Sex Offender Sleepover: Counselor Arrested After Allegedly Taking Teenage Sex Offender Home to Have Sex

When a 17-year-old sex offender escaped from a juvenile treatment program in Baltimore County, many wondered where the counselors were at the time of the escape. Well, police say that one counselor never let him leave her sight. Tyra M. Greenfield, 26, was arrested after allegedly allowing the boy to stay at her house and having sex with the sex offender. Not quite the approach recommended by the manual on sex offender counseling. The charges, however, are interesting.

Greenfield is now charged with sexual child abuse and harboring a fugitive. What is fascinating about the case is that, while the age of consent in Maryland is 16, it is a crime for an adult to have sex with a minor who is in the adult’s custody or care. Because she was a counselor, she will face a sex offender charge where any other person would only face a harboring charge.

Greenfield works for a private contractor as part of the New Directions program. The program took 10-12 youths to a movie and the youth ran off while they were in the parking lot. Greenfield was allegedly waiting for him in a car nearby. While she later drove him to a relative’s home, he made a call using her cellphone — which ultimately led the police to her doorstep.
