Weakland resigned in 2002 after it was revealed that the church paid Paul Marcoux, a former Marquette University theology student,$450,000 to settle a sexual assault involving the archbishop. Weakland insisted that there was no assault.
Weakland was also criticized for his admitted decision to return abusive priests back to their parishes.
Weakland, a Benedictine monk, served in Rome as leader of the International Benedictine Confederation. He was a hero of the Catholic left and worked on a liturgy commission for the Second Vatican Council.
It appears that Catholic priests are moving heavily into the sexual lifestyle aisle of bookstores. Father Ksawery Knotz has published a book entitled “Sex As You Don’t Know It: For Married Couples Who Love God.” The book, published with the support of the Polish church, promised instruction on sex that is “saucy, surprising and fantasy packed.” Father Knotz notes that “Some people [think married sex] has to be sad like a traditional church hymn.” Hopefully, this is purely theoretical work by the author as opposed to Archbishop Weakland’s work in the area.
