Smith’s confession was made on November 28th. She was charged with the murders, but died on January 19th. Police remains bothered, however, by the role of a police officer in getting rid of the murder weapon.
Smith said that she gave the weapon to a detective on the police force in 1967, David Bocock, and that he buried it. It appears that he did not bury it, but kept it. Kathy Myers has come forward to say that that Bocock gave the gun to her deceased husband, a former Staunton police officer, in 1981, telling him, “Don’t let anybody know I gave this to you.” She has turned over the gun to the police.
