This week, the University of Pittsburgh was under fire from State Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes, who objected to conservative speakers, including competitive swimmer Riley Gaines, Daily Wire commentator Michael Knowles, and Daily Wire podcast host Cabot Phillips. Mayes’ objections reflect the growing anti-free speech movement, and its rationale of “speech-as-harm” that is sweeping the nation.
Mayes made her comments in a House Appropriations budget hearing, citing a petition titled “Hold the University Of Pittsburgh Accountable in Protecting LGBTQIA+ Individuals,” which had garnered thousands of signatures of people who seek to block opposing views from being heard at the university. The petition simply declares their views to be harmful and maintains that “this harassment and antagonism are not part of the exercise of free speech.”
Mayes objected that:
“It has come to my attention that three speakers who have crossed the line of free speech over into hate speech targeting transgender students and the transgender community, they’re coming to campus beginning this Friday. One of them saying essentially that transgender people should be eradicated
…So, Chancellor you’re allowing them to come on campus. How does this keep transgender students safe? ‘How does this keep LGBTQ+ students safe at my Alma Mater and how does this align with the values at the University of Pittsburgh and its commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity, and you know, making sure that it’s an inclusive place for all students.”
Chancellor Patrick Gallagher, however, responded that
“the university is a place of dialogue and in fact both constitutional and academic free speech are things that I am obligated to support. Which means that many of the rules governing, in this case extracurricular activities by registered student organizations has to be applied independent of the content of the events.”
He added “The one thing that makes this very challenging is there is a tendency to want to define what the university stands for by who’s allowed to speak on the campus and therein lies the problem.”
That only seemed to set off Mayes who declared:
“From here as the Representative and Pitt as part of my district I certainly echo my call for you to cancel the speakers who are coming to campus and I stand with the almost 11,000 students and supporters on campus who have asked you to do the same.”
So Mayes would have the university simply ban anyone like Gaines who questions the fairness of allowing transgender women to compete in sports with biological females. Gaines has been outspoken in her criticism of this trend since she tied with then-Penn swimmer Lia Thomas, who is transgender, at the NCAA championships last year.
The left has increasingly labeled anyone raising such views as hateful and has launched cancel campaigns against those who are declared “TERFs” for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists. The term is used for feminists who have voiced opposition to transgender policies and laws that they believe “erase” or “marginalize” biological women. The most famous such figure is author J.K. Rowling who has not only been the subject of a global cancel campaign but was listed by Buzzfeed with figures like cult leader Jim Jones, Benedict Arnold and O.J. Simpson as “villains.” Even a bar showing a Harry Potter game was recently targeted due to the association with Rowling.
On campus, the speech-as-harm rationale is used widely to curtail free speech, even in refusing to recognize free speech groups.

In practical terms, as a start, we should outlaw all gender-affirming care from anyone with a license to work granted by the government, including but not limited to teachers, counselors, nurses, doctors, and pharmacists. We should also outlaw gender-affirming care from any organization that receives government funding or an exemption from taxation, including but not limited to physicians’ practices, hospitals, childcare organizations, k-12 schools, universities, and churches.

There are ways to treat it, but ‘gender reassignment’ (cosmetic surgery) is not something you do for children. (Including hormone treatments )
Once a person is in their majority… and they have undergone psychiatric treatment, then they can make their own conscious decision.
That said, by allowing individuals to voice an opinion is not a hate crime as long as they are not advocating direct violence against someone.
The allegations where they are being asked to be blocked from speaking are overblown at best. Meaning that there is no argument that would justify in shutting this down.

Absolutely, gender dysphoria is a real medical condition. Something to mitigate and, perhaps, overcome.
Gender assignment surgery, hormone therapy, and the like for children should not be legal. Nor should gender assignment surgery, hormone therapy, and the like for adults be legal. Nor should extreme plastic surgery, such as that performed on Michaell Jackson, be legal for children or adults. The common thread in all of these is the corruption of the medical professions by allowing them to dramatically and permanently alter human bodies that have no defects while, at the same time, exposing patients to unnecessary risk. First, do no harm.
These two things go together, and are rising on the Left: pro-totalitarian, anti-human.

She misrepresented Knowles’ statement. He said the ideology should be eradicated, which would actually be in the best interests of the people involved. He never said the people should be eradicated, just the opposite.

