India on the Verge of Repealing 150 Year Ban on Homosexuality

India is on the verge of a major victory for civil liberties: repealing a ban on homosexuality that was first introduced by the British 150 years ago.


While Winston Churchill once said “Don’t talk to me about naval tradition. It’s nothing but rum, sodomy, and the lash,” the Crown imposed a ban on only one of those traditions in India. The country only recently held its first national Gay Pride march.

The repeal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code — making sex “against nature” punishable by up to ten years in prison — is a relic of an earlier time. However, it is important to note that our Supreme Court only recently overturned its decision supporting the state criminalization of homosexual relations.

Unfortunately, gays in Moscow are facing their own obstacles — even to march as a group, here.
