Former Bar Treasurer and Prominent Lawyer Aaron Biber Sentenced to 18 Years For Sexual Assault of Teenage Boy

Prominent Twin Cities lawyer and former State Bar Treasurer Aaron Biber was sentenced this week to 18 years in prison for sexually assaulting a teenage boy. The court reached the sentence by taking an upward departure to increase the jail time. Minnesota law required only 12 years.

The case attracted national attention not only due to the prominence of the defendant but his effort to introduce a picture of the victim dressed as Adolph Hitler and giving a Nazi salute. His attorney claimed that the teenager controlled relationship and the picture was relevant because Biber is Jewish and the boy liked to dress as a man who killed Jews. Presumably the picture was offered to show the degree of alleged dominance of the victim over Biber.

Biber was convicted of getting the 15-year-old boy drunk and sexually assaulting him when the boy stayed overnight at his house. Prosecutors argued that Biber groomed the boy since he was 11 as a sexual partner.

Biber, 47, admitted the rape.

Psychologist James Alsdurf told the court that Biber “wanted to possess this boy” and would need three to four years of treatment.
