Los Angeles Debates a 40-Hour Moratorium on Killings

The Los Angeles City Council appears to be dropping the proposed 40-hour moratorium on killings that was supposed to start on Friday. The tabling of this proposal by advocates like Councilman Tony Cardenas should clear the way for other possible alternatives like requiring Los Angeles residents with even numbered license plates to kill only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays while people with odd numbered license plates could do their killing on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. All would be expected to rest on Sunday.

Believe it or not, there was a debate on this proposal in the city council. Councilman Cardenas was quite upset by the ridicule over the idea saying, “That’s the kind of attitude that Martin Luther King had to step over and step across to get the job done.”

Other members supported him, but they passed only a resolution that calling for dialogue on the “the root causes of violence and killing.”

Hmmmm, that should move the Crips and Bloods into a tough spot. There are, of course, current bans in place in the form of homicide statutes.

Nevertheless, it is good to see the L.A. City Council pursuing serious efforts to combat violence.
