Beck started by saying “Our sponsor this half hour is the Vermont Teddy Bear Company. Vermont Teddy Bear is getting ready for Mother’s Day weekend….” He then takes an unexpected turn:
“Mother’s Day, it’s a scam. It’s a big business scam…. Started 1914. Woodrow Wilson. Hate that guy. Love my mom. Hate the holiday…. But there’s something new from Vermont Teddy Bear. Three handmade teddy bears in pink, green and white. The bears are scented, each one with a different scent: strawberry, watermelon and cupcake. It’s like a bouquet of flowers, only it’s a bear bouquet for life. Call 1-800-829-BEAR or go to VermontTeddyBear.com, VermontTeddyBear.com. Something new for mom this year to let her that you love her and you’re thinking about her. The bear bouquet. From Vermont Teddy Bear. Delivery before Mother’s Day is guaranteed.”
Who hates Woodrow Wilson? I understand isolationists not liking the League of Nations and tea party members may not like the Federal Trade Commission or his creation of the federal progressive income tax . . . but you hate him? He was a well-meaning geek with a genius IQ. What’s to hate?
And then there is the Mother’s Day thing. It is actually traced back to ancient Greece, and the festival in honor of Cybele.
In the United State, it was Julia Ward Howe who was the champion for a holiday. Now, no one is suggesting it is the equal of the big holidays like Thanksgiving or Father’s Day, but still “you hate Mother’s Day?” Beck’s Mommy (Day) issues are crying out for an intervention.
