The tort system may achieve what the state legislatures could not with the hate-based Westboro Baptist Church. The father of a fallen soldier won almost $11 million verdict Wednesday against the fundamentalist Kansas church, which taunts grieving families at funerals and celebrates the death of their kin.
Albert Snyder sued the church after they tormented him and his family at the funeral for his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq.
The jury first awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages, d $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress.
