California Man Drives Over Bank and Then Steals Ambulance Sent to Rescue Him

After Derick Gates, 20, drove his 2003 Honda Accord over a bank and collided with trees, he was understandably delighted to see an ambulance and emergency workers arrive. Unlike most drivers in distress, however, Gates saw the rescue as something of an opportunity: he stole the ambulance.

Gates refused treatment and then allegedly jumped in the ambulance and sped off with the California Highway patrol in pursuit. Even after CHP succeeded in deflating the right tires of the ambulance with a spike strip, Gates allegedly kept driving until it broke down.

At the hospital, he again refused treatment and allegedly fought with officers.

He is facing charges of evading a police officer, stealing an emergency vehicle and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
