Korea Facing Rise in Black Market Abortions

South Korea is experiencing rash of illegal abortions in the wake of crackdown under law criminalizing abortions. In one case featured below, a woman took a second job to afford an abortion, a procedure that has skyrocketed in price as women turn to the black market.

South Korea outlawed abortion in 1953 with exceptions for rape, incest or severe genetic disorders. However, the government recently announced that it would begin to enforce the law with a hot line for citizens to turn in their neighbors.

Korea is experiencing a drop in birth rates, which is viewed as the catalyst for the crackdown.
