Oklahoma House representative Sally Kern has achieved a modicum of fame or infamy with a video racing on the Internet. Kern gave a speech to about 50 Republicans that has taken back the nation in the unrestrained hatred and intolerance directed at gays, accusing them of “destroying this nation.” It is a glimpse into what homophobia becomes when ignorance in a legislator is combined with intolerance in politics.
Kern has defended her rant, proudly saying “What I’m saying, I believe in.” That is sad because what she is saying is raw hateful prejudice.
Not only does she say such things as gays being worse than “islam” (as if all Islam is now per se evil), she offers a rather bizarre history lesson, informing the audience that “no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades.”
It is a video worth watching to understand what perverted notions of history and morality often accompany homophobia. The question remains whether anyone in the Oklahoma legislature will condemn this person, a question that has been raised recently in other Oklahoma controversies, click here
