better late than never.

  13. You forgot to give thanks to God Almighty.
    Blessings to all

    Abraham Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation

I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eighth.

    1. Estovir……..Thankyou for this fascinating imformation…..especially the “thanksgiving” at our Texas treasure, Palo Duro Canyon.
Hope your Thanksgiving was a joyous one!

      1. Thank you Cindy. Each year we have alternate cultural Thanksgiving traditions. This year was all Cuban, and we had a blast cooking together, and thanking the Lord for our many gifts. The Psalms speak often of praising God, a theme I sadly only realized recently. So Im focusing! LOL

never heard of Hard Stick Canyon! I need to travel to TX sometime to get to know the terrain. All I know is DFW 🤠

        1. Estovir…….Yes, do visit Hard Stick Canyon!.Photos don’t do it justice. Then you could also visit Red Stick, La., etc. Really stick it to your travel agent…..LOL
St. Francis was a big fan of the Psalms, as you know. When I was involved with childrens music at the Episcopal church, we always celebrated St. Francis and his canticles/songs in a big way. The Episys love St Francis.
Well I’m envious of your Cuban feast! We need a recipe section on this blog. The Professor loves good food….I think he might be up for it?! 🙂

          1. Carpe Dinner indeed. Cute. I feel badly as it is for commenting on cell biology & immunology on this legal forum re: COVID and vaccines. However, I do enjoy the chit/chat that we all partake.

Cuban cooking is best exemplified by the Betty Crocker of Cuba, “Nitza Villapol”. Every Cuban wife swore by her methods, and thankfully my mother gifted me one of her books Cocina al minuto when I was in college.

Here is her famous Cuban roast pork recipe:

Her Coconut Cuban flan recipe is to to die for: http://www.guije.com/libros/cocina/postres/index.htm#cocoflan

All in Spanish but she uses fresh ingredients so it is worth the effort of translating. Disfrute! Enjoy!

            1. Estovir! Tienes swing, papi! And to stay true to the spirit of this post: Thank you…..
              Thanksgiving abounds.
I will share with our daughter, a flamenco dancer who cooked/baked professionally in NYC… and introduced us to this masterpiece:

    2. “You forgot to give thanks to God Almighty.”

You forgot to give thanks to America’s producers — the actual creators of wealth.

  14. I would imagine that Jonathan Turley and I are of the same generation. Maintaining traditions is becoming less and less important with each successive generation, and its up to us old-timers (sorry, Jonathan!) to insist that they survive intact.

BTW, the Norman Rockwell art is a classic, and I love that it is included. Critics may decry that it doesn’t show a “blended” family or some other such nonsense, but it was painted by Rockwell as a depiction of his OWN family — not as a representative example of 1940s America generally.

    Happy Thanksgiving Jonathan!

    1. “Maintaining traditions is becoming less and less important with each successive generation, and its up to us old-timers”

Communicating the meaning underlying the traditions will help them continue.

I love traditions, too. I hope my husband and I have been successful in conveying the meaning and value of family traditions to our kids.

That Norman Rockwell painting is one of my favorites, too.

  15. I will wait patiently here while my turkey burns for all the Turley haters to tell us why what he wrote is unfair, pro-Putin, whatever they usually say. Go ahead, I’m waiting…

  16. We’ve handed off the baton to our daughter this year. It’s great! All the food, none of the cleanup.

  17. Thank you, Jonathan! I’m thankful for many things, but your site ranks up there with the best of them.
