Malaysian Catholic Paper Wins Right to Use Word “Allah”

The Herald Newspaper of Malaysia has reportedly prevailed in its long battle with the government to be able to use the word “Allah” in its Catholic publication. However, the government insists that it must state clearly on the front cover “For Christians.”

Malaysia’s government had previously ruled that Allah should be used only by Muslims, but the newspaper argued that the work has been used by Malaysian Christians for centuries in their translation of the Bible, and in popular prayers like the “Hail Mary.” There are 850,000 Catholics in the country.

The newspaper intends to continue the litigation on the issue despite the concession from the government.
