We have been discussing the rising intolerance on our campuses and the repeated cancelling of events by shouting down or obstructing speakers. The latest such example comes from Virginia Commonwealth University where pro-choice students obstructed a pro-life event.
Students for Life at VCU invited Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins to speak at their event. The event called “Lies Pro-Choicers Believe” resulted in pandemonium and reportedly arrests for assault and disorderly conduct. The video shows the usual elements of students on the left calling opposing speakers “fascists” and “deplatforming” by shouting them down by yelling “fascists go home,” “Nazis go home” and “f**k pro-lifers.”
The pro-life group posted videotapes and claimed that Antifa protesters were part of the violent protest.
I testified in the Senate on Antifa and the growing anti-free speech movement in the United States. I specifically disagreed with the statement of House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler that Antifa (and its involvement in violent protests) is a “myth.”
It is at its base a movement at war with free speech, defining the right itself as a tool of oppression. It is laid out in Rutgers Professor Mark Bray’s “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook” in which he emphasizes the struggle of the movement against free speech: “At the heart of the anti-fascist outlook is a rejection of the classical liberal phrase that says, ‘I disapprove of what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.’”
Bray quotes one Antifa member as summing up their approach to free speech as a “nonargument . . . you have the right to speak but you also have the right to be shut up.”
Michael Porter, a spokesperson for VCU, said the university was “disappointed” and added that “VCU is committed to promoting a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors so that the right to gather and speak freely is protected.” The question, however, is whether the university will hold any of these students accountable. Many are shown on videotape disrupting the event.
Many on the left insist that silencing others is an act of free speech.
When Professor Josh Blackman was stopped from speaking about “the importance of free speech” at CUNY law school, CUNY Law Dean Mary Lu Bilek insisted that disrupting the speech on free speech was free speech. (Bilek later cancelled herself after using a controversial term in a meeting and resigned). At the University of California, Santa Barbara, professors actually rallied around a professor who physically assaulted pro-life advocates and tore down their display.
There is obviously a difference between protesting outside of an event (which is clearly protected) and disrupting an event by shouting down speakers. Most schools expressly bar such disruptions, but few hold students accountable when they prevent others from speaking. A recent example can be found at Stanford Law School where the Law Dean denounced the cancelling of a federal appellate judge, but then said that no students would be sanctioned for their actions.
Until there are real consequences from universities, the anti-free speech movement on our campuses will continue unabated.

Yesterday a Manhattan grand jury recommended a wealthy Florida man should be indicted for white collar crimes. Now ordinarily an indictment of a white collar criminal in NY would not get much attention. But this time the man being indicted is Donald Trump. Trump’s attorneys were surprised because they thought any indictment would not come for at least another 2 weeks. Trump was quick to respond, even misspelling a word, on Truth Social. In a hasty message he claimed “Thugs and Radical Left Monsters” had just “INDICATED” him.
Now some on this blog think I am giddy that Trump may be finally held accountable for his many crimes. That’s a misreading. The case in NY is a pissant prosecution–unless Alvin Bragg can turn a misdemeanor into a felony. And that’s a big “if”. No, the biggest threat to Trump is Fani Willis’ voter fraud case down in Fulton County, Georgia and Jack Smith’s investigation of obstruction over the Mar-a-Lago docs. The latter is probably months away from a decision to prosecute Trump.
On the downside of prosecuting in NY is that it is unifying the GOP behind Trump–claiming it is a “political prosecution”. And Trump will play the “victim” card–using it to scam his supporters out of more money. Trump has already raised $2 million in donations for his defense fund and is now asking his supporters to send in another $24 to “defend our movement from the never-ending witch hunts”.
Judging from the about a dozen Trump supporters surrounding Mar-a-Lago yesterday, waving their MAGA banners and flags, it doesn’t appear there is going to be a massive uprising to protect Trump. The MAGA crowd leaned their lesson from Jan. 6. Almost a thousand have been convicted and some are doing serious time. Another thousand are facing trials.
So what happens in NY will stay in NY. Bragg is the first out of the blocks but he will soon be followed by Willis and Jack Smith–and they will overtake Bragg for attention because the possible charges in those cases are much more serious. In any case, it’s going to be a “wild” time–to use Trump’s description of Jan. 6. For those on this blog who thought Trump would not be prosecuted or their world will end if Trump was think again. The justice system is actually working as intended–no one is above the law–not even a wealthy guy from Florida. Some of you out there owe me a beer!

