Erdoğan was leading a rally in support of the Turkish operations in Syria when he noticed a 6-year-old girl cadet in the crowd in uniform. He had the obviously scared girl brought to the stage and then used her as a bizarre prop. He proclaimed:
“You see we have maroon berets, too. But a maroon beret does not cry. A special command, a colonel, a maroon beret… Wonderful! Her Turkish flag is in her pocket. If she becomes a martyr, [her coffin] will be covered with a flag, God willing. She is ready for everything, is not she?”
In most countries, a leader celebrating the notion of a dead little girl draped in a flag would be the end of his public service. However, Erdoğan has arrested or removed most of the independent journalists in Turkey. He is now free to engage in this type of creepy exercise.
