Oklahoma Woman Mauled To Death By Pack Of Dachshunds

Oklahoma flagTragic mauling deaths are unfortunately not uncommon.  However, Tracy Garcia, 52, was initially listed as the victim of a pack of pit bulls in Ardmore, Oklahoma. It turned out that it was actually a pack of dachshunds, or wiener dogs.  Police are now considering charges against their owner.

Florida Woman’s Smiling Mugshot Triggers Public Outcry After Lethal DUI Accident

1526581064132We often discuss the choice of whether to smile in a mugshot (at the risk of appearing gleeful) or frowning (at the risk of looking guilty). Angenette Welk, 44, chose poorly.  Her smiling mugshot has prompted an outrage from people over the fact that, before she took the picture, she killed a 60-year-old mother in a drunk driving accident.

“Amen Sister”: Gillibrand Declares “The Lehman Sisters” Might Have Prevented 2008 Financial Collapse

440px-Kirsten_Gillibrand,_official_portrait,_112th_CongressNew York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand told a supportive audience at the progressive Center for American Progress Ideas Festival that gender alone could make a difference in finance crises: “If it wasn’t Lehman Brothers but Lehman Sisters, we might not have had the financial collapse.”  The problem, critics have noted, is that Lehman Brothers had a female CFO during the financial crisis.  The bigger problem is how gender is often presented as a de facto credential by politicians and activists without acknowledging that it would also be de facto discrimination if used in this fashion.  It is an interesting story coming on the heels of the story out of the University of Akron where a professor declared female students would be automatically given higher scores. Gillibrand’s comment comes when she is pushing for new sexual harassment legislation in Congress.

Akron Professor Prevented From Increasing Grades Of Female Students Based Solely On Their Gender

300px-University_of_Akron_seal.svgStudents in the information sciences class of University of Akron Professor Liping Liu were taken aback by an email that shared some information on how Liu intended to engage in open sexual discrimination in his final grades.  Liu announced that he intended to increase the grades of female students to encourage their continuation in the male-dominated field of information sciences.  Liu has been prevented from carrying out his flagrantly discriminatory plan but there is no indication that he will face discipline for such abuse of his academic position. Michigan State Agrees To $500 Million Settlement For Sexual Abuse Victims

360px-Michigan_State_University_seal.svgIn what might be a record amount for a university, Michigan State has agreed to pay $500 million to victims of Larry Nassar.  That staggering figure would crush most schools, but Michigan State has decided to take the hit to get the controversy behind it. The school is in a similar position to Penn State in terms of paying out massive fees and damages while trying to keep its alumni support base.  It has worked for Penn State which (like Michigan State) has a fiercely loyal base built around its football program. However, half a billion dollars could chill some donors who want their money to go to the school and not litigation.

English Man Arrested With Cheerleader Outfit After Driving 130 Miles To Have Sex With 10-Year-Old Girl

downloadMichael Bickerton, 49, insisted that his interest in sexual relations with children was purely fantasy.  That did not sit well with English police who arrested Bickerton after he drove 130 miles to meet at 10-year-old for sex.  It also did not help that he brought a cheerleading outfit with him in the car.

As The Supreme Court Considers Major Free Speech Case, Liberals Can’t Have Their Cake And Eat It Too

Freedom_of_SpeechBelow is my column in The Hill newspaper on how liberals in New York are supplying the Supreme Court ample reason to rule for a Colorado cake shop owner in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case.  As the Court decides whether a baker can refuse to bake a cake deemed offensive, many liberals are asserting the right to refuse to serve conservatives based on their political views or associations.

Cumberland (Wis.) police posted an interesting message for the Cumberland High School students responsible for this year’s prank.  Using a black tarp, the students made it look like a car had crashed into Cumberland High School.

The police posted the image above with the message “Hats off to the Cumberland High School Class of 2018 on your senior prank. Congratulations Class of 2018 on one of best senior pranks that Cumberland High School has seen.”

That is high praise from your local police station.

Pre-Trial Poll: Should Men Still Pay For Dinner On the First Date?

11353720745_316418dba3_bToday we discussed the curious case of the so-called “Dine-and-Dash Dater.” Paul Gonzales is accused of running out on several women at restaurants after expensive meal.  As we discussed, much of the alleged crime would depend on the expectations or understanding of the daters.  Below is a poll designed to gauge how jurors might view such a case.

“Reach Out To Touch Someone”: Michael Cohen and Washington’s Only Indigenous Crop

300px-AT&T_logo_2016.svgBelow is my column in USA Today on recent disclosure of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, received hundreds of thousands of dollars from companies like AT&T seeking access to Trump.  Accounts indicate that Cohen actively sold himself as a conduit to Trump to companies seeking influence.  Cohen is only the latest in a long line of sleaze winding its way through Washington.

Caught red-handed in influence peddling, AT&T reportedly fired the Vice President responsible for the Cohen contract and called it a “big mistake.”

Court Rejects Claims Of California Middle School Teacher Of A Conspiracy Between Police and White Nationalists After Berkeley Riots

anti fa memberWe have previously discussed Antifa and its violent anti-free speech philosophy. The latest violent clashes occurred at Berkeley where  middle school teacher and Antifa leader Yvonne Felarca, 47, was arrested for battery and resisting arrest for fighting in Berkeley’s much maligned “empathy tent.”  Felarca has fought the charges and called the charges a “witch hunt” to convince the court to drop the charges against her. It did not work with a California judge who refused to discuss her felony charges.  What was surprising was the language used by her lawyer in both courts filings and public statements.

“Dine-and-Dash Dater”: California Man Facing Charges After Running Out On Expensive Meals With First Dates

paulkgThere is a novel criminal charge in Los Angeles where Paul Gonzales has been accused of being the so-called “Dine-and-Dash Dater.”  He allegedly would take women to expensive restaurants and then bolt after the meal —  leaving several women with restaurant bills.  He arranged the dinners through dating apps.  He is already facing allegations of petty theft.

Local media has been broadcasting his image above to warn women about Gonzales and his alleged eat-and-bolt technique. Continue reading ““Dine-and-Dash Dater”: California Man Facing Charges After Running Out On Expensive Meals With First Dates”

SUNY Student Reprimanded Under “Unwritten Policy” For Criticizing Liberal Intolerance At Open Mic Event

SUNY_logoWe have been discussing the rapid erosion of free speech on our campuses and the increasing confrontations with students who bar speech with which they disagree.  (Here and here and here and here)  The most disturbing aspect of this trend has been the active support of academics and administrators, including defining the prevention of free speech as an exercise of free speech. The result is that schools are caving into academic demands made by students.  The latest example is the action taken by the State University of New York at Oswego administrator, who  reprimanded a student for making other students feel “uncomfortable” by raising liberal intolerance of free speech at an “Open Mic” event last month.  Nicole Miller was called out under an “unofficial policy” — thereby confirming the very point of her remarks.