The only hate speech that I can see here is that voiced by the legislator, with every claim that she makes as quoted in the article. Anyone speaking in opposition to the right of the freedom of the speech is advocating hate speech of that freedom. No exceptions.
The actual name is gender dysphoria disorder and is in the realm of mental illness and with psychological counseling and psychiatric care virtually always is resolved by the end of puberty and young adulthood. It is not the same as homosexuality. The problem of late is that there are a lot of squishy adults out there that have no clue who they are and pass on their mental pathology to their offspring. It is not however an inherited trait.
It has become transformed into a social movement that is badly supported by minimal UNBIASED data. There is no proof that changing the gender improves or changes mental health or reduces suicide. The disorder is supported in so many cases by medical professionals and psychological advocates by the simple means of emphasizing the risk of suicide if the targeted individual does not change genders when there is no proof that suicide is reduced. Suicide in teens was already an issue before this movement appeared.
These children are impressionable and rash and the adults are supposed to guide and help them but instead they are pushed into medico-psychological complex making vast sums of money taking healthy bodies, filling them with puberty blockers and then surgery that will make them a medical cripple for life.
You want to get rid of this. Remove the secondary gain. Don’t pay the doctors and psychologists (stating this is unproven treatment or experimental), make everyone go to the appropriate sex bathroom, simply do not allow boys and men on hormones and blockers to compete in womens sports. Remove the incentives.
We, as a society, were aghast when we learned that certain terrorist organizations sought out troubled and depressed youth and convinced them that the way to salvation was to become a suicide bomber. If not enough children were around they used animals or the mentally impaired.
Who are we then to criticize those societies when we are doing virtually the same thing but we’re a little more slick and subtle and we can make a lot of money at the same time.

I have had occasion to deal with a number of medical professionals on the subject of “gender affirming care.” I have been amazed at how many have bought into the trans movement, dismissing any discussion of gender dysphobia as nothing more than proof that the person is “anti-Trans.” The give-a-way I’ve noticed is the use of “preferred pronouns” in their signature blocks. I also have seen this in the signature blocks of some lawyers and judges who are located in woke places like Austin.

What you believe and what reality shows are two different things. They are educating others about their views. That’s no different than people from different cultures educating and expressing their views. Children learn about different cultures and their views. The point is that yes, I agree with you that the homosexual / gender dysphoria should represent a small percentage of our population.
Yet w overpopulation … this percentage seems to increase. Still a huge minority.
That said, they are members of a protected class. White CISgendered males are not.

Maslow is not absolute, to a small extent when people are having trouble meeting more fundimental needs they still manage to acheive higher order ones.
But that is limited.
I would further note that Maslow did not note that economics factors into the hierarchy.
It is not just that needs are ranked hierarchically.
But that we must product MORE than enough to afford more fundamental needs before we can contemplate higher order ones.

The left is correct – SOME quasi socialist countries do provide a better cradle to grave safetynet than the US.
Many things are “rights” that are not here.
But there are several things true of those few countries that SUCCESSFULLY do that.
There standard of living is lower than the US – even AFTER everything is factored in.
They actually have substantially greater economic freedom than the US – you can not have a strong safetynet, if the market is not productive enough to support it.
They have substantially higher taxes than the US – on EVERYONE, and EVERYONE pays far higher taxes – not just the rich.
They are mono-cultures – because you can not get these systems to work in diverse countries.
Nearly the whole country must share the same race the same church, the same ethnicity, the same tribe and the same core values.
They are far better than the US at dealing with Moral Hazard. In most instances that cradle to grave benefits system has LOTS of constraints.
Either mandatory copays, or long wait times, or limits on services. They have SOMETHING to prevent the over consumption of social safetynet services.
There are actually only a few countries in the world that meet this criteria. And those have lower stnadard of living than the US.
But they are not collapsing.
The preponderance of these “european social democracies” that have purported broad social safteynets – either do not actually if you look at their real systems.
Or there standard of living is significantly lower still.
The left in the US has done many stupid things over the past 60 years – trying to make this country into European countries that have either abandoned these systems, or severely constrained them, or ended up with low growth and lower standard of living.
While these left wing nut policies have been bad – the US has survied BECAUSE we have a higher standard of living.
Though I would note – in the US and elsewhere in the world groweth in standard of living directly correlates to govenrment spending.
The more spending – the less growth.
The 19th century average growth was about 7%/yr. The 20th was 3.5%, the 21st century is below 2%.
The negative effects of greater government spending are always larger than the benefits.
So growth slows.
White cisgenders males don’t have less rights. They just don’t have the privilege of being the only ones with rights.

Having blue eyes is an objective Fact.
There is no objective means to determine sexual orientation.

Further it is highly unlikely that these are not Bell curve traits – which would also explain their rarity.
Each of us is a mix of masculine and feminine traits – regardless of our sex.
But it is near certain that these traits distribute on a bell curve.
That means as an example that only atiny portion of males will be “alpha” males – with virtually no feminine traits,
and only a tiny portion of males will be thoroghly dominated by feminine traits.
It also means that the Most “alpha” Females will at best be similar to a median mail.
And the most feminine males will at best be similar to a median female
An example of a related trait would be violence.
Men and Women are both violent, both criminal.
The difference between male and female criminality may be quite small – maybe 10%.
But criminal females are much more rare than criminal females.
Which is both reality and something you can work out mathematically.
