Saudi Officials Extend Jail Time For Women Caught Driving

7ff8a8a007968d30670f6a7067004c8aWe have been following the international outrage over the arrest of Loujain al-Hathloul, 25, for driving as a woman. She was arrested with a female journalist. Not only is the Saudi government not backing down, it has extended their jail time by 25 more days to allow for further investigation.

Saudi Arabia continues to enforce an absurd rule against women driving despite the fact that even its most extreme Islamic neighbors in the region like Iran do not follow such a rule. The Saudi clerics believe that driving encourages licentiousness in women. One cleric also told Saudi women that driving harms their ovaries. Another “scientific” Saudi report said that there would be no more virgins in the country within ten years of women driving.

Under the Saudi legal system, the family has not even been told what is the basis for the women being held or the charges for which they are being investigated. It is hard to see why it would require another month to investigate a crime that the women filmed and posted on the Internet.

Despite flogging women who tried to drive, brave Saudi women continue to defy the government in regularly posted video (here and here and here and here).
