Bathroom Break: Religious Groups Launch Ad Campaign Against Transgender Potty Rule

In Gainesville, Florida, conservatives have begun a campaign reminiscent of the Proposition 8 campaign in California to overturn a ruling in favor of same-sex marriages. This city-wide campaign, however, is about 100 resident transgender citizens and where they can go potty. The city council passed a law allowing the residents to use either the men’s or women’s room and the opponents have unleashed an ad (below) that shows a cute little girl being following into the bathroom by a lurking male.

Opponents of the law are pushing for a repeal on the March 24 ballot. The law itself passed by a slim 4-3 margin.

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force insists that 108 cities and counties nationwide have similar transgender protections and attempts to repeal one law in Montgomery County, Maryland. This repeal effort in Florida, however, have gathered 6,000 signature.

Computer programmer Clare Holman, who was born became a female as an adult, insists “I don’t want to run afoul of the law by using the wrong restroom.” Running afoul of a bathroom rule has been a problem in other university towns. Gender neutral bathrooms caused chaos at Manchester University last year. The issue of transgender use of bathrooms has also led to litigation.
