Czech Republic Denounced Over Castration Practices

The international community and the Council of Europe’s Anti-Torture Committee have denounced the widespread use of castration by the Czech Republic for sex offenders. The Council has called for an end to what it refers to as invasive, irreversible and mutilating” punishment.

The Czech Republic has castrated at least 94 prisoners in the last ten years. This includes first-time, non-violent offenders, such as exhibitionists. The government insists that such procedures are voluntary but critics insist that the defendants are given the stark choice of lengthy sentences or castration.
