“I Was Screaming Before You Interrupted Me”: Rep. Bowman Raves in Capitol on Gun Control

I have often discussed in columns what I call our “age of rage.” There may be no more defining moment of that age than what unfolded today in the Capitol as Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., screamed about gun control. Various Democratic members, including former House Majority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md, tried to calm Bowman. However, after Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky, asked him to stop yelling, Bowman shouted “I was screaming before you interrupted me,” which could now go down as the epitaph for our age.

As members filed out of the House floor, Bowman was yelling about Republicans killing children and not caring about the carnage in our schools: “What are they doing about it? Nothing. They don’t have the courage. They’re cowards,” Bowman can be heard shouting as the video begins. “Three 9-year-olds. Are they going to those funerals? No!”

Massie stopped to address the attacks and noted “You know there’s never been a shooting at a school that allows teachers to carry?”

Bowman responded “More guns? More guns leads to more death” and continued to scream: “Republicans won’t do S— when it comes to gun violence.” He then continued on Twitter.

Massie responded:

“He wanted to discuss solutions to school shootings, but when I offered a solution he began shouting. When he asked for data, I gave him data, but then he just shouted more. Bring facts. There’s never been a school shooting in the hundreds of schools that allow staff to carry.”

The point is not the merits. This is an important national debate and the underlying facts continue to be debated, including statements from President Joe Biden that some of us have challenged.

However, this scene captured how rage has replaced reason in our public discourse.

  1. B lack people: STOP YELLING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It literally HURTS PEOPLE’S EARS!!! Nob ody is going to want to talk to you when you are HURTING OUR EARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. If that was me and Jammal Brown was screaming in my face and putting his hands on me, I wouldn’t have been as polite as the Tom Massie. It would have been a street brawl. I am glad I am not a congressman or sentaor- I would never last. Lol.

  3. Time and time again, Americans demonstrate a striking inability to responsibly own guns. And while it may be technically correct that ”guns don’t kill people, people kill people”, it also clear that Americans need their guns taken away. No other civilized nation has this problem. It is time to wake up and repeal the second amendment because Americans are not capable of responsible ownership.

    1. Which Americans?

Are you assuming that all Americans are street thugs or gangbangers?

Why is it your buysiness if I have a gun?

Have you ever learned the fine art of minding your own business?

      1. It’s my business any time your gun enters space that it could be shot, and reasonably be expected that I was within its range, bozo. Work it out logically, and I’ll wait for the smoke to clear from your head.

        1. Actually, unless I actually fire the gun, or threaten to fire the gun, it is not your business.

    2. There are four or five hundred million weapons in private hands, along with probably trillions of rounds of ammunition. Gun owners are not the problem.

      1. Not all of them, no. Just the ones with lousy impulse control, like the ones that rioted January 6th, in the capitol.

        1. Astonishing that you used that as your first example.

Normal people would use gangbangers doing drive-by shootings as their first example.

Gangbangers had actually killed people by doing drive-by shootings.

  4. If guns are the problem, wouldn’t there be thousands of mass murders every day? Or even millions of mass murders every day? After all, there are millions of privately owned guns in the US.

    1. More children die from gunfire than any illness in the United States. Other countries don’t have this problem.

  5. If you believe a plastic sign, that says, “Gun Free Zone,” with a cross out pic of a handgun is going to stop someone from shooting out glass doors, entering a school to kill children and adults, you might have a mental illness.

  6. People who fear an inanimate object, with no will, no conscious of its own, have a mental illness.

A Winchester Model 1873, was found propped up against a juniper tree in Great Basin national park, NV.
Archaeologists say it could of been there for over a century.
At no time did the rifle commit a crime.
At no time did the rifle commit a mass murder.
It sat there, against the juniper tree and did nothing.
The rifle would require someone, with ill intent, to pick it up and use it in a crime or mass murder.
Just like the millions of guns in law abiding gun owners homes do not commit crimes or mass murder.
Nor do those law abiding gun owners commit crimes or mass murder.

It is people with ill intent, criminals, those with mental illness that do commit crime or mass murder.

Again, people who fear an inanimate object, with no will, no conscious of its own, have a mental illness.

    1. So would a knife, so would dynamite. You aren’t allowed to carry a knife over a certain size in most U.S. states, and dynamite is licensed.

  7. “More guns? More guns leads to more death”

A wicked person uses a tool to murder people. The Left’s “solution” is to criminalize the tool.

There’s no attempt to understand the *cause* of the wicked person’s actions. No insight into the killer’s ideas, history, psychology, motivations. The Left just stares blindly at the tool, stomping their feet: “Bad tool. You are a very bad tool.”

    That is mind-numbingly anti-intellectual.

    1. Leftists, themselves, are much akin to guns: They go off at the slightest pull of their trigger!