My purpose in attending such extracircular presentations was to supplement what I was able to learn from classes in which I majored. It never once occurred to me to attend any sort of political event organized by a bunch of impressionable morons (aka students) with ZERO real-world experience. It might be different if the US was still at war and drafting college-aged people to go to war without their consent, as was the case when I first began attending university in 1971. But that’s not the case now, and I really don’t see the point of holding POLITICAL events ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES when permits can be obtained to hold meetings in some public square where the general public is available to attend and supplement the experience level and average IQ of the crowd.
Summary: College politics is BS, except MAYBE for political science majors (which some might say is itself a BS major.
Allowing only non-political events on campus is impossible. First, almost everything, no matter how technical, is politically relevant. For example, let’s say a civil engineer wants to make a presentation in which she proposes that bridges on public highways be constructed to withstand earthquakes of a higher magnitude. A mechanical engineer may want to make a presentation on whether EVs are better for the environment than vehicles that run on fossil fuels. Maybe an architect wants to make a presentation proposing that all buildings be required to meet minimum energy efficiency standards. Or maybe a medical researcher wants to host a conference addressing the merits of a new vaccine. Second, who gets to decide which presentation are political and, thus, banned from campus?
Private universities are private property and only the owner may “claim and exercise” dominion. Public universities are likely very much unconstitutional and unconstitutionally funded, and must adhere to the Constitution allowing assembly, free speech, etc. Universities must be run legally and in a way that maintains financial viability. Teachers and professors unions are criminal enterprises and must not be on any campuses. Owners and appointed officials alone have the power to hire, fire, matriculate, expel, direct and pay employees and/or students. The sole deployable tool of unions is the commission of crimes, including violence.
America’s fertility rate is in a “death spiral.” More Americans die than are born. College educated folks can do the math to find that America is dead in a century or so. “She,” you say? America will be a dead, extinct nation with one “she” civil engineer who failed to do her natural, God-assigned duty to make her nation’s citizens. And who says college folks can’t think? The American population is undergoing foreign replacement or haven’t you noticed?
In a free America with free enterprise and free markets, you communists (liberals, progressives, socialists, democrats, RINOs, AINOs) don’t dictate product purchases, market demand establishes production rates and qualities. Courts exist to right wrongs, correct defects and provide appropriate compensation – problem is the corrupt courts. What are the pollution characteristics of the full EV production process, from lithium mines to complete battery replacement? Government cannot tax to fund EV infrastructure – Article 1, Section 8.

You could say that everything has a political element, however the university’s School of Architecture and Environmental Design that I attended hosted the events at which the architects I mentioned offered their presentations, and the speakers took questions following their slide-show presentations.
I suppose someone could have gotten purely political in their questioning, or interrupted the proceedings such that presentations didn’t occur, but that didn’t happen, possibly because those in attendance were more concerned with architectual styles, problems, and critiques than they were interested in politics. Perhaps one would have to be, or have been, a student of architecture or engineering to understand how unlikely a disruption of the presentations would be.
I also think that the events weren’t attended by political activists because the subject matter was too dry for their tastes, IF they were even aware of the events at all. I suspect that events attended by political activists are organized by related scholastic departments — political science mostly, but also other interrelated areas of general studies which tend to attract political activists. At any rate, if there were political activists in attendance at the architectural presentations I mentioned, they didn’t advertise or demonstrate their presence.
At any rate, I didn’t say that political activities should be banned from campuses — just that they should be encouraged to happen off-campus whenever possbile. Merging campus politics with real-world politics has always seemed like a dumb idea to me — defective in concept — due to the disconnect between college students and people living and working in the REAL world that exists outside of the artificial campus cauldron.
I don’t feel like I’m explaining well what I mean to express, so for that I appologize.
Political activism is often a refuge for those without inner resources or more wholesome areas of interest. In or out of colleges/universities.
LOL — I used to joke (although maybe it wasn’t entirely a joke) that journalism school was for those who’ve already flunked out of every other major — including English. But perhaps that judgment should have been properly reserved for political science majors.
I’d say any of the social sciences counts first, but, since the new crop of “journalists,” and, one assumes, majors in that subject, believe journalism’s chief function is or ought to be “social justice,” whatever that sloppy term means at the moment, they might just edge out actual social sciences as the least beneficial course of study to the nation.

I have been reading lately about how European, particularly German, socialists and communists fled Europe after the failed 1848 uprisings for the United States, where they then attempted to continue their revolution using abolition as their vehicle. I’m old enough to remember when the left, who was not in cultural power at the time, fought tooth and nail for free speech. The French comedic absurdity of the fascists calling those that don’t kowtow to the approved think fascists is absurd. The dangerous part is, these groups do much more than peacefully protest, they routinely use violence against individuals and groups (as can be seen in videos of this attack) and this violence is state sanctioned because very few of them face consequences for their violent actions = they are the paramilitary arm (every marxists movement has one) of the state. This assault on American sensibilities and life and limb will continue until Americans en masse put an end to it. The government has proven it no longer cares about its primary role, which is to protect all its citizens and their God given rights.
The irony of using fascist tactics as they scream ‘fascists go home’ and do their best to cancel them seems to be lost on these people. It’d be laughable, but I live through the 1960s and watched the leftists progress from yelling at people to bombings.

“Until there are real consequences from universities, the anti-free speech movement on our campuses will continue unabated.” That says it all. The people in charge agree with the ant-free speech sentiment, hence they do nothing. Plus, even if they wanted to do something, they fear the radicals will destroy the buildings and whatever else they wish to.

Federal funds should be withheld from any institution where violations of the Constitution are committed. It shouldn’t be limited to universities.
Congress may not tax for or fund anything but debt, defense and general welfare.
General means all or the whole, not a few or some. The only things that provide for ALL to WELL PROCEED are items such as roads, water, post office, sewer, electricity, internet, rubbish collection, police, fire, etc. Social Security and Medicare absolutely do not serve all or the whole but people over 65.
