ICE, ICE, Maybe: Democratic Members To Vote Against Their Own Bill To Abolish ICE

We previously discussed the irresponsible proposal to abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) by a rising number of Democratic members and leaders. It is the Democratic version of the equally irresponsible proposal from Republicans to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  This type of pandering, demagogic call however was answered this week when the Republicans called the bluff of three members and actually put their bill to abolish ICE on schedule for a vote.  Reps. Mark Pocan of Wisconsin, Parmila Jayapal of Washington, and Adriano Espaillat promptly declared the vote a stunt and said that they would vote against their own bill.

In a joint statement, the three members declared “We know Speaker Ryan is not serious about passing our ‘Establishing a Humane Immigration Enforcement System Act‘; so Members of Congress, advocacy groups, and impacted communities will not engage in this political stunt.'” The vote on their bill was stunt but not the abolishment of ICE itself?

Democrats previously suggesting that the time had come to abolish ICE include Sen. Elizabeth Warren; Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand; Rep. Mark Pocan, Rep. Pramila Jayapal; Rep. Earl Blumenauer; Rep. Jim McGovern; Rep. Raul Grijalva; and Rep. Mike Capuano well as well as Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio; and New York Democratic candidate for Governor Cynthia Nixon.

Vanilla Ice may decide to update his hit:

Ice ice maybe
Ice ice maybe
All right stop
Collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new majority
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Then I flow that agency daily and nightly
Will it ever stop?
Yo, I don’t know
