Video: Oklahoma Legislator Rants About Gays as Threat to the Nation

Oklahoma House representative Sally Kern has achieved a modicum of fame or infamy with a video racing on the Internet. Kern gave a speech to about 50 Republicans that has taken back the nation in the unrestrained hatred and intolerance directed at gays, accusing them of “destroying this nation.” It is a glimpse into what homophobia becomes when ignorance in a legislator is combined with intolerance in politics.

Kern has defended her rant, proudly saying “What I’m saying, I believe in.” That is sad because what she is saying is raw hateful prejudice.

Not only does she say such things as gays being worse than “islam” (as if all Islam is now per se evil), she offers a rather bizarre history lesson, informing the audience that “no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades.”

It is a video worth watching to understand what perverted notions of history and morality often accompany homophobia. The question remains whether anyone in the Oklahoma legislature will condemn this person, a question that has been raised recently in other Oklahoma controversies, click here

    Another ON LINE PETITION!

What a JOKE! How many times am I going to be solicited to buy something, sign up for something, send money, or get on future lists at the web site you listed!

    ON LINE PETITIONS! LOL!

  2. An older heart/brain quote was from a Congolese rebel about 40 years ago. It went: “if you aren’t a Marxist when you are a young man, you have no heart, if you are still a Marxist when you are old, you have no brain” or something very like that.

Its probably much older than that.

As to the relationship of liberalism/conservatism to human age or development. It is clear there is a definite correlation with educational level with the break favoring liberal values increasing with education level. Ever wonder why universities are so liberal? Where did it start? Answer: it has been that way for centuries.

As far as the Supreme Court goes: age on the bench has usually manifested itself in increasingly liberal decisions. There are exceptions of course, but many justices become more liberal and it is not as it is popularly written because of the “hydraulic pressure” of the east coast media and academe. We as humans, tend to become more humane: less rule-driven and more caring and communitarian, and this tends to break toward liberalism. Of course, counter examples exist: Justice Hugo Black being the most famous. It may be that there is a statistical turn toward conservatism that starts very late in life, in the late seventies and eighties.

I am surprised that you heard the J.S. Mill quote that way, maybe it’s the company you keep!

What we really have here is a clear example of what happens when you don’t ban braying jackasses from election to the Oklahoma Legislature.

I completely agree, Mespo, but regrettably, I couldn’t vote to keep THIS braying jackass from election to the Oklahoma Legislature, as much as I would have loved to. I think it’s illegal to vote in OK, when one isn’t a resident of that state. 🙂

  5. Certainily she should give her opinion and certainly others may respond to it.

  6. mesp: wow, what a coincidence.

I heard that same thing years back but always thought it was “Although it is not true that all liberals are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are liberals.”

Of course you have heard the old one “if you aren’t a liberal in college you don’t have a heart and if you aren’t a conservative when you are an adult you don’t have a brain.”

  7. Sally Kern (R-Ok) proves how prescient John Stuart Mill was when he famously said: “Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.” I am sure our resident “bs’er” would agree with that truism.

  8. Most in America have no problem with the woman freely giving her opinion. The only people that do are the lunatic left wingers. You know, the “Keith Olbermann is God” type.

  9. I tell ye all, John McCain’s favorite pastor will have god tear down this website, just as he punished the sins of New Orleans with Katrina.

This ignorance comes from the same kind of minds who find women unworthy of driving. Another “talk like a pirate day”–ARRGG maties!

And “regulating” (I assume you mean by restricting or even banning some forms of it) free speech would eliminate the problem of rabid homophobia and other forms of extreme intolerance in our lawmakers and legislators in government….how, exactly?

  12. What we have here is a clear example of what happens when you don’t regulate free speech.
