Lettuce All Get Along: Belfast City Council Settles Lawsuit on Failed Tomato Jump By The Lord Mayor

The Belfast City Council has agreed to pay a settlement of £24,021.75 to a worker injured in a rather unique tort. Lorraine Mallon suffered a slipped disc when the Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers tied to jump over her while she was dressed as a giant tomato. Pictures of the failed leap can be seen in the article below.

Mallon was dressed as the fruit as part of a gourmet garden event in Botanic Gardens in September 2007. Rodgers’ knee accidentally hit Mallon’s head, causing the injury.

Mr Justice Stephens at the High Court in Belfast approved the settlement and she will also receive costs from her lawsuit alleging negligence and breach of statutory duty.

Rodgers insists that he really could make the jump, noting “I’m very fit and look after myself, but it was just one of those unfortunate things.”

I suppose that is better than relying on the old joke:
