Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. We started the day with our annual Turley Turkey Bowl — running over 50 years of unbroken tradition. I am cooking our usual two turkeys: one on the grill being smoked and one in the oven.
Our Turkey bowl always features the Bears against Washington. I proudly coach the Bears. Unfortunately, this year went like much of the regular season. Washington won 6-0. However, the game was not without its controversies.
For example, Chicago put the ball under a baby and his mother walked to the end zone — a textbook NFL play. To our utter disgust and shock, Washington showed no concern for this innocent infant as they ran down the mother and touched them both out. It was like watching dingos at work on Australian outback. There is no decency left in sports. Both teams ultimately retired to an over-flowing table of donuts, hot chocolate, and other culinary delights.
Today are making our usual array of smoked and regular turkeys with an apple corn bread stuffing. We also have fresh-made cranberry, gravy, baked spinach, Waldorf salad, mashed potatoes, and other dishes. We also have an assortment of freshly made pies, including my favorite pumpkin pie.

……we didn’t eat it. But I am cool about Thanksgiving and totally hopeful. My boy brought home a. Girl that in in a phase…thinking she is a boy. She is the sweetest girl ever. With total female hips. I’d like to know who tried to convince this sweet girl…to pretend a boy….I got lead for that freak. Corrupting this woman.
Love both those ‘Rockwells’. Kids like those didn’t need safe spaces. I grew up with their ilk. That kind of grit made celebrating this day possible. Blessings to all of you and yours. We yet but turn another page.

It always inspired us to appreciate what the colonists had endured, and what we’d been given.

Thank you Cindy. Each year we have alternate cultural Thanksgiving traditions. This year was all Cuban, and we had a blast cooking together, and thanking the Lord for our many gifts. The Psalms speak often of praising God, a theme I sadly only realized recently. So Im focusing! LOL

St. Francis was a big fan of the Psalms, as you know. When I was involved with childrens music at the Episcopal church, we always celebrated St. Francis and his canticles/songs in a big way. The Episys love St Francis.

Cuban cooking is best exemplified by the Betty Crocker of Cuba, “Nitza Villapol”. Every Cuban wife swore by her methods, and thankfully my mother gifted me one of her books Cocina al minuto when I was in college.

Thanksgiving abounds.
I will share with our daughter, a flamenco dancer who cooked/baked professionally in NYC… and introduced us to this masterpiece:
“You forgot to give thanks to God Almighty.”
You forgot to give thanks to America’s producers — the actual creators of wealth.
I would imagine that Jonathan Turley and I are of the same generation. Maintaining traditions is becoming less and less important with each successive generation, and its up to us old-timers (sorry, Jonathan!) to insist that they survive intact.
BTW, the Norman Rockwell art is a classic, and I love that it is included. Critics may decry that it doesn’t show a “blended” family or some other such nonsense, but it was painted by Rockwell as a depiction of his OWN family — not as a representative example of 1940s America generally.

I love traditions, too. I hope my husband and I have been successful in conveying the meaning and value of family traditions to our kids.
