Agent Denies Abusive Tactics in Feiger Case

The FBI agent in charge of the campaign-finance probe of Southfield lawyer Geoffrey Fieger denied that he was abusive to possible witnesses as they have claimed. Jeffrey Rees said that he was merely trying to get them to tell the truth. There has been no action taken against Rees, even though some of these accusers appear quite credible and his alleged misconduct has undermined the federal case.

Rees insisted that “[t]here was no undue pressure” but one cooperating witness was so upset by his conduct that he refused to testify with Rees in the room. He further said that be “doesn’t believe” taht he told anyone that they committed a felony. He did admit to making mistakes on reports in the investigation.

I tend to believe these witnesses in such a case. This also conduct that I have seen repeatedly by agents. The question is the source. This is a senior agent. For such conduct to be common, there is obviously a tolerance or even an encouragement within the agency. There is certainly a lack of deterrence due the failure of the Justice Department to police itself.
