Biblical Trip: Expert Suggests Moses Was Probably High on Mount Sinai

Professor Benny Shanon of Jerusalem’s Hebrew University has presented a startling theory: Moses was probably high when he saw the burning bush and received the word of God on Mount Sinai. He has identified a psychoactive molecule on Mount Sinai that is found in plants that produce similar hallucinogenic responses.

Shanon believes that Moses, and others, used plants to achieve these narcotic moments and that this molecule is much like the Amazonian hallucinogenic ayahuasca. He should know. He says that he has tried it and has had similar reactions: “In advanced forms of ayahuasca inebriation, the seeing of light is accompanied by profound religious and spiritual feelings . . . On such occasions, one often feels that in seeing the light, one is encountering the ground of all Being … many identify this power as God.”

Researchers are now working on whether the lyrics “You gotta fight for your right to party” from the Beastie Boy was actually the missing Eleventh Commandment.
